Chad - this is an awesome, awesome video! I live in Canada - and I do not have the right gear for much of the year. I had no idea where to begin, what products are out there, the benefits, risks, and downsides for each option - thank you so much for putting this together.

I’ve recently read that the 120 rule is not quite the safest guideline because if the water is cold enough, the air temperature doesn’t really help offset that. The most important factor by far is water temperature. Enjoyed your video.
@ChadHooverFishing
@ChadHooverFishing 2 года назад
Yessir. It’s just an overall guideline and if you use it, you are close, obviously if it happens to be 70 degrees with 50 water temps you are better off in anti-exposure gear and will die if you spend very much time at all in water that cold
@pdfahie
@pdfahie 2 года назад
@@ChadHooverFishing that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure what water temperature is considered very dangerous for a short time period. The more I watch of safety kayak videos, the more reluctant I am of fishing in December and beyond, even in my 10’ pond prowler plastic bass boat

Great video! To keep fishing in colder weather (we're nearing the "120" threshold fast!), I took your advice and bought NRS cold-weather gear. It's an expense, but it should allow me to fish for another 6 weeks or more. Then there's ice! And no, I'm not interested in ice fishing (though if I change my mind I got the gear!). BTW, I indicated my purchases were due to your recommendation. Love your channel and videos! Another "large" fisherman: Roger, The Smiling BassHole

Been reading your book Chad, I appreciate you being the leader and pioneer to the kayak bass fishing world; it has literally changed my life. My dilemma, I went to pick up those NRS sidewinder bibs and noticed that the new version is no longer made with the belt that allows for sealing into a dry top etc. Do you run the new version? Would you even recommend it? And if not, what other product could stand in? Especially here in Texas, I feel like the versatility of those bibs were awesome. I just don’t know if want to spend that money on the new version if it’s an inferior product.

Chad, Great content as always, I'm glad you focused on layering your gear appropriate for the water conditions as well as the outside air temperatures. Whenever the water temperature gets into the mid 50's I switch over to my waders and once I put the waders on I always wear my #SilkWeightUnderwear under them (courtesy of the USA) moister winking base layer and I build from their all determined on how cold the air temperature is during that trip.

Have you taken a swim with the bibs paired with a dry top? If so, how did they perform? I think I’ve narrowed it down between the sidewinder and the Nookie Pro Bib Double. Even the people at Kokatat don’t express much confidence in their Whirlpool Bib as immersion protection (when you actually talk to them).

great info but the the thing is it want do you no good after you got to warm and hot so you unzip or take a layer off then when your happy comfy again thats when it happens you roll up on log and next thing your swimming and guess what all that money you put into that gear and your wet cold .

Robert coggins okay, so don’t do it. I just vent my gear when I’m sitting still on the water or when I’m Working to load and unload gear when it causes me to sweat. But you go ahead and do you however you want to do you because that’s the beautiful thing about life.

Great info Chad! I'm new to kayaking and was wondering, with the latest kayaks that are really stable; what has cause you to go into the water? I'm an older dude looking to get a very stable kayak, so I'm curious what gets people in the water. The Bonafide ss127 seems really stable. I'm probably getting the Sportsman 120 PDL, wish Bonafide had a pedal drive system. Love all your videos, watched many... Thanks shipmate, USN 75-79

If it's cold, bring a coat. $5-10 at goodwill. If its raining, bring a rain coat. $5. If it's hot, bring an umbrella. $5. $15 is a lot to spend on fishing, but consider it life insurance.

Yeah, that’s a myth. Especially if you wear a belt, a dry top and/or the PFD snug over the top. I plan to do a visor on this topic this winter to further prove that it is a myth that waders will drag you down.
