How to Easily Connect Up to 8 Monitors to a Windows Computer

One extra screen is nice, two is better, but eight? Is that even possible? We'll show you how to use relatively inexpensive video adapters to connect eight extra monitors to your Windows computer-each operating in extended mode. And if eight monitors feels like a few too many, the same process works for adding seven or fewer.
Branch out with the UGA-HDMI-2S: amzn.to/3v4UK4d
Pick up a UGA-HDMI-S: amzn.to/3rMNTux

The components used in this video can be found linked in the description. Additionally, we have a "where to buy" section on our website here: plugable.com/pages/where-to-buy That said, this video functions as a sort of proof of concept. We typically don't recommend this many displays on any operating system as it will be resource intensive and may not function well on some systems.

When I've tried adding 2 monitors to my laptop, the first works ok using the HDMI port; the second I have going thru a USB-HDMI splitter. One performance problem I've seen in that using it (esp with HDMI(native) + 2 HDMI on the splitter) is it kicks off something called 'Windows Driver Foundation User-mode Driver Framework Host Process. That process is kind of a hog, and messes with other processes. For example, using HDMI + 2 HDMI on the splitter makes audio and midi unusable due to interruptions. QUESTION: Is Windows Driver Foundation a factor with the Plugable devices? Is there a performance hit or process interruptions?

Wow, super impressed. This is exactly what I have been needing. I have a usb-c hub (it has 3 hdmi ports) which is supprting 3 external monitors, plus the internal monitor of my laptop. I just need to add one more to have 4 external monitors, plus the laptop screen. the three external montiors are using HDMI. Can I use one of your adapters to add one more monitor? I was reading some reviews on amazon and why are some buyers saying that after downloading a driver the device then starts to record your screen? I find that unlikely but that is what is being claimed. Not this particular item, it is the Plugable 4 HDMI Multi Monitor Adapter, USB 3.0 or USB C to HDMI Adapter, Compatible with Windows and Mac, Quad Adapter Supports 1920x1080@60Hz - this is the item I think I need to add my 4 monitors successfully.

Hello and thanks for asking! Yes you can! Our UGA-HDMI-S adds one additional HDMI display that can run at 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz. --> plugable.com/products/uga-hdmi-s Please note that the Silicon Motion driver is required to use this adapter and you can download it from here --> plugable.com/pages/siliconmotion If you are using macOS the 'Screen Recording' permission is required. With the UGA-HDMI-S there is one additional virtual display created, and then the InstantView software 'records' that display to rendering it externally on your monitor. There is no actual recording or saving of information occurring, just this 'mirroring' of the virtual display to your physical monitor. Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance. @Plugable
@Plugable Год назад
Thanks for asking! With a modern Windows laptop the configuration shared in this video should work well. This would be an 11th or 12th Generation Intel. The adapters shown in this video should be able to power your 8 TV's however please note that these adapters are limited to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. If your TV's are 4K displays, I would also recommend taking a look at our USBC-6950U which can run 2 displays up to 4K 60Hz ( plugable.com/products/usbc-6950u ). This is also a software driven graphical solution and should work well. Both the USBC-6950U and UGA-HDMI-2S ( plugable.com/products/uga-hdmi-2s ) use software to render your external display, and would not benefit from a more expensive GPU option. This is why we recommend a higher end CPU for environments such as you are describing. Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance! Sean // Plugable.com/Support

Hello and thanks for asking! While the adapters in this video (as well as our USBC-768H4, the 4 display version) could work in your setup, we would caution against using video on each display. The adapters in this video use a software driver to render your external displays, and this can quickly result in a decrease in overall performance. If you wish to use the adapters to add additional screens for more passive tasks, such as reading stream chat or similar this configuration should work well for you! @Plugable
@Plugable Год назад
Thanks for asking! There can be some latency or 'lag' involved when streaming video over a USB adapter, however this is based on available system resources. @Plugable
@Plugable 2 месяца назад
Yes, these are all 1920 x 1080 monitors, as this is the maximum resolution these adapters can support. The more displays you add, the more GPU and CPU processing power is required, so it is recommended that you have a modern host laptop or PC. A discrete GPU would be helpful as well, but results may vary depending on the tasks being done.

Hi there. Im setting up 2 monitors with my Lenovo Ideapad 3, RYZEN 5..and it wont work with type c multi- daptors, it only works if I plug one of my external monitors directly to the HDMI port. Ive use converter on my type C to HDMI but it still wont detect it. What do I need to do that have my laptop extend to another 2 external monitor?
@Plugable
@Plugable Год назад
Hello Vladamir, thanks for reaching out. This is likely due to unsupported video via USB-C which is common in Ryzen systems. To achieve two displays, you'll need a USB 3.0 based device such as our UGA-HDMI-2S, or USBC-6950U, or a UD-3900Z (docking station). The devices mentioned range from 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz to 4K @ 60Hz.

@Plugable
@Plugable 2 года назад
Hi Chad, thank you for asking. You could connect both your USBC-6950UE adapters to your laptop/system using either USB-A or USB-C (if available) on your system and that should satisfy at least four external monitors without needing a Hub. Most laptop/systems come with USB-A and now USB-C ports so instead of using a Hub, you could simply use your onboard USB ports instead. Please keep in mind that your USBC-6950UE adapters are only capable of providing two external monitors at a time. Not four. The reason I mention this is you brought up eight monitors so I wanted to help clarify. If you were looking to connect four more monitors then you would need a Hub such as the USB3-HUB7C and two additional USBC-6950UE adapters (or UGA-HDMI-2S adapters as seen in this video) to accommodate eight external monitors. All that being said, please note that this video does describe some possible limitations (video start 1:37) so you will want to keep this in mind if you are looking to add additional monitors past your CPU or GPU specifications.

As we mentioned in our previous reply there can be some technical limitations to running 8 monitors in this way, please refer to the 1:37 mark in this video for more information on that.

Is UGA-HDMI-2S displaylink technology? To bypass single display limitations on M1 MacBook Air
@Plugable
@Plugable 2 года назад
@@rogerhuang2413 Thanks for asking! The UGA-HDMI-2S is actually a SMI device, that functions similarly to our DisplayLink products. Just like with our DisplayLink products, you will need to install the SMI driver in order for the UGA-HDMI-2S to work on your MacBook Air. The UGA-HDMI-2S adds external displays to your M1 Mac without counting against the limit of 1 external display. Meaning you can actually run a total of 3 displays when adding the UGA-HDMI-2S to your MacBook Air M1. You can download the SMI drivers here --> plugable.com/pages/siliconmotion As always please feel free to reach out to us directly if you are in need of additional support! --> support@plugable.com -Sean

Realistically, what is the limit on the amount of displays you can output? What if I wanted to double it and do 16 outputs?

Thanks for asking! Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this setup for macOS. In our experience macOS limits the amount of USB connected displays to 3.

How much strain would this put on the graphics card could the laptop keep up with that amount of displays without overwhelming it?
@Plugable
@Plugable Год назад
Thanks for asking! It's hard to guestimate what the load will be in a generalized way. I can note that the majority of the weight (and strain) will be put on the systems CPU, and overall system bandwidth. If you have a system in mind, can you please share the make and model? Hello, Thank you for asking! With macOS based devices the maximum number of supported external displays is 4. Please note that the InstantView driver software is required and you can download that from here --> kb.plugable.com/en_US/docking-stations-and-video/1237488-silicon-motion-instantview-installation-instructions-for-macos-10-15-and-later Please let us know how we can be of any additional assistance, we're here to help!
