This was amazing and just what I needed, thank you! I was worried my cotton/poly blend (65-35) wouldn't take with the Rit dye I was using. Turns out, it should just be a bit less saturated and a brighter green. That's actually exactly what I want anyway!
I would love to see someone finally teach us how to dye lace our skin tone. Also feature how to achieve darker skin toned lace. I'll try this method though.
This method is going to be best! I will look into this for you, but my guess would be to get two colors that most closely match your skin tone (Here is a link- www.onlinefabricstore.net/product-group-fabric-treatments.aspx?product=fabric-dyes&product_sub_group=liquid-fabric-dye&color=brown,tan) (Use Dyemore if the material is polyester, nylon or acrylic and use all purpose for natural fiber materials) and using this technique, add them to the water and allow the lace to dry before dumping the dye bath in case you want to add more color. You can always add color if need be and just allow the fabric to sit for longer in the bath. Dying is an experiment every time so it is hard to say for sure what will work for you but if you have any more questions, let me know!
thank you for the tip for getting saturated colors. i just dyed some shirts right now and they are too light. so im dying them a second time with double the dye. thank god i found this video.
Love this video! To the point and clear. I have a light blue sweatshirt that I’d love to give a purple tint, I wonder if a small amount of purple dye would work
OnlineFabricStore.net it’s really cheap and from China, probably polyester. But I only want a small change, it doesn’t have to be vibrant, just want to push the hue from (light to mid ombre) blue to a purple/blue
@@cl22396 If it is polyester you are going to want to use Rit DyeMore, you can find it here! www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-dyemore-liquid-synthetic-fiber-dye-royal-purple-.htm Good luck with your sweatshirt! Dying clothes is so fun because you get different results every time. If it's the ombre look you are going for though check out our video on an ombre dip dying technique!!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9PpIkXBpgMo.html
Quick question for You. I’m wanting to know which DYE to use for Fruit Of The Loom T-Shirts, Sweatpants, and Sweatshirt’s???? I’m wanting to purchase 3 sets of Sweatpant’s and Sweatshirt’s to DYE Purple, Lemon Yellow, and True Green. So I’m hearing You saying that RIT DYE won’t work for these fabrics??? Plus I’m to use BOTH Salt and Vinegar to DYE Clothes??? I went on RIT’s website and it doesn’t mention salt or vinegar.
I used Synthetic dye on dress Whenit dried…there were several splotches of deeper colour on the front Not sure what happened..followed instructions explicitly. Help!
Hi fantastic video, thank you. I’m a newbie to junk journaling and would like to dye sari silk ribbon ...do I add vinegar , and is the hot water ok to do that ? also I’ll be doing smaller amounts in different colours.... do you know how much I should use for smaller amounts ?
What did you say that silk wouldn't dye into red or purple? I tried stretchy silk with deaignated dye into pink and it didn't work!? What do you suggest? Thank you
it’s really interesting that the 100% polyester changes colour because the things i’ve read say it doesn’t! i’m looking to dye an 100% polyester dress but only want there to be a slight change in colour, would you recommend the all purpose dye for that since the colour change is minimal?
Did you find your answer for this? I'm getting ready to dye some polyester knit ponte which is regular purple, to a more muted, darker purple. I'm wondering if i could put just a touch of black in some water to do that?
O.k. I have to ask which do y'all think is best...rite dye or tulip dye. I have tried tulip dye a couple of times and it does pretty good. I havent used rite dye in years, but I might just compare.
you could dye in the tub, and it shouldn't dye it (if there is a little leftover residue it can usually be cleaned right out especially if you use bleach) but my preferred method of dying right now is in the washing machine. If you have access to a machine, I would recommend using that!!
I would like to dye a dress that has a top layer of black lace. I am trying to dye the underneath layer a nude color (it is currently white). Can I dye the black lace fabric in the same camel dye, without affecting the black?
You could use rit color remover (www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm) and then dye it. But I will caution, wool likes to shrink when you put it in hot water so while it would work making it purple, you may shrink the coat a lot in the process.
Is it possible to do tie dye without bleeding with Rit? How can I keep indigo and red dyes from bleeding? I am really struggling to perfect my technique with these two colors as a combination for patriotic stuff. I am using Rit dyes and soaked them in soda ash prior for 25 minutes before dying and left them to sit in their bags for 48 hours. I rinsed all four shirts totally clear individually and I added them to a bucket with 1 cup of salt, 2 cups of white vinegar, and three gallons of water to set together after they had been rinsed. I then put them in the washer together since they were all the same exact colors and ran it on cold water delicate cycle with a low spin, and I ran it three times. The first time the Indigo and red bled together making the white areas light lavender. The second time the red is the one that bled with a pink color in the areas that are supposed to be white. What am I doing wrong? I have been reading that Indigo and Red dyes can be the tricker colors to set. I am a big fan of your RU-vid channel and wanted to see if you would do a video about it, or perhaps respond with some tips. Also, how can I fix items that have bled? Thank you.
