How to draw landscapes with Graphite pencils, this demo shows how I draw trees, water, buildings, water, etc, I'm still having a few problems with editing these videos, there's a small synchronicity issue with the voice-over and the video, but its near enough, you should be able to get a good idea of what I'm doing.

I know you've heard this 1,000 times, That you talk a little bit to loud 😆. I'm absolutely joking. I've watched everyone of your videos numerous times and have learned so much from you. I've only been drawing for 9 months now and I just finished the drawing you did of the landscape with the cabin and trees and pond. Of course it didn't turn out anywhere near like yours but I try and that's what's important. I tell myself every day that it'll get better. I just want to thank you for sharing your videos and taking the time to explain everything in detail so well. Drawing has really helped me in so many ways to escape the World. I'm a Disabled Veteran with PTSD, ANXIETY, and ADHD and LMNOP 😂. I have a really hard time leaving my house and dealing with the Public. You and your videos have helped me more than you know. Sorry for writing so much. Keep up the great work!

Wow, I've just half done a graphite picture, making it up as I go along and I'm astounded. Was told I couldn't draw at school (many years ago) and so am amazed I've "drawn" something recognisable. It's such fun! Thank you so much

Hi Smoothie. I'm recently retired and have developed an interest in drawing and watercolor painting. When I saw your work, I knew I wanted to emulate your technique of drawing the detail before you paint. So I have put my paints aside until I can draw with competence and confidence. Thank you so much for the inspiration. Doug

Sorry if this sounds like a really stupid comment. However, I'm confused by the use of the 'blending stump'. I've often seen them in drawing tins but I've never understood how you use them. They totally befuddle me. In any case, like Dave Usher, I am in total awe of your abilities. Beautiful work. Love your channel and a Happy New Year to you, Smoothie
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 8 лет назад
+horrorfan24 Not a stupid question at all, a blending stump or paper blender (they have several names) paper stump etc, is used to smudge and smooth out graphite, it creates lovely soft effects in much the same way as smudging with your finger does but without the risk of leaving oily finger marks on your work, here's a link to a demo I done, it explains a bit more about them ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--AWtrmC0Gxw.html also if you watch the "how to draw reflections" and "how to draw a tree with graphite powder" demos, you will see them being put to use, thanks for the kind words, Happy new year to you too.

I have a question....at approximately 5:50, as you are shading that big bush, it almost looks like you pre-order the page because some specs of white are left that aren't left on other areas of the drawing, even the top of the same bush. Did you indent it or is that the paper? I wish more artists would explain their methods like you do. Your drawings are magnificent.
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 7 лет назад
Thanks for the question Jeff, I didn't indent the paper, neither is it the texture of the paper, its just the way I shade using the pencil purposely leaving the white areas.

Great video to watch. I have watched it 4 times now and I learn something new each time, thank you. It would be great to be able to print out your finished image to use as a reference image so that I can have a go myself but I can't find it anywhere that I can save it and print it, can you help with that?
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 8 лет назад
+Tony Green Hi Tony, I don't think it would be wise of me to offer prints of my finished drawings as I sell the original work, it would be a conflict of interest. I have thought about offering prints of the line drawing so learners can trace the line and fill in the rest on their own, you could always pause the video at the end, and use that as reference, thanks for taking the time to view and comment, much appreciated.

you mentioned the graphitint pencils. I've been considering saving my pennies for a set of those. Maybe you could do a review on them. Do you always use them with water. I've been looking at work done by other artists using graphitint and I haven't seen anything done completely dry with them that I have liked. It looks like people are having trouble getting detail with them. I'm assuming it might be because they are soft and maybe don't maintain a sharp point. Do they blend like graphite when used only dry?
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 8 лет назад
+Holly Briggs Hi Holly, I use the graphitint pencil both wet and dry and mainly for mixed media work with watercolours, I find the colour range is perfect for landscapes, I find them great for detail work, unfortunately they don't blend like graphite, they are more like regular coloured pencils, heres some links to my graphitint work, the first is a long one, if you skip to the last parts of the demo that's where I use the grapitint, the other links are just time-lapse of pictures I done with graphitint, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AmQ0O2UIO4M.html ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cOEyWZGucEg.html ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FcJ2sevYcm8.html ... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yz68r9-3_Dk.html... sorry if you have already seen them, I just thought they maybe helpful if you haven't yet watched them.

Wow! Smoothie, that was very good, and very informative. I have two questions regarding pencils. Where can I buy a rubber pencil? I use lead pencils, but the graphite pencil appears to be a lot softer. Where can I buy these pencils? I live abroad and it isn't easy to buy these items here, there is also the problem of languidge. Your advice would be greatly appreciated . Thank you ! Mike
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 8 лет назад
Hi Michael, I would start by looking at websites of the main pencil manufactures... Derwent, Faber castell, Koh-i- noor, Staedtler, etc, there will be links to retailers in your area, check out the retailers websites for pencil erasers, sets of graphite pencils, also Amazon and ebay is an excellent place to look, it sounds like you are using a soft pencil, its best to get a selection of pencils in the grades of 4H, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B, that should cover you for most drawings, they are the grades I most commonly use. hope that's helpful to you.

Great smoothie! That must be very exciting! I am a new artist working mostly in graphic and some colored pencil. I am taking a painting class but for some reason I can't get into it like I do drawing. There's something so immediate about it and I love working in detail. Your work has inspired me to try a pencil landscape. Congrats on your sale!
@smoothie77drawingpainting
@smoothie77drawingpainting 8 лет назад
+Lynn Ebanks Thanks Lynn, I know what you mean about drawing, graphite is my favourite medium to work with, there's something about working in only one colour (graphite) and having to work on the tonal values and not rely on colour to do the talking, and like you say its so immediate, and if like me you like detail graphite and pencils are the way to go, don't give up on the painting class, im sure you will learn some valuable information, and like me you my switch between mediums from time to time. It makes my day to hear I have inspired you, thanks for the lovely comment Lynn, I wish you all the best with your drawing.
