A great way to improve your skills quickly is by studying your favorite artists. The typical way to do that is by creating mastercopies, essentially recreating an artist’s work to learn their techniques. There a couple big traps a lot of people fall into when doing this, so here's how you can avoid those and learn fast!

If you subscribe, I add a dot to a wooden canvas that represents you! The more dots added, the more the stipple drawing will be revealed!

I don't think I ever really made master studies other than a few that were just copies, but what I found helpful is checking how artists implemented elements into their works that are similar to things I am making at the moment. Obviously not just referencing other people's art as if they were reference photos, just looking at how a material is rendered by certain people for example. I recently worked on an owl painting and kept checking how people made the feathers of the spread wings look natural and I do think I really made that piece better through this step.

I don't know if you have heard of Carles Dalmau, but I am in love with his composition and story telling with his drawings. I have always wanted to do this from the start. I find myself trying to dissect his composition, colors and values. Which is what he uses to make his piece super interesting, like the focus points are super obvious. I have been trying to incorporate that into my pieces, even though our styles are super different.
