That's awesome to hear. It was a subscriber who suggested that I do a Master study on Witch Hat Atelier, and I'm so glad for it.

This is an amazing tutorial! I am a huge fan of Witch Hat Atelier, as it employs some very rich line work that’s uncommon in manga. If you want anymore excellent manga artists to study from, Kaoru Mori’s Otoyomegatari (A Bride’s Story) features highly detailed embroidery and excellent backgrounds. Her drawings of horses there are also topnotch. I have never seen anyone else be able to recreate her style.

Thank you, Witch Hat Atelier was a suggestion from subscribers. I'm familiar Kaoru Mori’s work and she's on my list for a future study :)

I really like how you break down your steps really succinctly, and go through your thought process! It's helpful for someone self taught like me. And I'm really happy you did a study of Witch Hat Atelier, because it's one of my all time favourite manga. Shirahama does have short videos of her drawing with various dip pens! I saw that she would use this pronged pen for drawing grass much faster. For solid areas she uses brushes dipped in ink.

oh perfect! Thank you for the info about her tools. I wasn't familiar with her work until someone suggested it. It was quite an enjoyable video to make, glad to hear that you found it valuable.

Do you have a link to her videos? I know there are some on RU-vid from various channels, but I haven't found one where she does grass yet

@@chatsmeow2997 It may be a short video on her Twitter (though you'll have to really dig because I saw it years ago). Shirahama sometimes posts short inking videos there

This is SUCH a great video on how to do a master study, I learned a lot! I love Shirahama and have recently been trying to level up my line art and this was awesome. Shirahama does in fact, use dip pens to ink her work! (There’s clips of her doing so on her twitter). Thank you for this great resource ✨

An interesting thing about Shirahama is that ahe doens't like to use the G-nib, so overwhelmingly popular among Japanese mangaka. I remember that comic author Ed Piskor said she commented that to him when he visited her studio during a trip. From the videos I've seen her upload on her twitter account, she seems to use a lot of maru nibs.
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration 11 месяцев назад
The Tachikawa Maru nibs are great and I can see from her artwork that she prefers the more delicate lines. I think the popularity of the G-nib comes from being able to take a beating - all those speed lines! Thanks for your comment, and see you in the next video 🙂

@@longstrideillustration Yes, I can't wait! And adressing your question in the video, in the pictures Kamome Shirahama posts of her artworks, there are dip-pens (usually with G-Pen nibs) next to her drawings, so it's safe to assume that that's what she uses considering that this is also the standard for many mangaka.

I absolutely love your videos, I haven’t found anybody else who does these kinds of master studies, especially not with pen & ink. And your art is gorgeous! You definitely inspired me to buy a dip pen and some ink, and work more on my art. 😊 However, and please don’t take this the wrong way, but since the raven video I’ve found it difficult to watch your content, because there are just so many cuts, and so much is happening on screen that I just don’t register what I’m seeing. And it’s tiring on the eyes. On your latest video I’ve counted 8 cuts in 10 seconds, and as a viewer, I think that’s way too much. :( I think less would definitely be more in this case. Maybe it’s just me who’s accustomed to slower paced edits, and I also know it’s a learning process. I hope I didn’t offend you with my feedback, that wasn’t my aim. 😊 But thank you for sharing your process, and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. :)
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration Год назад
That's great feedback, and I really appreciate it. I came from the REELS approach of editing, plus all of the "master creators" advised to keep scenes under 15 seconds even for RU-vid. And that's as exhausting to edit as it is to watch lol. I will for sure slow things down. Thanks for your help, and thanks for watching!
