Draw the Dalmatian Pelican! Children across Bulgaria, where the Dalmatian Pelican lives - will be drawing it too. Everyone who sends in a picture can see them displayed online as part of the withNature2020 project on 22 May - the international day for biodiversity, when we’re going to create a tapestry of species across the world.
In Burgas, Bulgaria, on the Black Sea coast, there’s a huge bird with a very striking beak (!) that is emblematic of the place. It’s often to be seen over the buildings of the town in wintertime, and every morning at 8am, heavy flocks of the birds rise up from the local lake and move en masse to their feeding sites on another nearby lake. The people in Burgas feel strongly about this bird - the Dalmatian Pelican - because there are not many places in the world where this species still lives: and one of those is Bulgaria. That makes the bird particularly vulnerable so today we’re going to draw the Dalmatian Pelican, and try to help the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation keep the species from going extinct.
We're going to draw the Dalmatian Pelican as part of a special art project that is trying to remind the world of the value of all the plants and animals that make up the biodiversity of this planet, and why we should try and protect this species.
