How to Easily Become a Sterile Processing Technician [WITHOUT SCHOOL]

I’m a CRCST from Michigan. If anyone has to be certified or looking to be certified. I went to Ashworth College in Georgia. This is a self-taught course, and it gives you up to a year to finish everything. They also pay for your state exam. And you can also do your clinical at a local hospital. I got paid to do my clinical; it is different for everyone. Also, CRCST certification is certified in all 50 states!

Soo I am a SPD educator, specifically CBSPD, I teach at one of these "not legit" schools. You have put out so much mis-information that it can easily get people wasting their time. I guess I can speak only for California but there are NOT any hospitals that will take in volunteers or externs WITHOUT their certification from one of the boards or a Certificate of Completion from a school. Now, these schools you speak of, they are people who are just teaching the material to students--basically these are PREPARATORY COURSES not schools. I have been teaching since 2010 and I have a 99% passing rate for CBSPD exam takers. SOOO TAKING A CLASS WORKS AND IS WORTH IT!!! Id like to add that I have had SOOOOOO many students who have been SPD techs for 10+ years and have failed their CBSPD exam multiple times and are now taking a course because they CANT pass the CBSPD exam. These Techs were TRAINED into the position and do not know the "book" so continue to fail their test. Also, another misconception you have put out is that externship or volunteering is needed/required in order to get hired. That is not true and honestly can easily discourage someone who is trying to find a job without experience. Someone taking and passing a COURSE is their experience. On job listings they say 1yr experience and/or certification--- and that is because there are people who have been doing this job for 10, 15, 20 years where they were TRAINED into this position meaning that they used to work in cafeteria, housekeeping or just got hired into the position-- THEY ARE NOT CERTIFIED. So when these people who ONLY have their experience to offer try to find a job they fall under the "1 year experience" qualifications req. Where as people who have a certification from a board and TOOK a class THAT right there is their experience. This is knowledge straight from hiring department managers who I have become friends with over the years. Also, Many of these places who offer the SPD course CANNOT put 10-15 students at hospital for externship. Hospital will take 1-2 students each time so yes people will be waiting 1-2 years to get into an externship. AND AGAIN that is because it is not REQUIRED to get hired. I encourage my students to skip the externship and not work for free and look for a job right away. Students have ALWAYS found jobs without externships and have done AMAZING in life as a SPD tech. Finding a job with any career can be a challenge. People who have college degrees struggle to find a job, and there are others who find a job within a week of job hunting. It falls on the person--their resume, their personality, willingness to commute etc.

I'm an Instructor at one of those "not legit" schools. And, Idk where you are, but in CA, being certified is very helpful! The Externship is not required, but does give one an added advantage! I'm sorry you evidently had an unsatisfactory experience... But not everyone does! It's not different, by the way, as to how long your cert is good.

I just wanted to share with you that i just received my job offer for Sterile Processing! You helped me in a million ways to prepare for my new career!

The technical college in my city offers a 16 week program for $200. It's all online and only meet two times during the whole curriculum. Nothing is hiring in my area without having at least that. They do give you 6-12 to pass the exam. So, I'll have a certificate, but still need the exam to keep the job. Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm excited but nervous.

I know the temp agency worked in your case but i would never recommend temp agency to anyone unless they are ok with not being hired on fully because that is a possibility

Anyone from Houston? Did you go to school? If not, what hospitals were open to training you for the 400 hours?

I have been doing my research for this program upon doing so, since I am unfamiliarized and learning about this programs certifications I got confused on the different types of tests there are, these are the ones that got me confused the IAHCSMM AND CVSPD as you mentioned in this video but then there is ALSO CRCST. Do both of these programs ( IAHCSMM AND CBSPD) fall under a CRCST certification? I’m a little confused can someone clarify this for me please. Like does taking the CBSPD certification automatically get you the CRCST? Thank you in advance

What city do you work in? That’s a high salary for only 3 years (at least in San Diego).

Is it possible to get this job w/o certification? Many, many years ago I did work in a primate lab and did sterilization, packing, anything my supervisor needed. I also scrubbed in for surgery. Then I was a dental assistant for about 10 years (lots of sterilization) before I left the medical field. I want to go back to it because I want to work at the VA in Tampa.

Thanks for the informational video. I’ve worked in two different hospitals over a 4 year period as support staff and am interested in CSPD. I recommend anyone interested in healthcare to get an entry level job in the hospital as it’s easier to get a job if you’re already “in”. I got the books online and will apply within the year. I support and agree with this video..I'm a CRCST here in New york and was certified started working a year ago. This job or career for me is easy money 💰.Since the facility I'm working with right now has a lot of cases so we work extra o.t. hours.So,I'm earning 6k to 7k a month..

It’s most excellent that this job became everything you wanted it to be and you’re still relatively young. But after accepting a position in the field, red flags came up that people should know before going into this. Low pay ($15) in Michigan. Described as “thankless” stressful and worst of all “dead end”. Do your research before jumping in.

Working sterile processing at a hospital right now, worked a year and a half an I would like to get certified and start traveling and making more money, any websites where I could study for the tests ?

Around here you have to go to school to get a job. Our local community college offers the class. You can also go to Purdue online It's less than $500 and is completely online. They cannot help with the 400 hours. They suggested the local IAHCSMM chapter to help. No hospital around here has any volunteering for this. Right now volunteering at all is very difficult. (hopefully that will change once people can get the vaccine). Agree do not get involved in any for profit school.

Do you know what the typical work week/hours are for an SPD? Like is it a normal 9-5 or can you do three day 12 hour shifts kinda thing.

In Florida sterile processing tech pay start is 15 or 16 an hour. That’s only about 32k a year.
