I would advice anyone that wants to dive in DNB to listen to the radio one drum and bass show, can easily be found on youtube and is presented by rene la vice. The host and both the guest DJs go every week through new DnB song as well as old school stuff and the genres vary per artist and week. Really great to find your own genre.

True but some newbies might get frustrated by the sounds they hear from that sort of show that they cant make there own stuff sound like there's or they end up creating identical sounds and they wont stand out. Moonboys track was very good but dont stand out among the hundreds or even thousands of identical sounding tracks. Being Unique is key.

i think this its not the best place to learn about drum & bass! Its good quick guide, but in terms of sound and quality.... this guy its more near to the noisy/distorted sounds in the whole song and in dnb this "technique" doesn´t work pretty well because we need to mix 2 or more tracks at the same time in the sets.

@@mrrayner7162 it’s pretty soft gatekeeping, really more an issue of cultural awareness. Dnb is a pretty longstanding genre and people just want those within the scene to receive the respect and recognition that they are due. While I enjoy music by the likes of skrillex, that development within dubstep eclipsed the origins of the genre and all preceding stylistic variations; people are scared to see the same happen to dnb. Of course anyone is capable and welcome to learn and enjoy and I’d encourage anyone to do so, people just don’t want the genre to be bent beyond recognition.

my tip to anyone to learn dnb is by starting at the roots with some jungle. try making a really complex break the continuously evolves through the song like atmospheric intelligent drum n bass from the 90s. you can learn so much when you build a whole track around the drums and how simplicity an sometimes be the key to dnb. i have been making dnb sinc 2005 and its good to sometimes layer drums too so they become proper thick and interesting but with jump up you might want less layers otherwise it will become neuro sounding also though this can create hybrid dnb tracks. i sometimes make stuff that cant put into a sub genre as its a mix of a few. if your using flstudio try using a small amount of the stock overdrive on the main channel during mastering as it sometimes is the key to making everything snap and pop loud.
@dedrxbbit7549

7:08 this is a good idea, but i have a better suggestion. Don’t do ANYTHING but +7. Serum and many other VSTs use that slider as a SEMITONE value, meaning it’s based on the chromatic scale. This is useful in many applications of music, but not useful when learning music. +4 semitones is a major 3rd. If we start at C and go up 4 notes on the keyboard chromatically, we hit C#, D, Eb, and finally E which is the major 3rd of C major. If your song doesn’t really have any minor chords in it, that’s fine, but it really limits you to what notes you can play while still making sure it sounds in key. A better option would be to use +7, a perfect 5th. The only note you couldn’t play would be the diminished chord of whatever scale you’re using, which in C major would be B since the diminished chord uses a b5, being F in this case. It’s a much safer route and you’re options are much more open. Instead of 3 notes that you can play in key, now you can play 6. Sure there’s also artistic liberties, but if you’re not one to tinker with complex music theory (which I honestly feel like most of this community falls into that category), then it’s best to take the safe route to make a cleaner track.
@dedrxbbit7549
@dedrxbbit7549 2 года назад
Also, little tidbit. Serum did a bad job at naming things because the coarse pitch is actually finer tuning than the fine tune. Fine is based on the cent value. 100 cents is a semitone, but is still locked to a grid essentially. Coarse pitch is much more fluid and allows you to get those really really fine adjustments, so if you’re making a reese bass and are looking for a very specific warble to it, I’d recommend using coarse pitch along side the fine tune.

To compound on a few ideas now that I’ve been thinking about it for a few hours, you can use the major 3rd, but I’d recommend having a macro adjustment so that only a major 3rd and a minor 3rd can be played. 100% on the macro is +4, 0% is +3. Just an idea if you REALLY prefer the sound of a 3rd against the root, but i still think it’s safer to use a perfect 5th. On the other part I mentioned, you can also put a macro on the coarse pitch and automate the amount of warble that your reese has. This can be a really cool effect and get much more energy out of a single patch. You could also use it in a reese riser so the warble amount increases alongside the increase in pitch. 😉🤏🏻

That’s a good point and the reason why there are so many „copy-paste“ artists in mainstream nowadays especially in EDM genre. Without music theory you watch a tutorial, copy-paste settings and you are one-hit wonder. Yeay! You sound like other without a spark of your own creativity.

