Thanks a lot for a great demo with so many useful information on drawing & watering the paper. I wish, I would have found your channel earlier. Now I'm going to watch all your RU-vid demos and buy eBooks. Please post more of that 😊

Fabulous. I'm a total beginner - one point that you didn't emphasise is how you left tiny white areas along the top edges of the boats. When a child learns to paint, it's usually about *filling in* , whereas, with "grown-up" water colour, it's about *not* filling-in but leaving some!

I really appreciated you showing us a method of how to draw the boat first. I got a lot of extra tips when watching you paint and really appreciated this video. Making it really dark at the base of boat in the shadow really made me see how it brought the boat to appear so real! I'd love if you could do one now on yachts...

Glad I could help!One of the very first videos I posted about 10 years ago covers how I did this with a yacht. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AA6rGZIrbYw.html

Thank you very much for this very informative video Joe, wetting the back of the paper, never heard of that before so will have to try it. Have purchased some Arches 185gsm cold press sheets and they are amazing the paint actually flows where as with the non cotton type paper the paint seemed to stay in puddles - well not exactly but it didn't flow like it does with 100% cotton. Loving these lessons and am learning a lot, thank you again, cheers.

@@JoeCartwright Tried the wetting the back of the paper and "sticking" it to the backing board, worked a treat and finished the sunset I attempted to paint with loads of time, did use a small test bit of paper (7 X 4 inches) but could have done my normal size (A4) and still would have had plenty of time and no buckling and that is a new experience for me !!!, thanks again Joe for sharing your wealth on knowledge, fantastic. Ps Loving the Arches paper. Cheers

I find your videos very informative. Thank you. Regarding the waterproof board on which you place the paper, where can it be purchased? What is it made of?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright Год назад
Glad you found it useful. The board I used at the time was called Gator Foamcore board, however now I just use a piece of black acrylic with a a matt surface. You should be able to find something like it on ebay.

Thankyou for teaching perspective. I'm absolutely tickled to have practiced it. Also the shadow on the water. Every tutorial up to this one has been outstanding, I'm so excited to be learning and growing, after so many years thinking I could never really watercolor. Thanks to you I actually am! Your an excellent teacher🎉

Not really. Just use a piece of acrylic from your local hardware store. That is what I use now.

Thank you so much, Joe, for this excellent lesson. Even though I have learned (and relearned) perspective, it is so helpful to see it applied. Boats can be tricky to paint, so going back to the fundamentals is invaluable. You are a wonderful teacher.

Hello Joe. I'm really enjoying this series. I bought some cheap brushes, paint and paper before finding you on RU-vid and wish I had found you first. I should throw them away and go with your recommendations, but i'm just learning and I can see past the frustration of my cheap paint for now. The paintings you have presented so far lean pretty heavily towards blue and grey. We are in our fall season here and the landscapes outside lean towards brown. You have mentioned several times that combining red, blue and yellow produces something in the range from grey to black. How do you produce a brown color?
@JoeCartwright
@JoeCartwright 3 года назад
Hi, browns and greys are produced when you mix colors opposite one another on the color wheel. In Class 5 which covers one version of a color wheel, if instead of adding water to each color on the outside of a color wheel, you add the color opposite it on the wheel you will mix lots of browns and greys. I may have to do a video on that after all!