Red is definitely a tricky color to tie dye with because it can easily go pink. It's hard to avoid, but I'd suggest using a red that is more toward the orange side of red than the burgundy/purple side of red. The color will inevitably bleed into the white but a more orange-y red will read more like a faded red and less pink. So with the Rit colors, Scarlet would be better than Cherry or Wine. As far as the blue and red bleeding together, keeping the colors further apart and dyeing it on a cooling rack or something that lets the excess dye drain would help. While soda ash works to set other dyes, it doesn’t help with Rit dye. We highly suggest using Rit Color Fixative after dyeing but before rinsing out the dye. You can spray it directly on the fabric before untying it. Let it sit for at least 20 minutes. I hope those tips are helpful - good luck!
I have a white shirt that is 100% cotton and white shorts that are 97% cotton and 3% spandex that I want to be thr exact same hue of purple. Would that work? It looks like from the video it would.
Yes, you never really know for certain, but I would expect them to dye the same. Sometimes, it's not just the content but the thickness and weave can make a difference, so it's always a bit of an experiment!
30 minutes would probably be fine but leaving it in longer wouldn't hurt since you want a dark teal, so I'd say 45 minutes should do it. It will look very dark when you take it out but will lighten a bit when the dye is washed out. Good luck!
Ugh! I got an unknown stain on a red cotton dress. I've tried everything to get it out, but it is still there. The dress is a bright red. Can I redye it with Rit red dye? Will that hide the stain?
That sucks! Unless you dye it a darker color, you would probably still be able to see it unfortunately. Maybe if you use Rit Color Remover and then dye it red again after that, but it's hard to know how the stain will react to the Color Remover. Good luck!
@@onlinefabricstore I thought about that too. I read another solution somewhere. I got cute little red heart appliques and hid the stain with that. Put it in a pattern. Looks super cute now. It was a casual Henley style dress, but I love it. The stain looks like I dripped something on it. Probably red wine. I put a little red heart (that come in two small sizes) and put one on each drop mark, alternating the size. It did the trick. Thanks for your help.
Hi! I have started to color some fabric (100% wool) but the water have been around 40-50 degrees because wool doesn’t like heat. However the red became light and pink and the turquoise blue became too light too. My question is how can I make them brighter? I want a strong red and a strong blue. Is the water not worm enough? How many times can I dye the fabric? If I continue to dye will the color be brighter? Also this was not with Rit but Dylon because that was in the store. (Tulp Red and Bahamas blue) Understand that you can’t talk for these colors but the behavior of the wool is still remain! I don’t know how to handle it! Thank you!
Dylon will dye wool but to a lighter shade than other fabrics like cotton. You can try dyeing it again using more dye but it may not get darker. Dylon and Rit are different types of dye so they won't have the same results. We got good results on wool with Rit All-Purpose Dye, although we were using hot water so it likely won't work as well with cold water. Good luck!
Sorry it didn't turn out as expected! You should be able to use a mild detergent in the first wash. You can try dyeing it again for longer and make sure the fabric can move freely while dyeing and use the fixative if you didn't before. Dyeing can sometimes be finicky even if you do everything right!
Let's say I have an outfit that I wanted to dye from a bright orange to either a dark brown a dark maroon, what would be the best option to do so without ruining the clothing?
You should be able to do that with Rit Dye! What is the outfit made out of? You are going to want to use Rit All Purpose Dye on cotton, wool, silk, nylon and rayon fabrics, or use Dye More on polyester, acrylic and acetate
How about dry dying? I can not remove the fabric from the curule chair, it is a white denim type soft fabric. Can I just paint the dye on the fabric in place?
We're not aware of any dye that could be used on upholstered furniture. The problem is it really needs to be rinsed after dyeing to remove extra dye or else the dye may come off on clothes when the chair is sat on. There are some paints that may work, like these vinyl and fabric Rust-Oleum spray paints: www.onlinefabricstore.net/brand-rust-oleum.aspx?product_group=paint&product=spray-paint&product_sub_group=fabric-and-vinyl-spray-paint
You should probably use dye more. You are going to need incredibly hot water and a very saturated dye bath. Here's a link to our selection of Rit Dye More products - www.onlinefabricstore.net/hsearchresult.aspx?keyword=dye%20more
I want to dye a pinky burgundy upholstered chair to TEAL. I think the fabric is poly but could be cotton rayon??? Wondering if I should choose a non teal colour, more green? but maybe that would turn the chair purple? any advice on dying over deep pink and how it will take colour. Have a little fabric under neath the seat that I can test on. Thanks. Good video!
So I would say it is going to be very hard to dye a deep pink to a teal color unless you are able to remove some of the color before hand. Here is what I would suggest. Take a little scrap piece and see if Color Remover (www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm) works. Color remover does not work on polyester, acetate, or acrylic, so that may pose a problem. If it does, you can use it on all of your fabric and then just dye the fabric to the teal color you are wanting. If it does not, I don't think you would be able to get a deep pink to teal, it would probably turn purple no matter what you try.. Sorry, I wish I could help more. Once you try out the scrap and see the results you can email me at help@onlinefabricstore.net (Just say you are looking to speak with Alyssa) and I can help you come up with a better plan but the main question you need to solve is if the color remover works on that material.
