- Duck first, then gybe after.
- Flat stable board when the duck happens, not carving, standing in a neutrally balanced position.
- Once you catch the sail get forward on the boom.
- Change your feet late in the manoeuvre.
How to get planing and exit gybes on the plane- it's the same thing! • How to get planing and...

Hi Cookie, great video! I have been learning duck gybe, and get the sail ripped from me after the flip. Now I know I am either ducking too late, or bearing away too much. very useful tips! i found your channel a couple of months ago and became hooked, the ride along concept is really good to hear and watch things happening at the same time! Kudos to you, you will get copied by everyone else in no time!

Man, that's really great! I haven't messed around with duck jibes in a while but this inspires me to give them another go! For me what works with duck jibing is to do as you say: duck the sail early. I try to do it while there's still pressure in the sail, but not too early like some of your students in the video. I try to wait until just before I get to the point in the jibe where I'm going dead downwind very fast, matching the speed of the wind. Having some pressure in the sail helps the mast swing around the front, and if you wait until just before the dead downwind point, the sail will kind of "backwind" itself back up into your hands. That is, if you do it right, which I don't always do.

Go for it! I haven't windsurfed in ages (switched to the 'dark side') but wish I'd had these videos (even youtube) when I learned. I'm trying a hand at wind-foiling and Cookie's got some good vids on that too, but back when I started making duck jibes I felt like king of the world! Keep at it and you will too - good luck!

@segelsegler35
@segelsegler35 2 года назад
Very good explained. I think a Duck Gybe is basically easier than other varaints due to its modular composition, as you mentioned. The speed at the entrance can be scary, especially overpowered. What helped me most: 1. Pressure on the front foot and look at the center of the circle you are drawing - not at your feet (as with every other gybe), 2. Shift the sail at broad reach, 3. Stay in the front footstrap at least until new broad reach (you can't stay in it too long), 4. NEVER lean back. Meanwhile, I prefer the Duck Gybe in everything (even in wavesailing) but very choppy conditions. Cheers, Claus.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting. One question…. “Look at the centre of the gybe not at your feet ***like you would with other gybes”…. ….Never look at your feet in any gybe?! I love a duck too- but maybe this is why you prefer not so much more- because you’re look at your feet in the other ones?!
@segelsegler35
@segelsegler35 2 года назад
@@Cookiesports Sorry - expressed wrongly. I meant: no matter which gybe, you should look at the center of the gybe, not at your feet or board.

Fantastic video as always, great visuals, keeping it simple, very nice, it makes it easier to formulate the technique in my mind. I'm consistently almost planing out of my carve gybes now so seems like it might be nice to give this a shot today, I'm about to head out we have 20-25knots today, perfect!! Its actually really helpful to see the "fails", when you see the perfect move all the time its not always easy to work out what you're doing wrong, so yeah, the fails are very helpful.

Great video , one of my favoriete moves, only can do it one way. Try it on land will surely help me do do it both ways. Just one question: could you do a video on the duck jibe “Robby Naish style” ? Great video, but can you clarify what position the board should be in, relative to the wind, when you duck the sail? Is it just before the board is straight downwind? How much before? I think this is a critical point that needs more emphasis. It seems that most people duck too late rather than too early, but where's the sweet spot? Also, as sail size increases, duckability decreases, right? Is it feasible to duck a 7.5? Thanks!
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
It’s not a specific point of sail as such- hence the fault finding bit. However, it can be narrowed to between a broad reach and a run! Sucking on 7.5m and larger is definitely possible- but much harder. Practice loads on the land! 👍👍

Once again spot on, sir! One question on rig flip timing, is it that you duck as soon as the rig starts to feel light? Will be seeing you next week so hoping to have nailed this move by the time I leave.
@Cookiesports
@Cookiesports 3 года назад
If you can get the rig to feel light then great. I didn't mention in this video as a lot of the time people don't feel it go light... until often it's too late and they're too far round the gybe! See you next week!
