For those of you who can't afford the physical book... here's a PDF I found online. www.dropbox.com/s/kwfcvrnmeud08ad/pdfcoffee.com_how-to-draw-animals-jack-hamm-pdf-free.pdf?dl=0 And here's the link for those that want to see more book recommendations www.ssavaart.com/book-recommendations
aww! that was literally my favorite book to draw from when i was young. i would trace the pictures til i felt confident enough to draw them on my own. it helped start my love for drawing animals and their skeletal forms. i stumbled upon a torn to shreds copy at the thrift store, loved it ever since :)
I remember this book. I'm older than you two. Good to know what I was learning from carried over and your helping new artists to find and enjoy art also.
I'm pretty bad at drawing animals at the moment but I'm trying to learn. For some reason, I just never get the shapes of their heads right. Also, I'd love to see you draw the national animal of Finland which is a brown bear.
It's not cheating, no. You'll never learn to draw from sight or draw from your imagination by doing that, but it's the easiest, quickest and most accurate way of working from a photo reference. I'd say the best way to improve drawing figures is to learn about anatomy and drawing basic shapes.
my advice is that tracing is NOT cheating. it can help you in lots of different ways than just improving drawing figures! nothing is cheating if you spent hard work on it.
I would say no, it’s not cheating, but always credit the photographer if possible when you’re tracing directly off of a picture if you plan on posting it publicly. Tracing is really really helpful, and it can help with making more organic shapes in your art and seeing all the textures and stuff. :)
Omg! I’m loving this series so much 💜 Thank you for sharing this great book with us. If you could, please do Tanzania 🇹🇿 and it’s national animal, the giraffe. I’d love to see your design.
Every time you show a book and talk about how it changed your art style. I can’t believe we had so many of the same influences in our drawing libraries! I love this book!
I received my copy of this book and it’s awesome! It’s not like the traditional “How to draw” books! This one actually tells you how the different animals move and why and also compares them to other animals so you have more of a chance of getting them right even without staring at a reference, not that there’s anything wrong with using a reference, it would just make it easier to draw a specific animal on the spot if you don’t have one. When I got my book, I actually cut the binding off and put the pages in sheet protectors and stuck them all in a 3-ring binder so I can use it as a quicker reference. Doing so, makes it easier to be able to lay completely flat and be able to add my own notes and sketches to it as well! Thanks for the recommendation as it’s exactly what I could use to start painting animals!
I think this is the first "how to draw animals" book I've seen that doesn't simplify the appearance/make it look childish or cartoonish. I need to find this book-
I'd love to see you do a video on top rated supplies from like Micheals, Target, Walmart, Amazon and compare them I think it'd be interesting to compare ur top pick to ur daily favorites u use
It's also really helpful to know that all land vertebrates are made of the same parts. A bird's wings, human arms, and a horse's forelegs are all modifications of the same structure, and you can find the same bones in each. They're just shaped differently.
I've never been so early before. Scott, thank you so much for inspiring artists, big and small. I hope you realize that you've helped so many artists bu doing what you like. I love your art and who you are. Thank you, Scott
These were my favorite books to check out at the library. I loved learning to draw from a book like this and at a young age, it taught me to see things as the shapes they are rather than all the complicated curves
This goes to show how helpful older books really are, thank you very much for the recommendation Scott. I was honestly planning on trying to improve my animal drawings after getting inspiration from yours.
@@ssavaart I've been a huge fan of your work from a long time, you have inspired me alot and i appreciate you so much! And those tiny flowers are are like cherry on a cake🍰♥️
I love when how to draw books go into more advanced stuff. Too often it ends up just step by steps with no basis for further learning (cough cough Hart books cough cough)
This book's actually really cool because even if there's those step-by-steps drawing like in those "anime drawing" books you can see today, it's actually broken down into shapes that you can usually just draw from different angles as well, and not just fitting random shapes into a drawing you drew and saying "ya that'll work for this tutorial"
Omg I used this book when I was younger too!! Sadly I lost it so I eventually forgot how to draw the animals, but it was really good!! It teaches you proportions, how they look when they move, just everything in general.
Oh my god I have that book! I got it at a massive library sale for probably about 15 cents and ended up packing it away in a drawer I'd forgotten about. I'm definitely gonna go pick it up and study it again!
I know you already did an eagle, but please check out the Philippine Eagle! Also, Tarsiers! They're not our national animal but they're so smol and oddly cute!
You have unlocked a memory of mine that I forgot I had - I totally had this book when I was little and would look through it sometimes! Oh man, I loved that book
Got the book from Christmas thanks to this video! I’m so happy I got it and one other how to draw animals book. They’re both so detailed and very helpful when studying anatomy!
This book brings me back to elementary school,I remember always having fun drawing from this types of book ,even had famous people in a different one if I remember correctly
I just Got this book! And i love it, I can’t wait to practice for years and Draw and maybe be as great as you one day, I’m so happy you showed this book , if you haven’t i would have been struggeling scrolling on RU-vid , Thanks!
Holy crap! I just had a flash back to elementary school when I first discovered this book. I kept checking it out to learn about drawing horses. It's fantastic!
