Thank you for the clear tutorial. Very helpful. Someone once told me 4 wheel drive doesn't mean 4wheel stop. Made it easy to remember.

Thumbs up for the "everything stops the same" public safety announcement. So tired of people thinking because they have awd/4wd they'll stop better in snow/ice. Tires are pretty much the only thing that matters in stopping, and worn all-seasons don't cut it.
@l337pwnage
@l337pwnage 7 лет назад
If you have ABS, that is true, without ABS my CJ stops better because the strong front discs can assist the weaker rear drums for more even braking. Then there is the whole thing where, statistically, non-ABS vehicles stop faster in snow than ABS vehicles. My fastest stops were my rwd vehicles when I would throw it in reverse, lol, but that was tough on the driveline.

If anything bigger 4x4s stop slower because of the extra weight compared to smaller sedans/economy cars. In light snow I always found little FWD ecos with winter tires were great, the only time I really notice any advantage of 4x4 is in the really really deep snow.

A front wheel drive car goes through snow way better than a rear wheel drive.

Henning Sainog that is completely false. It depends on the car and the gear ratios and the weight ratios of the car

The thing I use my 4 Low most for is going down hill in snow where I might encounter ice. I find going 4 MPH without having to ride the brake very helpful.

4w low helps with ice?
@cameronreece5569
@cameronreece5569 4 года назад
@@bigcsbigbrother3685 yes and no hes saying for down hill using engine braking instead of your regular brakes and locking the tires up and then you lose steering
@Dave-ek2jx
@Dave-ek2jx 3 года назад
What some people don't tell you, however, is that 4wd can also lock your wheels up. If slipperiness exceeds your grip, you will begin to slide regardless of whether you are using engine braking or standard braking. In icy conditions, stick with standard braking because you can modulate that much more easily and smoothly than engine braking. Yes, on big, hills that can get your brakes pretty hot. But if it is that icy out you should be avoiding hills like that to begin with. Something my dad (a pilot) used to tell me sums it up very well: "A superior pilot uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which may require his superior skills."

Yes it is possible to go into and out of 4Lo while stopped but there may be difficulty getting clutch teeth engaged. Quoted from my 2014 Wrangler Sport 4dr manual page 442: "Shifting into or out of 4L is possible with the vehicle completely stopped; however, difficulty may occur due to the mating teeth not being properly aligned. Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred method is with the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4L with the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h)." Trust me - this works. That aside - I live in NJ and there wasn't anything I couldn't drive through this winter in 4HI with the stock tires; never needed 4LO. Jeeps are way more capable than a lot of people give them credit for.

Having worked with editing suites & footage blending from different angles myself, I know how much post-production work you had to endure. Biggest problem get rid of the MT tires, they're junk for anything but mud they're Mud Terrain tires not snow terrain tires, they're terrible for snow/ice. Buy a set of winter rated tires not M&S, but actual snow tires and you'll find yourself very rarely needing 4WD at all.

Step one: Make sure your 4 wheel drive has winter tires on it. Trust me all tires are NOT the same. Step two: Drive slow for your conditions, well within the limits of your tires. Always remember some idiot out there will be driving in the snow on summer tires. They will slide into you or in front of you. Look out for them.

@@tml184 lol Tell that to the new Rubicon owner who took his dad and two sons up above larch mountain and got stuck in a wide spot in the road at maybe a 7 percent road incline. When I went up past him in my old Chevy van I was a bit concerned. When I came back 30 minutes later the kids were done having fun and we're starting to whine and he was closer to going over the edge into the big trees than earlier and he looked defeated. No cell service up there. It actually sorta a giant switch back right before grouse trail or some such wide spot in the dirt trail. My van had 235/85r16 on it. Blizzak of course because they make a huge difference in snow. I hobbled my winch and a spare battery and chain together and winched him back up on the packed trail. His jeep was brand new. He had no recovery gear with him. I hadn't yet hardwired or hard mounted my winch at the time.

Sue Ackehurst it snowed twice since I bought my TJ a little over a year ago (the afternoon I bought it and once this year). Neither were any amount that I would of worried about if I was driving my camaro. It’s disappointing. The snow is the only chance I have to have some fun in my Jeep since there are no trails that are close. The state park owns most of the woods around here (no motorized vehicles on trails. 638 acres and you better be walking or on a horse or bicycle if you want to enjoy them) and the rest is privately owned and they don’t like people on their property. The closest OVR is 1.5hrs away and costs a fortune for what it is.

