Sharing the essential downwind skills that help me catch more waves and have faster runs. We did a big group downwinder in epic conditions and I was reminded of what a difference these skills make. Love to hear how these work for you and any future videos you would like to see. Hope this helps. Thanks!

Great video my man, was just starting to downwind when I found this a couple years back, helped me get up and running. Came back to check it out again as a fairly confident paddler now and was able to just appreciate the stoke. It's infectious. Happy paddling.

Awesome video does the bottom of the board need to be slick smooth or can it have lines and grooves I'm looking at a board called.... easy Eddy paddle board I'm wondering if I could learn how to ride waves with that......

First off, I really enjoy all of your SUP videos. I've learned a lot from them. So I have a few gear questions regarding downwind. Is your paddle different than your surfing one? I'm about your height and weight. What is the volume of your 14 foot board? Thanks! Keep up the great work...
@clayisland
@clayisland 5 лет назад
Hi, I prefer a longer paddle, narrower blade and flexy shaft, catching DW bumps often requires a ton of effort and I find the paddle is easier on my body. Volume IDK, it's a Blueplanet 14x30.

So footwork seems a integral part of downwinding success. Is it possible on a dugout board to DW, in more of a hybrid stance, or do both feet need to be aligned further back on the board. Cheers Davey.

Hi Clay, do you have any guidance on a down winding board? Or do you just use the biggest longest .. boat you can / really doesn't matter? I'm also around Alameda and use L41s in surf.. and you've inspired me to try this DW. sorry if this is a dumb question! :)
@clayisland
@clayisland 6 лет назад
Scott Regan Hi Scott, good to hear from you. I recommend trying as many boards as you can, 14'x28" works for most guys. You are welcome to try my boards.

still tricky for me, i have SIC Bullet 27.5 -28 wide 12.6 feet, what is a really good 14 feet downwinder may be iam ready for 26.5 wide ? what do you recommend Sam
@clayisland
@clayisland 6 лет назад
asaied100 Hi, Big question, for me the answer was to try lots of boards. I found the 12' boards to be to low volume and I felt bogged down. Narrower seems to work for shorter folks. I find stability is the best answer for catching more bumps and longer glides, so for me a wider board works better. On a 30" wide board all my energy can be put to paddling and moving my feet instead of struggling to stay balanced. Also I had a custom 12' board made that is really thick - full volume from rail to rail and nose to tail, huge difference from the production 12 foot boards, great for small days and catching tiny little bumps.

Hello Clay my name is Leonard I was in Sausalito yesterday and walked to Baker Beach at the coast guard assembly area at base of bridge, I talked to 2 gentleman who FOIL WAKEBOARD across the bay to Berkley on a 3,500$ foilboard, was that YOU. ?

Might be stupid question but after you've gone all this distance downwind how do you get back lol ?? that's a longgg paddle upwind back then?
@clayisland
@clayisland 6 лет назад
Good question. Paddling upwind all those miles would be grueling or even impossible for most people. So most DW runs we use a shuttle, multiple vehicles/bike, or boat ride.

Typically a downwinder is done with more than one person and two cars. They "car shuffle" so there is a car at the start of the run and a car at the end. Or you can do my trick, take your phone, some light replacement clothes, a towel and some bike locks along for the ride, lock your board up at the end, then uber back to your car and drive to your board to collect it

are bumps are very short so we paddle the uphill part
@clayisland
@clayisland 6 лет назад
Will is Smart I hear you. I occasionally do a lake DW run with micro close together bumps. These don't really have an uphill so I just keep on paddling.

i got myself a newF - ONE 8.10 x 29 SUP to a little bit challenge myself, i was progressing fast on the big one's so got a smaller 1 (im 80kg 172cm) but now im always falling. Some times i have a bit of luck and i hold on to the board but mostly im just falling, i know it's a slow process but, i do wanna know what im doing wrong . So if you could help me out @clayisland that would be great.
@clayisland
@clayisland 3 года назад
Sounds frustrating. 8'10" for downwinders? If so that's really small. For me going wider is the easiest way to gain stability, and vice versa to narrow a board at any length gives me trouble.
