How to Draw Bowls - Drawing for Beginners 

I'm so looking forward to this new series for beginners. You explain things so clearly and I learn by watching you drawings.

This is great. I'm So glad you're doing this. Though I have been drawing for a couple of years or so. I am just self taught and from books and videos but I know there's things I've missed and don't know. And your teaching style is excellent. It's just right for my brain. Hey I'm a grandma. 😉 A couple of years back I was wanting to draw a cup. I knew I had to draw an ellipse but it wasn't something I had any practice with. I kept drawing them over and over and drew a couple of pages of them. And I have drawn more of them since then but for some reason it's not the easiest shape for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Good lesson. I remember an art teacher placing a solid matt black bowl on a solid matt black surface, and telling the class to draw it. The light was very dim, and came down straight from above. The bowl was almost invisible, and I wondered how long it took him to get that setup so perfect. The class sat in a circle around the bowl so everyone had the same perspective. Or very close to the same. One student was just under five foot, and another was six-nine. I'm not sure it mattered because I could see, I thought, about an inch into the bowl, but I couldn't tell the inside from the outside. The angle told me I should be seeing at least that much, but I simply couldn't tell. Oh, and he wanted realism, which to him meant our drawings had to be as close as possible to the color of the bowl. The matt black finish just seemed to soak up every bit of light that hit it, and there were no highlights, no shadows, just a bowl that was matt black, and sitting on a surface that was also matt black. It may sound easy, but none of use did a very good job, partly because none of us could get that matt black finish with a graphite pencil. Then he showed us his drawing, and it was excellent. It showed exactly what was there. But it also had faint areas of highlight that revealed form, and the "matt" black was more of a deep gray than anything matt. But it looked so much like the bowl that it was uncanny. Even though these highlights were almost invisible, they clearly weren't something any of us saw. Nor did we see the color of the bowl as it was in his drawing. But it still looked perfect. He said he didn't see the highlights either, and knew ho couldn't quite match that deep matt black color with a graphite pencil, but sometimes the only way to draw hyperrealism is to cheat, even if it's something so subtle you have to put it side by side with the real thing to know it's there. That was a lesson I've never forgotten. Your bowl drawing brought it all back.

thank you soooo much sir... this and it was a really good tutorial, this is Maadhav and in higher grades it becomes tougher and tougher to draw diagrams of chemistry and biology. I was very weak at drawing but because of your explanation I was able to draw a diagram of chemistry[ evaporating dish ] that's when I got confidence for drawing better stuff. thank you so much sir😀😘

Thank you for this. I struggle with drawing cups, bowls and the like because I really really struggle to portray onto my paper what I see with my eyes. It's so tricky for me to convey the shadows that are inside the bowl. Any tips? And my hands get shaky while drawing the circle top so it looks wonky. Thank you for all the advice, again.

Thanks for showing the ellipsis- perspective of bowls etc. mine don’t always look right I👍🏼

If you hold a round object i.e. Coin poker chip washer from a screw in nut set etc it you hold it between two fingers and slowly rotate it you will see every possible degree of ellipse there is. Therefore, an ellipse is just a circle viewed at an angle.

Please make videos on cloths , drawing cloths is very difficult for me. And thank u
