I'm not sure I could even afford the electricity to keep my oven on for 10hrs. 😭

This is ridiculous…how much does it cost in electricity….
@bridgetmclaughlin609

The average cost in the US to run your gas oven for ten hours is $1.14 according to a quick Google search. If anything, the oranges are what is expensive in this project. An electric oven averages .36 an hour.

@@catherineciosi147 The are other methods to dry citrus slices: in summertime you can put the slices on a rack and put them in your car for a day or two depending on your outside temperature. On a really hot day they will be done 7-10 hours and your car will smell good. Blot them with a napkin and that will speed up the drying time. If your house has the old radiator heater you can set the racks on that. I have also put the racks of citrus slices under my row cover that goes over my plants in the winter in the summer: you can set a simple plastic tent up in the summer and put them under that. I learned how to do this when I lived out in the middle of nowhere without electricity. I have so many bags of dried citrus, apple and pear slices from years of doing decorations, potpourri and food preservation. I am always looking for ideas to use them. If you have or no someone that has any of these types of fruits ask if you can have them. I am fortunate that I have apple and pear trees and I would be happy to give some away rather than have to clean the ground up what in the fall because they leave a mess. I know your comment was a year ago, however I think we will have inflation for a very long time with our current debt rate getting worse. I wanted to put this out there because they really are nice to decorate with and give as gifts. My best friend since 1976 ask me to make her a swag, the one in the video is very basic. I strung cinnamon sticks with a citrus slices in between each cinnamon stick and h.glued a bay leaf on the cinnamon stick 🍃🍊 🍃 (one bay leaf on each side of the citrus slice ) and a star anise in the center. I don’t like using jute to string with because it freys, but it does make cute little simple bows to add in. I like using green gardening wire because it’s sturdy and cheap. Fishing line and thick thread works good too. Take care and Happy New Years!

Maybe after very hot oven been used and OFF then put oranges in oven on rack and leave until oven completely cold, without opening. This works when I dry tomatoes. If orange rolled in orris powder and in a dry, warm place can last for years. As it dries, it shrinks and becomes hard as stone but the smell remains, fainter but sweet.

This is for whole oranges, studded with cloves. I do apologise.

Oh wow they look amazing but I think I will have to avoid this as it takes much longer than I was expecting and that's an awful lot of energy. Would probably be perfect for someone with a range that is already on all day.

Drying oranges is the main reason I bought a dehydrator. I set it and forget it.

@arnerood690

I think it takes 10 hours because theirs no place for the moist to go maybe put some dry rice in the fridge and put them into the oven every half hour to absorb moisture. Also don't put oranges on a wood plank

do you blot the oranges to get rid of some of the juice before you put them in the oven?

Yes, low and slow helps the oranges keep their color when dried. It’s not a quick process. The higher the temperature the more brown they are when dried.

Will these also smell good in homemade potpourri? Do I need to dry all the way for potpourri that's going on the stove? Thank you!

Yeah I don't think 3cm is what she meant. A simple close up of the cutting or the slices before dehydrating would have been helpful. They look very pretty though!

Great idea for an experiment. We usually do this in winter so sun drying wouldn't be conducive but trying it in the greenhouse might be a good idea.
