Guys, I need to apologise for my poor choice of words in this video. Body confidence is NOT about "tucking away" parts of yourself you don't like. What I meant by this is that there are so many women who wear baggy clothes from head to toe because they are afraid of their shape, or of certain parts of themselves, being seen. And I wanted those women to know that it is possible to wear something that shows off your natural shape, and that draws attention to the parts of yourself you love and that make you feel more confident, without emphasizing the parts you feel less confident about. Let me be clear... we should NOT have to ever feel ashamed about parts of our body. Unfortunately, society has bombarded us with images of "perfection" for so long, that many of us do feel this way. So instead of pretending that's simply not the case and saying "don't ever not like parts of yourself", I'm being realistic, accepting that this does happen sometimes, and trying not to let that stop women from wearing the clothes they want to wear. If you are 100% in love with your whole body then well done! I envy you. But so many of us are still trying to get to that point in life and this video is for them. I hope you all understand and again, sorry if it didn't come across that way. x

Would like to add that not all women wear baggy clothes to hide bits they don't like. I was always into the oversize clothes- mostly as a physical comfort thing. I prefer a shirt that looks 3 sizes too big and flows around me because it never feels tight, pulls weird, and is oddly cozy. However, the number of times I have been approached and lectured by shop assistants and other random female shoppers to tell me I don't need to dress like this, I should be more confident, that I was letting all women down by wearing these clothes is disheartening to say the least. In summers ioften lived in swimsuits and never had an issue with wearing form fitting clothing- which I used to quiet a lot as I absolutely loved getting super dressed up (ballgown for the movies etc). I was just happier and physically got more enjoyment out of life to wear baggy clothes 90% of the time. In the intervening years somewhat baggy- very baggy has become necessity due to medical problems that mean I am never sure what torso I will wake up with and also am sometimes connected to various devices that better fit under baggy clothing. I am still regularly approached in stores about how I shouldn't wear such loose fitting clothing. I'm pretty I don't need to hide it and so many other non compliment compliments. That were always kinda shit but right now just feel hurtful. I guess what I'm saying is none of us can be sure why people are choosing to wear the clothes they do so don't judge either way. I'm not a 'bad woman letting the team down for wearing loose clothing and women who like a bodycon dress are not bad women'. Wear what you want but if you're reading this and wear loose fitting and would prefer to be wearing the bodycon outfits just do it. Life's too bloody short to wait for the perfect body or the perfect time. The perfect time is now if you are physically able to do so. Sorry this is so ranty just wanted to point out not everyone wearing loose clothing wishes to be wearing something else or are trying to hide something. Sometimes that's what they like. Sometimes that's what they need to do. Again sorry for the rant. :)

I think it came across to those of us who are familiar of you but good to clarify. I really loved the points about not trying to make yourself look like a size you aren't and not worrying about wearing light colors if you're larger. Sure there are certain guidelines to accent parts you'd like to and draw less to parts you want to play down, however, what you wear should make you happy. I know many women, myself included, who wear things they "shouldn't" and get compliments all the time. If what you've chosen to adorn your body makes you feel good, you'll naturally be more confident and people will see that!

Ah, about what Louise said, about wearing things just bc it is slimming. I remember my mum would always be like "but darling can't you wear that other dress instead, it's so slimming." And I would answer "but i don't care about that, I'm not thin and everyone knows it, I wanna wear something I feel pretty in, not thin" It's not mutually exclusive, u can feel pretty without feeling thin, and i just feel that is really important.

Biggest and best tip. Buy clothes that actually fit you! Don't squeeze yourself into a dress or pair of trousers in the fitting room and buy them because you will inevitably not wear them and will be in severe discomfort when you sit down! (Speaking from experience here!)

I'm similar shape to Louise and I think that horizontal stripes accentuate my waist quite nicely (at least in my opinion). A few years ago I decided I'm too big to benefit from all advices how to look smaller (vertical lines, dark colours and so on) so I can as well wear what I like without worrying about that. I think it's important to try on as many things as possible before buying because it helps to learn what shapes and patterns suit you.