OnlineFabricStore.net one more question, haven’t bought the color remover yet, and don’t see any instructions online, so....do I just paint on the color remover and then hose it off like in the upholstery dying instructions?
@@CAREBEARY777 No.. So you are going to need to be able to boil the fabric in a pot or put it through a really hot cycle in the washing machine to get the color out and also to dye it. Painting on Rit Dye will not work. You need to be able to submerge it in a very hot dye and water bath.
New to this, but I have a question, I have a blue uniform shirt, polyester & cotton, that I need to be a few shades darker blue. Would I use a navy blue or black?? I’m so confused!
I’m trying to dye a dress that is 65% rayon, 30% nylon and 5% spandex. If I want it to be a lilac purple, do you suggest mixing multiple dyes to create the color or just not putting as much dye in the mixture to get a lighter purple
Yes, for light colors you should not put in as much dye. Here's color formulas that should be helpful to you: www.ritdye.com/color-formulas/?type=197&hue=209
You are going to need to be able to fully immerse the fabric, and you can do that in the washer (or a larger container if you have it.) So if it fits, you can dye.
We don't, but the washing machine method is best for large batches. You can find Rit's instructions here: www.ritdye.com/techniques/the-basics/washing-machine-top-loader/ www.ritdye.com/techniques/the-basics/washing-machine-front-loader/
I’m trying to dye a baby blue doll dress to a navy blue, the sleeves & top of the dress are mesh but the rest looks to be a shiny faux silk type material, what do you recommend? Thanks!
Since it's probably polyester, you'll want to use Rit DyeMore Synthetic Fiber Dye instead of Rit All-Purpose. We have a video for DyeMore too: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/rit-dyemore-synthetic-fiber-dye/
Hi! I am going to be dying 3 large pieces of canvas (painters canvas-each one is 12X15') do you have any suggestions on what the best way to dye these would be? They are going to be used as a back drop on a stage so it is very important that all 3 look exactly the same. If I were to do them in a large tub.. what is the best way to dump the water? Im not sure my neighbors would appreciate me dying our gutters blue... Thank you!!
A large tub or using the washing machine method would be the best options. With so much fabric, it may be hard to dye it evenly. The fabric needs lots of room to move around in the dye bath so the dye can get to all the parts evenly. Make sure to move it around the entire time it's dyeing. The dye is non-toxic, so it can be dumped down a drain. Here's Rit's instructions for the washing machine method (select washing machine on this page): www.ritdye.com/instructions/using-rit-all-purpose-dye/ Good luck!
We'd suggest using Rit Color Remover (www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm) first to remove as much as the existing dye as possible. Then you should be able to dye it a royal blue with Rit All-Purpose Dye.
OnlineFabricStore.net thank you for your reply. Didn't realise you had a colour remover as well. 😃 I just tried to visit your link but it says "We’re sorry, the page you requested has an error." 🙁
You would need to use dye for synthetic material but very hot water is required and this may damage the faux suede. We suggest testing it on a small piece of your fabric first because different faux suedes react differently. You can find the tutorial for the synthetic dye here: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/rit-dyemore-synthetic-fiber-dye/
If you want to heat it on the stove throughout the dyeing process, stainless steel is best. If you heat water and then pour it into a different container for dyeing, you can use glass, which won't stain. Plastic will probably stain, but if you have a designated dyeing container that you don't mind getting stained, that's fine too.
It depends how dark of a color you want it to be. The All-Purpose should be fine for most colors since the poly is only 20% (plus the All-Purpose has more colors available), but the DyeMore may be better for darker colors.
Im planning to dye a light blue denim jeans into a deeper shade of blue,i want to maintain the color of the pocket lining which is white...is it possible?
So i wanna dye a shirt but it has different colors and i wanna make it all dark green, so will the color be all the same at the end or will it end up darker in some areas ( because of the different colors it already has) ?
We suggest first using Rit Color Remover (www.onlinefabricstore.net/rit-color-remover-powder-.htm), which will remove most or all of the color without damaging the fabric like bleach can. Then when you dye it, it should be even.
It will be fine. The vinegar and salt help open up the fibers to receive the dye, so it does help give you an overall even and saturated color, but if you like the way it came out then its all good!
It did slightly but we would definitely recommend Rit DyeMore for polyester instead of Rit All-Purpose: www.onlinefabricstore.net/makersmill/rit-dyemore-synthetic-fiber-dye/
OnlineFabricStore.net thanks for reply, yeah I have a Gore-Tex jacket that’s white and I can’t keep it clean so might try getting a black dye and see if it will turn it light grey with how water, don’t want to boil it and ruin goretex
It depends on the shade orange and purple you are working with, you might end up with brown or purple. Its always worth a shot, if you have a scrap piece of the fabric I would recommend testing it out.
Dyeing it red would likely make it purple (that leans more to a wine color) If your end goal is purple, I would use purple dye with maybe a hint of red to offset the blue a little bit. If you just use purple, it will lean more towards a blueish purple.