Fellas think about the jeep tires used traveling over the Alps in heavy snow, thick mud, ruts, and water during WW2. Those tires were tall and narrow with deep grooves. Today you can't find a tall tire that doesn't get wider with height. Wide tires push the snow, narrow tires have less resistance while cutting through the snow, mud or water. Get yourself a good set a meats.

WhiteNuckle ChargerR/T mail trucks are no longer jeeps and haven’t been since the 80s. That mail truck is a Grumman. It is based off a 1982 S10 with a quad 4 and auto. It has the rear suspension of a 4wd 82 s10 and the front end of a 2WD 82 S10 (which is why the track-with is different in the front vs the rear. The last one was built in the mid 90s with a scheduled 20 year life cycle. However due to the US Post Office being broke, they have now extended the life cycle to 30 years. Many of them are on their 3rd or 4th engine and trans with well over 350,000 miles on them (I’ve seen some that are pushing 500,000 miles). It costs the post office $300 million to repair the fleet every year, but it would cost $5 billion to replace the fleet. I know all this cause my shop fixes the 2 local post offices’ trucks (as the post office outsources the repair and maintenance of their fleet to independent repair shops, though they supply the parts as needed).

Thanks for the physics lesson. Wish more people understand physics and leave more distance between other vehicles. 4wd is more controllable, but "an object in motion will remain in motion" , deceleration is still the same. Has to do with mass of the object.

Great video! I have a 2022 JLU Rubicon but also had 2012 and 2018 JKU Rubicons. My 2018 JKU met an untimely demise when it was t-boned by a driver who ran red light.. The JKUs felt far sturdier and just felt more capable. Were/Are they? I dunno, but I said what I said. Missin' my JKs.

I have a 2015 wrangler sport 6-speed manual too, however I don't engage clutch when shifting from RWD to 4H, nor do I do it when I switch back from 4H to RWD. I don't think the manual says you need to use it either. I only press it when switching from 4H to N, and to 4L. I know the manual says you can roll up to 2-3 mph when switching to Low Range, but for me it's best to do it when completely stopped.

Yep no need to use the clutch to shift between 2WD or 4WD high range, only for going into or out of low range.

Not sure about JKs, but I know my TJ doesn't have a differential between the front and rear axles, so I wouldn't go anywhere near 55mph. My mom's RR has a differential between the axles, so you can go as fast as you want, which might be the case for the newer Jeeps too.

Once 4WD is engaged you can drive as fast as you want in high range, differential has nothing to do with speed. A lack of a center differential just gives you a 50/50 front to rear torque split so driving on dry pavement or even wet pavement where there isn't enough slippage will cause binding when turning....you can drive in 4WD on dry pavement all you want in a straight line its the turns that cause driveline binding and damage.

Nice info man!👌🏼. So on a good condition weather on a road o hw. Is it better on 2WD?.. and the 4WD is for snow, rain, and mud?
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 4 года назад
2WD for pavement, and even for parking lots you'll find in 4WD trying to turn into parking spots in a plowed parking lot you'll have a hard time with the vehicle's axles binding in the turn. I shift into 2WD when I'm in plowed parking lots to keep from binding up the drive train and the hopping that happens as a result of not having enough slippage to keep from binding the system up. 4WD for low traction conditions, snow, mud, sand. If you need 4WD for rain you need new tires.

The best explanation. Thank you. I am thinking about purchasing a new 2019 JL 4dr. My only concern is how is rwd in snow in 2 hi? Driving on the highway? Stability wise? Can I quickly switch to 4wd if the jeep starts to slip? I live in Canada so lots of snow up here and would be purchasing winter tires. Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Biggest thing is getting tires rated for snow. Jeep Wranglers in general aren't the greatest snow vehicles due to their short wheelbase and lighter weight, they tend to act more like ice skates than a vehicle in snow/ice...so your best bet if you plan on actually driving one in bad weather is to get snow tires. They don't handle well in 2WD, and even in 4WD with the short wheel base they'll switch directions on you very fast if you aren't careful.

I use low gearing and engine braking to slow down with light touches of the brake pedal. Forget ABS for a second...if you hit the brakes to hard and lock up the wheels, not only are you sliding but now you can't turn. The front wheels need to be spinning for the car/truck/jeep to turn.