Ooh, one confidence tip I have is... however hard it may be, don't compare yourself to other people and don't try to copy other people - whether that be your friends or models in magazines, or random pictures of people you see on Tumblr! Like you guys said in the video, everyone has things about them that they love, and things that they hate, including those people. So those people you're comparing yourself to aren't perfect, and you shouldn't strive to look exactly like them or copy everything they wear! Have your own style and dress the way you want, in what makes YOU comfortable. Like Yves Saint Laurent once said: "Fashions fade, style is eternal.". :)

Advice like this is awesome and super helpful a lot of the time, but also remember that it's totally fine to just say screw it and wear fabric that clings to your tummy or a skirt that makes your cellulite stand out. It's great to be able to tuck away the bits you don't like, but it's not a crime to let your imperfections see the light of day. Not only is it perfectly okay, people /can/ find you attractive even if you've got visible stretch marks on your thighs or fat rolls or if you wear no makeup and your hair is a mess. There is nothing inherently ugly about any of these things; we've all just grown up in a culture that doesn't like them. I met a girl a few years ago who I thought was ugly. She was dressed in an old men's t-shirt and loose cargo pants and her hair was dull and she was not at all what society tells us is attractive. But eventually I got to know her and I can honestly say that the way I saw her completely changed. She still doesn't care what she wears and nothing about her has changed, but now I think she's one of the prettiest people I know. Before getting to know her, I thought everything people said about beauty being in the eye of the beholder and beauty coming from inside etc etc etc was just meant to make us feel better, but it's completely true, and knowing that has made me care a lot less about not being perfect. But I still enjoy looking good, and this was a great video.
@TheHazelHayes
@TheHazelHayes 10 лет назад
Oh I hope that's not the message we gave at all! I would never want anyone to think they HAD to hide their "ugly" parts. I don't even think that people have ugly parts! It's just that some of us get self conscious about different things because of society constantly bombarding us with images of "perfection" and it's sad to see so many people feeling like they can't wear what they want to wear because of that. We only meant that if there are parts of yourself you don't like, that's perfectly normal, but you should embrace the bits you do like too and go out into the world looking and feeling good... whatever that means to you!! x
@amzaaar

ChewingSand I think you guys did a great job of keeping it body positive. :) I just wanted to add something because a lot of women I know fret quite a lot about keeping certain things hidden as though it's required, and it's not. I certainly try to dress in a way that draws attention away from things I don't like so I totally understand it! I'm sorry if it came across as critique. I love you both!

I LOVED that dress you wore at the Stellar shoot, you looked fantastic :) And Louise you're wonderful, you're proof that society's judgement on size relating to beauty is bullshit! A beautiful woman is beautiful, end of! And dressing to feel your best in a flawed society is so important! "Not an invisibility cloak" haha! Being somebody who has overcome body dysmorphia issues and eating disorders, you'll always be a huge role model to me! xxx

The tip Louise made on not trying to dress yourself down a size but just working with what you have and wearing what you look and feel good in regardless of whether it is "slimming" is incredibly helpful. I'm a size 8, occasionally a 10, and I always tried to squeeze into a smaller size or wear things that made me look that little bit slimmer when I should have just been making my size 8 body look like a nice size 8 body rather than an odd size 6. I remember when I first saw this and I wouldn't wear anything too tight because I felt like I could just hide and pretend I was a smaller size, now I wear dresses and skirts and skinny jeans and anything I damn well please!

i would say one thing ive learned is to fake it till you make it. you could be having the crappiest day and just feel so bad when you look in the mirror. but if you look in the mirror and point out one thing you like, and keep doing that, you start to love yourself more. and just being very open about your shape. I struggled with this for some time because i thought i should have felt bad that i had to shop in plus size and couldnt purchase things from most stores. But after a while i really started to love my body and i did a body positive post on instagram saying that it was perfectly fine to love my body. after that, it just became so easy for me to except that i cant buy stuff from alot of stores and that PERFECTLY FINE. and it was easier for me to talk about my body and clothes with friends because i no longer felt as ashamed as i did before. Its definitely been a journey, but loving myself was one of the best things i could have ever done. And i honestly could not have done it without Louise. She really has been one of my top/first inspirations throughout this whole journey.