I am would say I am fairly creative person, used to draw a lot when young, then building maps in Revolt (RC cars game), trackmania, warcraft III custom maps, building random vehicles/spaceships/fighters from lego or modelled them in a 3D software, then videos, trailer style videos, now boardgames but music has been something I tried about 12 years ago when I was in university and did not dive too much into it. But I always felt like music is an emotion and I am pretty good with translating a feeling to a certain medium. So I search for making a song, your video poped up. I am not much of a fan of this style, the melodic or liquid ... EDM style fits me more but this was very helpful in showcasing different layers that go into creating a song. Interesting vid, definitely some good techniques in there-though I highly encourage anyone watching to put some time into actually listening to Drum & Bass as a whole and find what's for you. It's really easy for vids like these and the recent DNB surge here in the states to make it seem homogenous and sound like fast dubstep when it is now about 30 years old, stemming from jungle. America was actually very big into DNB and had some pioneering artists in the 90s and 2000s before dubstep took hold here. Personally I love it because it's such a diverse template to create with. If you want to genuinely experience Drum & Bass and find some styles you might like, start with a youtube channel called UKF Drum & Bass-then check out a channel called Skankandbass for gritty deep tunes, Liquicity for amazing melodic tunes, Blackout Music for gnarly neurofunk and techy sounds, and lastly Liquiddnbftw for smooth liquid.. There's so many different vibes and it's been huge worldwide for ages. Funny that the US is finally catching on, and there's quite a few of us out here :) Hopefully some of you take a journey through it and find something you love!

I think it's more to do with culture and preserving the history of the genre. DnB has an incredibly strong culture and history compared to many other genres that stems heavily from its hard-fought underground beginnings, and most "old grumpy farts" aren't against new people entering the scene, they just want to prevent DnB becoming another "trend" that turns it into a coachella tribute act filled with 18yo girls who are there for the instagram post more than the music. Everyone is welcome to the scene, just take the time to learn a bit about the culture first.

EDM literally stands for electronic dance music, which is exactly what drum and bass is. EDM is an overarching category of music which includes Drum and Bass, along with anything which is electronic dance music. Not EDM is DnB, but all DnB is a form of EDM. If someone says they're into EDM nowadays they probably mean House, Big Room, Techno or Commercial Dance. EDM is not also sub-genre of itself, the confusion made by saying they "like EDM" when they actually mean the above sub-genres (House, etc) specifically. Some people may listen to the entire range of EDM sub-genres and would be correct to say they like EDM, but that's far less common. Often there's casual community hostility/distaste between EDM sub-genres (like Techno and DnB). So yes, Drum and Bass is a sub-genre of EDM. But if the only like the DnB sub-genre of EDM, it would be misleading to say you like EDM as it implies a much broader interest in many more sub-genres.

Good to see a focus on dnb. Drum and bass isnt a 'type of edm' (although for arguments sake i get what you are saying) , it was around waay before that term appeared. It first started being called jungle/hardcore and then the term dnb..all in the early-mid 90s. For some early masterpiece albums check Goldie- timeless, Adam F -Colours, 4Hero - 2 pages, Reprezent - new forms, Photek -Form and Function, Ed Rush & Optical - Wormhole, Grooverider - Mysteries of Funk, LTJ Bukem -Logical Progression...stuff on No uturn recs, Renegade Hardware, Metalheadz, Reinforced, Moving Shadow, RAM, Full Cycle, V, Good Looking etc ..25 plus years to get stuck into!

Yep. You know what's up. First ever dnb album I bought was Goldie's Timeless when it came out in the mid 90s. Aptly titled. Has withstood the test of time. If I'd have to pick just one dnb album above all, that would be the one. For anyone producing the genre, a SUB bass is a MUST.

@xoxolokomarron7860
@xoxolokomarron7860 2 года назад
Honestly you can make your mixes sound good if you balance your speakers/monitors. It's basically downloading a vast that automatically cuts the peaking frequencies that your room creates, which can make it sound like in a studio, thus audible in every speaker form. I'll let this guy talk for you tho, he explains it perfectly ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--5ChX9MwWwA.html Another advice I can give you for the technical mixing part is learning how to properly balance your sounds: -Take your time playing with the mixing Chanel on your DAW. - don't abuse certain frequencies; use eqs to separate high from mid and low frequency. Everything should have its own space. I think stranjah has a nice video about mixdown. - learn to properly group your sounds so at the end you can work with each different groups accordingly ( bass, sub, melodies, drums, Atmos, vocals, etc.) - Learn how to mix on lower volumes and after rise the volume with compressors and other sorts of volume controls. - lastly, don't over listen to your tunes. Give breathing time so you can really make up the different frequencies that might be peaking. You are welcome :).
