A slate frame is a historic type of embroidery frame that has been around for centuries. This specific type of embroidery frame keeps the tension on the fabric even without warping the fabric, like a hoop frame would. A slate frame is typically made from wood. It has two horizontal bars and two vertical bars (also known as stretcher bars). The stretcher bars have holes with pegs or notches to hold the horizontal bars in position, to keep the fabric taut.

So question- it looks like the width of the fabric you can use is static but I could make the piece shorter if I wanted since there's so many peg holes? TF sells a 12 x 18 frame that I would like to use to make a 12 x 12 piece. Thanks!

Yes, you can make the piece shorter. At 3:58, you can see the horizontal bars have holes in them. You can slide the stretcher bars closer together and then put the pegs in where you want them to create a 12 x 12 piece.

Outstanding again! Followed prompts that led me to your updated video. The black bias tape made a world of difference and I was able to hear and see everything so clearly. Have always done embroidery in hand but a new and complicated project requires a slate frame. Hoping I can follow your lead. Question: do you then hold the slate frame in a clamp on a stand or do you lean it on a table or what??

I have watched a friend use a frame that attaches to a stand, which is quite useful (and historically accurate). Personally, I just use the frame and prop it up with my knees, as it's less to carry and pack when traveling. Hello, I want to do a crewel embroidery project. if the size of my fabric is 8 by 10 inches, what is the size of my slate frame? Should I purchase a slightly bigger frame or exactly the same size of my fabric? Thank you.

Depending on what your final project will be, I would recommend a frame that is larger than your fabric to allow for seam allowance and such. The pegs on the sides allow you to adjust the dimensions of your project.

My frame did not come with pegs or the tape attached to the top and bottom, where can I buy the tape and pegs? And is there a tutorial on how to attach the tape to the bottom & top?

My tape is just stapled to my frame. Does your frame have holes on it for pegs? Strips of a strong fabric (like cotton twill tape) work well.

The pegs are just cotter pins that you can get at any hardware store. Bring one of your frame arms to make sure you get the right size. The tape can be attached by stapling with a heavy duty stapler (not one from your desk).