I love how honest this video was! So many people these days are all "nobody has any bad parts, everybody is perfect", which ends up making us people who don't necessarily see themselves as perfect feel like we're doing something wrong. For two people so iconic to the younger, internet generation of girls, it's amazing to see you sending out the message (and in such a lighthearted and fun way that it's almost subliminal too!) that it's completely okay to not feel comfortable with every part of you, as long as you allow yourself to recognise the parts that you do like and to make the most of them! It's videos like this that help my confidence to grow and help me accept myself as who I am, and I sincerely hope there's others who feel the same way! Well done ladies, this was brilliant x

Something that I think is important to remember is that you own the clothes they don't own you. What I mean is instead of thinking you don't look good in the piece that you are trying on try to frame it differently and say this isn't the dress I was looking for not my body isn't right for this dress. I hope this makes sense! Ultimately I think people should wear whatever they want but sometimes it's hard to remember that your body isn't what's wrong if you aren't pleased with the look.

Speaking as a 16 year old, I want to say that this video helped me a lot. As much as people just assume that younger people are confident because we just are, I think videos like this need to be promoted a lot more for teenagers. Body confidence isn't taught in schools, and lots of people don't want to talk about it because it would make them more insecure to highlight their insecurities to a friend. A lot of young people have issues surrounding their bodies and while I know that this video wasn't completely focussed around body confidence, I felt so much better being told it was okay to be whoever and whatever you are by somebody who wasn't a size 6 glamour model. Both of you look fabulous and I just wanted to thank you for making videos like this that can make people like me feel okay about themselves for once. xxxx

A tip that has helped me a lot lately is look outside your sizes and outside your gender clothes. I am always buying men's sweaters and men's button down shirts and altering them to have a more feminine fit. My favorite shirt currently is a men's button down, what i've learned is the quicker you stop caring about what other people will think you look like the sooner you'll like what you look like :)

My top tip is dont listen to anything anyone says. I used to get a lot of grief from my friends at school about wearing dresses all the time (still do) but I just kept doing it because that's what made me feel good and what I was comfortable in; the confidence will come later, just keep doing what works for you. You're the one wearing the clothes not other people.

My confidence tip is to stop approaching it with the mentality that "every inch of me is perfect and I have to love every part of me." Who are we kidding? That's not going to happen. It's okay not to be perfect. It's okay not to love every inch of you. At the end, our bodies don't really determine who we are. It's much more important to be happy with the kind of person you are. Kindness and positiveness are much more important than a flat tummy.

Very lovely and wise! For me, when I'm wearing something that I love but don't feel super confident in, I just try to seriously work it. Just half pretend that I don't give a crap what anyone thinks, and then I start to actually believe it and then I just have an awesome time looking fabulous.

Learning what suits you is the best thing you can do for your confidence. Once you know what will accentuate your figure and what won't you just stop trying the things that wouldn't suit you and suddenly not only you don't waste as many time trying on things you will not like, but 95% of what you try looks lovely on you. Ha. No, but, for real, I have the same body shape than Louise and I stick to pretty much the same rules, and I am completely obsessed with both that pink skirt and a yellow one she wore in another video. My wardrobe is much happier (as I am) since I embraced the top-tucked-into-skirt or dress-that-accentuates-the-waist trends.

I'd love to wear more colours, my wardrobe is predominately shades (blacks, whites and greys)... All of the summer fashion will be here soon though so I'll take your advice into the shops with me! X

Thanks, ladies, I really needed a video like this. I've had a couple of people (including my dad) comment on my weight and shape this past week and I was feeling rather down about it. I would like to be assertive and say something like "Who are you to decide what I need to do and/or look like?!" But sometimes it's hard. And it can still make me feel like I'm not good enough. Even though rationally I know that's nonsense. So this video and especially the end messages from both of you helped me see the other side of the body confidence point-of-view again.
