Thank you so much! Using fencing wire was a great cost saving solution for building these new deck railings. My new deck looks brand new and no longer dated.

We own a construction company and do this everyday. You all did a great job. It's a nice touch and turns a boring porch into a nice little play area for small pups. I like it.

Great video. I love getting ideas about how to make things that are good but inexpensive. I was looking for ideas for my daughter who is buying a house with a deck similar to yours and they want to see the view through it but don’t want to break the bank. They also have a toddler that they don’t want to do a header off of it. I don’t think we have that type of chicken wire here, but it gave me ideas to price out for her. I’ll subscribe. From Canada

if you place 2 frames together then staple to on end the lift the second panels end up on a block and staple it, then take the block out, then push that end down and it will stretch the fencing tight so you can staple the rest. it will take out the wave and will not have any give to the fence after that.

This method would probably not pass code a kid could fall threw it seeing it held on with staples. It's a good idea and looks nice
@Toolboxdiva
@Toolboxdiva 5 лет назад
Thank you but this does and did pass code. My deck is ground level and doesn't actually require railings. I stated this many times in my tutorial. If you were to do this with an above ground deck actual Hogwire is required or a different design altogether.

Good job. Most people won't know how to stretch wire so here are 2 solutions. 1. The easier of the 2 is done after the panel is completed. Using a set of square nose pliers, pick a vertical.section of the wire close to either side. Grab the horizontal wire in that vertical section and gently twist to create a small "z" or controlled kink in that wire. You will immediately see the tension increase. Do this on every horizontal wire in that vertical section. Check you're overall tension. If needed, go.the opposite side of the panel and repeat the process. DO NOT over tighten as this may cause your wire to pull loose or deform the shape of the panel. 2. With your panel on the ground flat. Make the wire panel about 6 inches longer than needed. Pull it tight then attach a 2 x 4 to the longer side. Be sure to attach the 2x4 about 1/2-1 inch shorter than the end.of the existing frame. When you rotate the 2x4 back and get it over the edge of the frame, you can use leverage to push the 2x4 down and stretch the wire taught. Secure where needed on panel, cut off excess and done.

How would the design or materials change for a deck that is 48" above the ground?
@Toolboxdiva
@Toolboxdiva 3 года назад
You would need a permit to start. And you can't use poultry fencing. You would have to use hog wire. Also the way I attached the railing would not work for an above ground deck. You would have to check with your municipality's codes but it changes a good bit.

Rather than stapling the fencing to the frame and then covering with a piece of wood, you can use a dado or router to cut a slot in the frame to hold the edges of the fencing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x0iMHQVzJvQ.html Another variation of the deck railing using a continuous top hand rail. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IbQdzkZtBmI.html

Interesting video. Doesn’t make for a very secure railing but it still is a good looking railing. This would be a good alternative for someone who didn’t have children or dogs. Also, you should research what a Diva really is, there’s nothing good about it. prince.org/msg/105/412679

This safety guard rail is not even close to meeting IRC building code. A deck this low to the ground does not require a railing , but if one is built on it , it still needs to meet code. Notching rail posts is absolutely forbidden in the new code.

Sooooooo you live in that big house….. and you can’t afford $200 in hog paneling?!?….. and you settle for something that looks BAD….. dents kinks and bends in that paneling looks horrible, spend the extra $200 and go for the actual look you want then just settling for cheap material that won’t last
