How to drive on the Motorway - UK tips and tricks 

I got lost and ended up on the motorway on my first drive alone , I did considerably well as I made it home alive. Lol

Agreed about motorway driving being waaaay easier than in town. I live in London and work in Slough, motorway all the way A316-M25-M4. I find this drive so much less stressful than driving anywhere in London, both inner and even suburbs. there is just so much less going on or that could go wrong on a motorway. Obviously, if something goes wrong on a motorway, the end result is much higher to be very bad than at slower speeds in town, but you just have to stay alert and vigilant. Thanks for this video.

I passed my test on friday and went on the M25 on Saturday. I was scared at some point, but God was there for me. Tips: use a good car and have enough petrol on your car, check mirrors always, watch upcoming cars, be alert, don't take no drugs or alcohol before you drive. I'm so proud of myself. I made it!!!!

The two second rule is seriously good, I noticed on a couple of occasions you were under it. The rule works at all speeds.

Good advice. I would add, when overtaking actually overtake. Too many drivers pull alongside a vehicle then match their speed. This often causes long delays for following vehicles.

for info, overtaking on the left is not actually illegal. its discouraged and if done erratically you could be charged with driving without due care but the highway code does not prohibit it

Thanks for this excellent film. The very first time I used the M4 motorway to journey to Wales, I stuck in the inside lane. I was surprised that so many drivers kept sounding their horns, angrily at me. Mind you, I might have been better off in a car rather than walking.

Generally excellent, excellent comments. Merging onto a highway is almost the only time I use a lot of accelerator. 02:48: "Black BMW slowed a bit too much", I note that they were maintaining a safe following distance.

This is a comprehensive guide. The only problem is joining the motorway from the slip road. Some drivers won't let you. I nearly bumped into two lorries who refused to let me in.

In most countries/states/provinces, only hogging the hammer lane is considered an offense. The middle lane exists as a THRU lane to avoid slow traffic in the right lane (or in the UK -- the LEFT Lane). The Ohio Turnpike (Interstates 76 and 80) was two lanes for the longest time, then a MASSIVE construction project took place 10-15 years ago, and now it's THREE lanes all the way across the state in both directions to better handle increased commercial traffic.

If everybody was to keep the gap you had in front especially in lane one it would leave an insufficient distance for merging traffic. if for some reason a car in front had to break hard and you distracted for any reason, ie, changing your radio, checking your speed, looking at your passenger in conversation, checking your side view mirror etc you would have no chance of avoiding a rear end collision. Also it is not illegal to overtake on inside lane whether traffic is slow moving or not.

I've always found urban and city driving much more stressful and hazardous than motorway driving, although motorway driving is more fatal if an accident does occur. Although they don't incorporate motorways in driving lessons they do teach dual carriage way use, which has the same basic principals as a motorway. The most dangerous types of roads are rural A and B roads.

Don't forget,when joining a motorway, it is the vehicle on the motorway has the right of way!!be prepared to stop on the slip road if you cannot join the motorway due to heavy traffic!!

Had my second driving lesson today, had great fun! Still a bit hard to get the grips with the clutch when slowing down, but other than that it went well so far!

I’m perfectly fine driving on the motorway, it’s getting on that I hate; especially in my instructors 1 litre. I’m going like 55 by the end of the ramp, and that’s with staying in 3rd until 4.5k rpm.

Im British and lived in England for 25 years and never drove, I've always used public transport and while never driving on the road myself the rules flow of traffic obviously got into me, Long story short i met my now Wife and moved to the Us to be with her and had to learn to drive straight away my first motorway/ interstate drive was from Florida to North Georgia on I75 around 400 miles, Heading into Atlanta is literally insane parts of that motorway depending on where you enter can be up to 11 lanes of traffic and the slip roads curve and enter from everywhere then when you get past that and head north the roads rise up 5000 feet up into the mountains of Georgia North Carolina and Tennessee, I got threw in the deep end for sure, Yes its daunting at first and there will be sections on the motorway where everyone speeds up for a time for no apparent reason and that does raise the anxiety for a while but for the most part motorway driving to me is actually easier than normal driving the speed becomes relative after a short time and youll find yourself relax that being said the margin for error is obviously less but motorways don't exactly have hairpin turns .

You have not mentioned lightly touching the brake pedal with left foot to activate brake lights to annoy the bloke behind.

i just read you are not supposed to place warning triangles behind your car if you breakdown on the motorway, im not sure if this is correct?

I like to approach the motorway as fast as possible pull straight into the third lane without indicating and then i like to flash the person infront into surrendering back to where they belong. Same goes for exiting, sometimes i like to leave it to the verry last second running over the hash markings and showering the wanker behind with gravel.

Does it mean that if you are in the left lane, then you are not allowed to overtake any vehicle in that lane at all unless if there’s traffic? The lane bit confuses when it comes to motorways.

Remember everyone keep your distance don't become the average driver in the UK 2 seconds is the minimum to stop in time in dry conditions, 4 seconds in rain/ground is wet and 20 seconds if the ground is ics

The worst bit of motorway driving is those truck drivers who just as you are about to overtake suddenly indicate and start to move expecting you to either just move out of the way or slow down.

I've been driving a year and still to scared to go on 😩

City driving is so much more stressful. Both for you and your car. The only time highway driving can be worse is if you're in bumper to bumper traffic. Clutch, 1st, creep, clutch, brake, neutral, clutch, 1st, creep... gets old reeeal quick.

I try to keep a cap at lest 2 seconds behind a car and three in rain or poor visibility .

Accelerating on the slip road up to speed of the motorway traffic: why do so many drivers find this such a difficult principle to grasp? The number of times I've been stuck behind someone on the slip road doing about 40mph.

This video is very helpful for beginners. This video should be played to everyone who have just passed their test! Btw, motorway driving is very easy, easier than driving on normal roads, you just need to make sure you are paying full attention at all times.

I ended up accidentally taking the wrong exit for being in the wrong lane and not changing in time to where I wanted to go. Had to take a detour but still got there quickly. I noticed that BMWs seem to never be helpful... never giving way, never letting you go etc

I wish people would just properly accelerate on sliproads. Really pisses me off when people dawdle down at 45-50mph, because merging at that speed is just so fucking dangerous. Depending on the sliproad, I can usually reach a good 60mph before joining.

Very informative but the narration was quite fast for me to catch up with the viewing comprehension.

I prefer the motorway to country roads with only two lanes with a national speed limit and lots of bends, now they are dangerous and something needs to be done. Tailgating, overtaking with oncoming traffic, overtaking on bends, it is insanely dangerous, even if you're the best driver and totally safe some other idiot will come along and do something stupid.

The only thing that ruins my motorway experience is lorry drivers who don't let you merge or join a lane

Wouldn't recommend anyone but if you want some stress and tension then give it a go. Be prepared for endless unmanned roadworks, traffic jams, closed lanes, narrow lanes, huge trucks in huge numbers slowing your journey down and pray there's no road accidents.

Where did that myth of being illegal to undertake come from? It's legal to pass on inside irrespective of speed. Very few Brits understand their own Highway Code, and this video is contributing to it.
