Your home is beautiful! As someone who lives in New Zealand, I'm always amazed at the size of American homes. We live in just over 1000sqft with 3 kids and this is a very normal sized home in NZ. Walk-in wardrobes and large pantries aren't something you see unless in a new build or in a more expensive home.

I live in california, my wife and I would love a 1000 or 1200 sq foot house. All we need is a kitchen, TV and comfortable sofa and a bed LOL. There are ways to find smaller homes, you just have to hunt certain areas. Currently I use the Zillow app and use the filters.

My home was 1400 sq ft for a family of 5. We added on and now our home is about 2400 sq ft. I absolutely love it! Every room in my house is used and like your family, we declutter often and find we don't need to store things we aren't using!

I loved the look of our old house but it was way too big to keep up well, and it felt wasteful to have unused rooms. We are much happier here, although we definitely felt blessed to like in the other house as well. It’s really nice when your family comes along with you with the decluttering effort too.

It’s hard to get started decluttering but easy to continue because it feels so freeing! It helps a lot when you just can’t store the stuff due to space too. I really think that was the final push we needed.

Love this “couple chat”. Downsizing/ decluttering does feel sooo good..and then having that yard sale or donation pile makes our heart happy. So glad the house is a “home”..y’all have done a great job and having the girls input is key🥰

I cannot wait to be able to move to a smaller home! I feel like all I do is clean. With multi- levels, there’s always something to clean; I can’t ever just enjoy the house. It’s exactly what you said- when everything is all there and open, you just keep it cleaned up. What I’m dreaming of right now in our three levels. 😄 I love your home.

I love both your houses! But the new one is my favorite bc of the simplicity. We moved just over a year ago to a house just under 2000 sq ft from a house nearly 2x our current one. We also realized we weren’t utilizing a lot of the space and wanted a single story. I can’t believe how much we decluttered and even now we are still decluttering so many things! It feels good to let stuff go and not have to manage it anymore.

We up sized from an older, smaller house (approx 2000sqft) to a 4000sqft home - pool with large deck, 3 car garage, extra family room, 5 bedrooms, 5 baths, formal dining room and a casual dining area off the kitchen complete with breakfast bar seating, huge screened porch - when our kids were entering middle school and HS. Now our youngest has just entered his senior year of college. We are looking to downsize in the near future, most likely to an easy maintenance one level and under 2000sqft. We have been decluttering this past year. Unlike you, we had every room, every closet filled with stuff. We have made significant progress but there is still a lot to do. I am so glad we started the decluttering process when we did because this would have been overwhelming to try to do in a shorter time frame.

I liked your old house a lot but this new house feels a lot more homey. 💗 "Multi-purpose" is something that I think is foreign to many Americans. I love how you used this idea with your rooms. I grew up in Asia and I've been here almost a decade but I still get shocked (and amused) at some things that people buy/do. So unnecessarily wasteful! 😄

We lived in 1300 square feet house with our 3 girls when they were little and it was small but so doable. It definitely didn’t allow for storing clutter which is great because I get overwhelmed by too much clutter. I’m a wanna be minimalist but because I love my husband (who is an engineer and tidy but raised by a mom who kept everything) we are minimalish.😋😍 Love your new space! We now live in 3000 square feet for the past 20 years but we have six kids and three are married so we use the space. But we don’t fill all the cabinets and closets.

I think we are more minimalish as well. We definitely don’t count plates and things like that but we do only keep what we use. I love how we really can make a smaller or larger space work as long as it is intentionally thought through and planned well!

Our house has 4 bedrooms, and the one downstairs is the office. We have one bedroom upstairs that is my daughter’s homeschool room, as well as a guest room-I put a daybed in it, and it is a perfect solution! We have just over 2900 square feet.

I understand why you downsized. 4000 sqft is a massive house. 2400 sqft is consider a big house here in Sweden. Our apartment is 484 We are two adults living here full time and my partner has two kids. We need to upsize to 800 sqft in the future. I like to keep it small. Small living spaces means less to clean and you can't horder things. Your home looks beautiful.

Both of your houses have been and are beautiful! I am glad your space now is working well for you. I think with homeschooling it's important to have a space to store your materials (every day and long term) and your spaces in this house are just perfect! I love that cat walk area in your home. You have used that space so well by putting your homeschool shelves up there. And then your space in the living room doesn't scream "school room" but yet you have everything you need tucked away on that shelf by the table!

Now that you live near your parents be careful about them offloading their stuff onto you. A throw rug here, a box of books there, old family pictures, etc and the next thing you know your house is cluttered and all of your storage is filled up. If they give you stuff, take everything but the cherished family mementos directly to the donation center.

I’m upsizing for storage as there’s an issue wiv storage where I live. I declutter often. We’re not hoarders. Sophie might want a bigger room as they grows. I’ve been told my future home has cheaper power as the home is more engery efficient.

Lovely video! We are considering down sizing about 1000 square feet to a one story. Some of our furniture is very large and I feel like we will have to get rid of several items. Did you downsize your furniture as well? Thanks!!

We did sort of. Not every room. We moved in the summer of 2020 during the pandemic and we moved ourselves for the most part with uhaul trucks.We knew some of our furniture would have to be sold before the move because it was too much, too large, or for rooms we wouldn’t have anymore. But we were also lucky because the owners of the new house offered to leave behind several really nice pieces. So for instance in our family room, we only had to bring our coffee table and rug, snd we sold the rest. In a small house, less is better because the house feels more open.

I don’t think most families l(husband/Wife/2 kids) actually need anything more than 2500 square feet. However, 3000sf offers larger rooms and closets. When you start getting into the larger homes, you start adding extra bedrooms, offices, media rooms, gyms, man caves etc. some people would use all of that, some won’t.
