Some people find it hard to sketch in public, so why not get some practice in drawing people out of catalogues and magazines? The models are great - they don't move! do one everyday and you will soon feel that maybe you do it from real life in a cafe or on the street.
You can see the other drawings I did from this catalogue on my Patreon page here: / 7932308
Remember that you are not drawing a photograph. That's what cameras are for. You are drawing a sketch. Your drawing does not have to be a portrait nor does it even have to look the same or use the same colours. It's your sketch interpretation.
If you make a mistake, that's great - we learn from mistakes. see if you can finish the drawing then have another go and see if you can get it right, Don't abandon the drawing if you make a mistake - that can turn into a habit and you'll never finish anything. Often you can save a drawing or painting by just keeping on going!

Shoo Rayner is an award-winning illustrator and author of over 200 books for children.
The Shoo Rayner Drawing Channel won the 2011 RU-vid NextUp award and is dedicated to teaching, promoting and inspiring drawing for everyone from beginners to experts who like to see how other people do what they do.
Shoo believes that everyone can draw but they lose confidence at school when they think they have to make their drawings look perfect or in a recognised classic style.
Drawing is just making marks on paper and you are allowed to draw anyway you like
Drawing is all about getting ideas out of you head and on to paper, it's about understanding how the world is put together and it's about having fun, with no stress, just drawing for fun.
Make sure you are subscribed for new drawings every Monday and Friday in you inbox and learn to draw better and with confidence with Shoo. ➡️ bit.ly/Sub2Shoo

The real master skill you show off, Shoo, is how your quick sketch is impressionistic and imperfect and sketchy, but it is still pleasant to look at! It's so easy to get hung up on registering every detail with a perfect line, and still make something look ugly. Choosing the right lines and picking your details, that's the real trick!

I really dislike when some people (thankfully, not many) look at my work and immediately start praising photorealistic art. Don't get me wrong, most people are very complimentary and supportive about my drawings. But some people compliment my drawings and paintings, then move quickly to exalt the virtue of realistic artwork. I realize that photorealistic art or still life, etc takes a great deal of technical skill but it's not necessarily better than cartoons/illustrations. Also, people like that assume cartoonists CAN'T draw realistically. I can draw realistically just fine. I don't want to all the time! And for people thay can't draw photorealistically, that's fine too. It's still art! Cartoons and illustrations take technical skill, style, and imagination! Not just the ability to copy. I love this drawing, Shoo!

I feel the same way!I also feel that this type of thinking scares others to pursue drawing, because it leads this expectation that you need to draw in a certain way. When in reality you can draw in whatever way that you feel is right.

Yes, why do people do that? Instead of pointing out the good aspects of your drawing they point out what you need to work on. That shadow is too dark etc but that was the way it was in the drawing you copied from the book. I have Lee Hammond's How to draw real people - am learning to draw realistically and I soon found out that it's so difficult to copy someone's drawing and get it to look right. These are How To/teaching books that you are meant to copy by the way. I soon learnt that i needed to be able to adjust my drawing from theirs for it to look correct but hadn't the skill. One drawing of a nose takes ages. To draw a cartoon you do need to learn how body parts look and can only do this by practsing over and over but people won't allow you that! I am an adult btw who could draw but was discouraged at school by my art exam result when someone stole my work from my folder. 47 years on its like they tap into my teenage insecurity. If you are young or any age really...I say...Don't let them! The worst critics seem to be those who never pick up a pencil. Duh....go figure

Thank you for the advice! I got a new sketchbook a few days ago, but I just couldn't bring myself to draw. Feeling like I am going to ruin it (which is stupid btw). I got a real "Lightbulb moment" when I watched the first half of the video. My parents and I just had a super fun family moment, which I wanted to capture... but I worried: What if my drawings of them look totally different? etc. With the help of the video, I concluded that I draw in a cartoony style and just for fun anyway!

***** That does sound good! Hmm when I do it often enough, they drawings will eventually resemble them more. And I won't be too nervous about it! That reminds me - I love going through my old sketchbooks! Inside them I see all the mistakes I've made, but where I have improved too. Sometimes, I find surprisingly well drawn pages as well. :D

Whether you are an artist who enjoys drawing caricature style or realism you SHOULD NOT be using a magazine to get your subjects. They are photoshopped to the max and the light index is increased to remove all shadow. By using models with these modifications you don’t get the benefit of learning the fundamentals of drawing. Cartoons have shadows too, perspective and depth still matter. You can go online and there are thousands of free pictures that are specifically created for artists to help learn portrait art... stay away from magazines and catalogues. This guy has the right message, but use a source that helps you grow.

But thanks to you ☺...you really gave me a new perspective. Now I think I will enjoy sketching and painting even more without worrying about the perfection of it 😆

My light bulb went off it nearly blinded me. lol :-) Using catalogues or magazines is a good way to practice different poses as well as different clothes that people wear. I'm not very good at drawing people so this will be a good way to practice. :-)

lovely vid again! Do you happen to have a "how to" video on how to draw and paint backgrounds for illustrations with ink and watercolor? If not would you consider making one? I'm good at characters, but I am not so good at background composition, choosing a good color palette for it, perspective etc. Especially with inking and painting forests and trees lol
