I viewed your video just in time! I received mega flowers for my birthday and now I'm drying them in the silica you recommended and I finished the first batch. Now drying a second batch. Thanks Steve, you're videos are awesome. 💚
Good luck Kia! Make sure to have ur own style! Do what u like and makes u happy! : ) All the best to u! U sound like a very ambitious young girl! Ur parents must be proud!
HI Steve, Thanks for sharing how you dry your flowers i have only been using resin for a few months so very new To the whole process I haven’t tried drying flowers but I am going to give it a go thanks for sharing your tips 👍✨Lin
I've used a product similar to yours. I really didn't care for it, as it would leave little divots in the petals/leaves. I did a search and found that regular table salt worked way better! I found out the hard way, that you should not cover it...you'll get clumps on the petals. Leaving it uncovered is best. Any attached salt, I do the same as you---using a brush to remove it. It's such a good idea, to seal your petals first, I'll have to try that. Hope you're having/had a Blessed Thanksgiving!
Great channel, Steve! I started out with this type of drying crystals and they work fine. Even better though is an almost powdered silica. It's fantastic! The flowers dry in just a couple of days and, with a few exceptions, keep their color and shape (especially important for delicate flowers). Here in the USA, they are sold in craft stores. I can send you a link if you'd be interested.
I also tried the same silica beads for drying flowers. But first I kept these flowers in book for 1-2 hour before putting in silica, also I didn't put it directly in silica bcz it changed the shape of flower so I tried to put the flower in between paper sheet and then in silica and covered it with one more layer of silica. It prevents from shrinking the leaves and keep the flower in correct shape.
Brilliant was looking at the different kinds of drying silica and did not know which to get now I will lol. Got a lovely bunch of flowers yesterday thought I would try with some of them 😊 Can you keep flowers for a while once dry? Thank you for sharing 😘❤️🌹
Hi only just found your channel and just starting crafting and trying a few Types of crafting can I ask prob a daft question can you use cat litter instead of silicone grain I Am on a small budget any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks 🌺
I'm definitely going to be trying this soon! I watch a lot of artsy mad womans videos & she has never mentioned sealing them first. She just dries them & puts them straight in. The do fade slightly but not a huge amount. Think I'll try both ways to see which I like better. Thanks for the video 😊
Hi Steve if you don'y hear much from me I had to get all my upper teeth pulled and just got home and going to be resting a lot next few days but love idea of using dry flowers in resin.
Neither did I!!! I got some flowers from a friend as a surprise but i don’t want to throw them away once they get old and i want to preserve them in resin! I started to dry them with silica and they’ve come out nice! Had i not known about sealing them first, this wouldn’t of turned out right! Thank you!
I wish we had more flowers in our garden after watching this video 💖. I tried looking for the silica - where do you buy yours from please? I've found some online but it seems 'steep' in price. I use acrylic gloss medium to seal my woodgrain ink - stops the colours bleeding when I coat with resin - have you tried it to seal flowers? I love the stir stick. I've just bought a large pack of jumbo lollipop sticks, but in future - I'm going to buy a thin silicone spatula / palette knife instead x
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Thanks, I couldn't see it, but I've ordered a different brand from Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I've started drying my first set of flowers. Excited to see how they turn out, a lot of trial and error - but I'll get the hang of it at some point 🤞 x
Steve, where do you buy your silica crystals from pose - just had a look on amazon for the one you're using, and it was like £13 , but them £12.98 postage o n top! thank you
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts hiya I'm looking to purchase the silica granules this link what size container would this fill. Not sure how much I will need
I'm fairly sure that would work. You could try it with some random yard leaves. I dried some leaves from a bush with silica crystal cat litter & it worked just fine.
Silica SAND is much better to use, it doesn't distort the shape of the petals/leaves. But what's even a better and less expensive choice...is plain table salt! It won't distort the shapes, it retains its color and is waaaaaay cheaper! Just don't cover it or you'll get lumps. Wipe any excess off with a brush. Keep in mind, that the less humidity there is, the sooner your items will dry out. Happy Crafting!
When drying flowers, dark colours will get darker, but most light colours will get lighter. This is my favourite way to dry flowers. I have never sealed flowers before adding them into the resin and never had a problem. The resin will only affect the colour if the flowers aren't totally dry.
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts I'd be really interested in watching that. I've never used polyester resin, I'd like to see how that works with flowers too
yes, you can dry them in catlitter, put a layer in a glass container (not in plastic! the container will break!) put the flowers in it, cover them with a layer of catlitter and put it all in the microwave for 3 minutes and ready!
