How to Downgrade Tears of the Kingdom to 1.0.0
Now you can finally escape the confines of 1.2.0.

Tears of the Kingdom 1.2.0 can feel a bit limiting and maybe you’re yearning for the days of old - where you had the YB Glider dupe and the MsgNotFound Master Sword. You CAN return to 1.0.0… but it requires you to be on a physical version, and delete all your data. Redownload all your games you may have downloaded, and you cannot get your old Tears of the Kingdom save back, so you’ll have to start anew. You’ll also lose every save for games that do not support cloud saves, such as Splatoon and the Pokemon series. If you’re still resolved to go back, go into your system settings and scroll all the way down until you hit format options. From there, you’ll want to go to Restore Factory Settings. Once you’ve done this, the switch will be as if you’ve never held it before. Now what you’ll want to do is make sure you don’t go online when you add your profile. You can link your Nintendo Account later - for now, go into the game as it is on 1.0. Now you’re free to do what you want on this older version!

You can go back to 1.0.0! If you know someone who's still on any other desired version number, you can also version match back up to that version later if you want, as long as its done locally. @@traplunge Your accounts will be deleted off the switch, but can be added back afterwards. Just make sure that when you add them back, make sure automatic software backup on cloud saves is disabled so you don't automatically get yourself stuck on 1.2.0 again. This is also why, unless you have Nintendo Switch Online cloud saves, you will lose all your saves. There is no way around that, unfortunately.

I'm livid cuz i haven't updated since the patch.. but I was just out of town for two days and I guess my power went out or something cuz my switch was totally dead when I got home. I guess It must have reset or something because I made sure to disconnect all my internet before I turned it back on. However, once I did it had already updated and I am so so mad lol

I scoured eBay for a first gen console and checked against the serial number to confirm that it was indeed completely unpatched so I could have my way with it. Indeed, the battery leaves a lot to be desired.

If anyone is still trying to do this, don’t download any cloud data save for ToTK that you already have as you will not be able to play the game without updating as that data was done on a newer version and you can’t delete it after that so you’ll end up doing the whole process again

@@tyopsie this is not intended to be a tutorial, just a demonstration of how easy it is with the right tools: firstly, make sure you have a switch from before july 2018. there are methods for more recent ones but you need to be on specific updates i think. also, you can buy a proper jig instead of the paperclip and it’s likely a lot safer, but for the paperclip i cut off one of the loops, made about a 45° bend in both of the arms. then bent the loop in the opposite direction to make a handle - there are a decent amount of pictures on google for how it should look. the most important thing is that it should sit right up against the edges of the joycon rail so it touches pins 1 and 10. that way pressing power and volume + will get you into recovery mode and you can inject whatever payload you want. then i used tinfoil to delete the update file from totk, threw a backup i found of the 1.1.1 update onto my sd card, and installed that. it honestly took me longer to get the paperclip just right than it did to delete and install the updates there’s a proper guide for this on gamebanana with a much better explanation. best part is, since you aren’t messing with any saves, or touching really anything on the system aside from deleting, it leaves no trace so you don’t have to worry about being banned. if you have any concerns just go on airplane mode for the entire process, then go back online after you’ve restarted back into stock firmware

if you have a year one switch and are willing to do a no no to it then you can go in and delete the update file as well as the flag saying that an update is required. shouldn’t be possible to get banned for this as it’s not piracy or cheating, but if you’re worried just stay on airplane mode for the whole process. after you’re done you can remove all the no no if you want and you’ll be back on 1.0.0 with no trace of any funny business. if you prefer 1.1.1 because 1.0.0 has its own problems you’ll have to hunt down the update data online and install that

It's important to note you CAN'T update your system after doing this and going online, either, due to Nintendo releasing a system patch that bricks older versions of games to force players to update.

I have 1.1.2 and haven't really bothered to dipe much after playing with it a bit. Alsp do note that 1.0 version isn't quite stable. It has a more unsteady framerate and was improved in the patch after. May be noticeable to some. I believe that patch was a day 1 patch for launch so only early players pr9bably experienced it or those who didn't update right away on physical.

You can work around losing all data. You just need to use a separate profile that has a Nintendo account. As long as you’re fine with losing that one, just delete your main profile and then factory reset. Then when you reenable your main profile on that switch with the game, it shouldn’t need you to install the update

this does not work because the game says you have to update the game before you can play with no bypass. then you are right back to 1.2.1 and you lost everything. so how do you get this to work?

Don't connect online until you make a new save after wiping. Short explanation - the factory reset also wipes the system that tells the switch an update should exist.

I actually got lucky that my wife had a Switch she doesn't use anymore so I reset the machine and deleted the wifi password so it can't connect to the net and now it's my Zelda Switch. I use it only for Zelda games. 1.0.0 forever!

This is like fixing a broken shingle by setting fire to the house! Luckily I've got a modded system and choose which updates I want. I never upgraded to 1.1.2, but in many respects 1.0.0 is worse! They fixed some severe performance issues with the patch. It was actually available for download days before the launch!

You don't need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription active to relink your Nintendo account again. However, since you will not be able to use cloud saves, any eligible save that you can keep with cloud save backup would also be gone. If you haven't already used the free trial, I recommend using that if you have any saves or uncertainties! Just remember that no matter what, you cannot downgrade *and* keep your save without modding your switch.

Once you've made a save and turned off auto-updates, you're okay to start restoring your switch back to normal, user account and everything. Just make sure not to download a ToTK cloud save if you had one.

If you have a modded switch or know someone who does, you may be able to get the saved data "downgraded" on their console. Otherwise, Nintendo has carefully prohibited you from doing this :(

So glad i went in offline mode, turned OFF automatic updates and never updated my game. Ahahahahha. I will keep 1.0 forever and always be duping baby. But great video for others. Thanks.

Or if you also have the game in physical format, go to settings and delete Zelda ToTK And put the cartridge back and make a new Nintendo account, in that play ToTK in 1.0.0

So, I’ve got an odd situation. I have both the physical and digital versions of the game. I’ve been playing with the cartridge in the system even though the digital version has been downloaded to the console. Every time I launched the game, I was provided the option to update or start software. Of course I just chose start software. I wanted to make some room for other games. I figured the physical version will always allow me to run the OG version. Not so. I deleted the digital version of the game and left the cartridge in the console. Ever since then, any time I try to start the game on my OLED Switch, I get a message that I must upgrade. Oddly enough, I also have a Switch Lite on the same Nintendo account. The save data is synced between the two. I had both the digital and physical versions on the Switch Lite instead. I can still play the OG version on my Switch Lite. Very strange stuff!

I did the factory reseting but I clicked the “Restore Factory Settings Without Deleting Save Data”. And I turned off Auto-Update Software and turned on Airplane Mode. But, it gave me some stupid message that doesn’t have the start software button. How do I fix this please without losing data and without hacking?

Can’t you just erase remove the card and delete the game data from storage settings? Sure, you’ll probably lose your save (I haven’t tried it but I doubt it will let you play with new data on an old version), but surely the console won’t keep update data if you erase the game…

You'd be surprised! The Switch holds a database of every software's "newest version" in its ticket system. The ticket system only gets wiped when the console is formatted/initialized, so the only way to completely get rid of the update in full is to go through that. They really wanted to lock it down as much as possible.
