How To Drive a BMW E60 M5 SMG Transmission - And How Not to Drive a BMW E60 M5
There are a few ways to drive the BMW E60 M5 and its SMG 3 transmission, and there a few ways that you shouldn't drive the BMW E60 and it's transmission. Let me show you the best ways to drive it, and how to maximize your enjoyment of this great BMW.
The BMW SMG 3 transmission is relatively unique, and it carries with it a few secrets. The normal automation "drive" mode is the worst, and most sluggish way to drive the BMW E60 M5. It's also not the way to drive the BMW E60 M5 SMG transmission. Don't do it like that because the transmission is sluggish and it just feels like you're driving a terrible car.
Instead, you want to put the car into manual, use the paddle shifters, and get this car up to shift speed 5. Don't use the 6th speed shift, but instead keep it in 5 and you'll feel like the car is fast, fun, and you'll enjoy driving the car daily. Basically, this is how to drive a BMW SMG transmission, and more specifically, the BMW E60.

I've been riding 100,000km for 10 years. During that time, I always drive only in S-6 mode. Manual only with paddle shift. Of course I sometimes use up to 8000 rpm. Still, I have never changed the clutch. The important thing is to use 1st gear when it drops below 10km / h. Never start in 2nd gear. That way the clutch will last longer. It's thrilling but definitely fun.

I use level two(SMG2 on 2005 E46 M3) all the time. Level ONE skips first gear. No good. Even at Level one two, the shifts are MUCH FASTER THAN TWO SECONDS. They are purposely slow, but LESS than ONE SECOND. I use level TWO auto shift in severe traffic jams in South Florida. Awesome. When traffic clears up I readjust. It takes no time to push the rocker switch at the shifter's basr. I LOVE MY SMG2 in my E46 M3! There is free CSL software online that can be downloaded that make shifts almost as fast as dual clutch!!

I just brought my m5 e60 a month ago and I’m learning about it little by little Lear a lot watching your vids thanks... so this car is better to be driven in manual mode so that it can cause less damage to the smg? When driving in manual and let’s say I’m in 3rd gear can I drop it into neutral like a regular manual transmission to hit the brakes and slow down instead of downshifting? If not what the best way to downshift when your approaching a red light or would it downshift on its own?? And this is something that I don’t seem to understand what’s the proper warm up procedure b4 you can start revving the car or pushing the car to its limits? Is it when the oil level is at half?

Sort of hard to say without hearing it, but for me as a rule with the S85 engine, if it runs, and there are no engine lights or codes, it is likely good to go. I know these cars make a few noises that many cars do not such as the cold start.

@deplorabledave1048

Little known fact: major maintenence item at 60k to 80k miles is the 12V MOTOR that drives the pump. Remove motor, disassemble, clean brake dust with Brake Clean. Inspect commutator and all bearings and bushings. Reassemble and reinstall. If need be, it can be rebuilt by several outfits in the United States. Just send yours in as a core, and if you get a rebuilt motor in return. In Fort Lauderdale, we have an outstanding place called Lauderdale Battery that could rebuild one on site. My motor just needed to be cleaned and reinstalled. It was severely clogged with dust from the bushes, but the brush length and all other components were still okay.

So manual 5 mode puts the least wear on the clutch just as I thought. But do you drive in manual mode too when you drive in the city or there's a traffic jam? And how do you downshift when you come to a stop light for example or you come to a full stop - do you downshift till you reach the second gear and then you just break and shift to first gear when standing still or do you fully downshift to first gear. The latter isn't as good for the transmission I think.
@ep9321
@ep9321 6 лет назад
Philipp K I drive mine in manual mode all the time. It’s just smoother. Honestly, I drive with 3 bars. I, for some reason thought driving with 5 bars kills the clutch sooner. Lolol
@ECPP
@ECPP 6 лет назад
Its harder on the clutch with 5 bars if you are driving really hard such as full throttle and higher revs due to the driveline shock on every shift. If you are driving moderately to spirited where it does not hammer the system, then this will allow longer life since there is less slippage to the disc when engaging. It generally boils down to to your drive style. BTW, I always drive in manual, city driving included.
@Calx91

hello so yes i dropped the smg and the clutch was gone at 76k miles. which is fine i ordered a new sach clutch for 500 the fly wheel was healthy and passed all the tests for a dual mass fly wheel so i reused it. otherwise i would have to get one from luck for 1k . I reinstalled everything took me about a day in total i did this with a lifted bay at my shop. I then reprogrammed the transmission via ISTA D utilizing the 3 step process and also realigned the shift forks. Car is just now finishing the brake in process for the new clutch it takes about 1k miles and its running like new.
@republicofu.s9642

@Honesty First ok so the car totally stopped and it would throw me back and forth when shifting gears and then i pulled over because every time it changed gear, i felt i was being rear ended..so took the car to European shop and clutch is gone..now its being replace. Clutch and mass fly wheel change was recommended because its best to change the fly wheel at the same time( they come in one kit, cant be done separately).

As an auto they are a total joke as a manual they are jerky unpredictable and very fragile so I have heard. What were BMW thinking. I own one of the last M6 V10's made with this box. They should have just stuck a 6 speed manual in it as they did for a few US cars. I had an SL63 that was great in auto and seemless in manual and you didn't need to set it up to work. It just Worked. This was a case of any BMW being too clever for their own good. Most important thing to remember in M mode is to lift off the gas between shifts, or the car slams into gear which can only mean excessive wear. Great car, with a confused gear box.
