I pinned this comment because I 100% overlooked this as a factor as to why it didn't work. Im not sure if other manufactures use natural fabrics and im not even sure if this carpet inst natural but hopefully this helps other people from running into the same issue I did. I appreciate it!
Rit does make a dye for synthetic materials it requires using boiling water. From their website. *Important Note: Due to the complexity of dyeing synthetics, you must use Rit DyeMore with the stovetop method to maintain an almost boiling temperature for the duration of your dyeing.
@@ComicbookGuy70 you need to soak the carpet in a trash can full of boiled rit dye for about a week and then dry and wash all the dye out and it will be ink black until the end of time.
@@ComicbookGuy70 Also from their website "Add Salt or Vinegar (If Dyeing Cotton, Linen, Silk, Wool, Nylon Rayon and Ramie). To enhance the color: (1) add 1 cup of salt when dyeing fabrics containing cotton, rayon, ramie or linen; (2) add 1 cup of vinegar when dyeing fabrics containing nylon, silk or wool."
It failed because you used room temperature water. RIT dye is heat activated, and you should get the water as hot as possible. The dye didn't activate in your case and was just sitting on the surface. You should also add table salt to it to get the dye to activate easier in the BOILING HOT water, and attach to/soak into, the carpet fibers.
I my case i was very successful using the dye, but i did my 1986 Caprice floor carpet during middle of summer on my open driveway where temps are usually 105F-115F.😊
Thanks for the video. I wouldn't have never used RIT . I used Dupli- color vinyl and fabric paint, to change the carpet color from grey to Red , in my ' 90 Corvette Convertible and it looks awesome. I highly recommend Dupli-Color vinyl and fabric paint.
We used Dupli in the dealerships on small areas/parts. For whole carpets, especially in bigger vehicles it was Americolor products 100% of the time. Their products are pricier than Dupli but the Americolor products are worth it.
I just got done doing my 79 corvette and can tell you its true. i dye the carpet about 2 weeks ago and dried it on the sun and then under the constant ceiling fan for the remainder time. and after i installed it 2 days ago, is now sweating. and i have no idea how to stop it. so, yes, do not use rite for car carpet, use the spray can he has. i used it for the rest of the car and for some reason not for the rug. but we do and we learn, anyways...good luck man!
The correct product to dye a carpet is RIT Synthetic. This is the one to dye polyester, nylon, and acrylic. Additionally, it requires at least four paint coats to recover the same color; you are changing the color, so it needs more paint coats.
Def a helpful video. Looking to dye my E30’s dark blue carpet to black. Good to hear the carpet isn’t all plastic feeling afterwards. I was planning to tan swap the interior since that’s what I have but found some black sport seats. So might just dye the rest of the interior black too.
I did my carpet on my truck the same way you’re doing it with that dye. Spraying it with the bottle it came out fine. Just let it sit out in the sun for a while and spray some more scrub like you were doing baking Son. No tiger stripes lol i’ll tell you one thing spray it with the spray cans, a lot easier, and it save time.
I’m pretty sure it’s because you are going over beige why it has a green Hue. If this was on gray or to refresh black carpet I think it would have been fine.
It would have been cheaper to get replacement carper at 12-15$ a can and labor. I did a car carpet just like you and at the end paint coat about 150$ and my labor it would have been cheaper for my client and less trouble for me
I just watched this went to Walmart got right stuff for 4.78. Went home boiled water added a pinch of soap and dye did carpet for my car hung it to dry for a day It is perfect

doesn’t seem too different from the e36/e39 carpets i’ve done, 96 gallon bin gets the trick done. the hard part is finding something to do with the 800lbs of ink water 😂
From what I remember the directions only say hot water. Nothing else. Also apparently they have a natural fabric dye (what I used) and a synthetics dye (what I should have used)
Bruuuhhh! I just saw your video lol. You did boil the water which will help. If you read some of the comments on my video someone commented that our carpets are synthetic which requires a different rit dye… hopefully your carpet doesn’t bleed out. If it does hopefully you can clean it out.
LOL thats crazy!! yeah i washed them and they all turned grey and green so it sucks but once i get the spray i think it will work out i just wish i knew before i did all of it !!!@@zackellis23
Haha thanks man! Yea I was hurt. Maybe im a dummy and messed it up but it’s a pretty simple process. The end result came out great and I appreciate you watching! I love my Grom but trying to sell it lol
