Good suggestion: Ditch the OTG adapter and use a USB mini to USB C adapter. One cord, no man in the middle connections. It's cleaner and more direct - every link in the connection cuts into the signal a little. Just make sure the cable handles data as well as power before you buy it.
It might depend on the app you're running. My native video app doesn't support external audio sources so it didn't recognise my H6; I had to buy another video app. There should be somewhere in the operating system where you can see if the device is recognised by the O/S....you might have to delve into some googling for that.
Thanks for the video, I gave this a try and it works beautifully, but people should keep in mind that even if the operating system recognises the H6 as an audio device, your specific audio and video apps may not support anything except the in-built microphone. I had to find a third-party app for my Nokia 8 that would support USB Audio, and after failing to find a free one that worked bought FiLMiC Pro for Android, which was around AU$21.00 (approx US$16), so I can vouch for that one. Another tip...if your USB-C OTG cable keeps falling out (in which case I found the H6 shuts off), then it's probably because the socket on your phone has jammed up with lint and dust. You can scrape this out with a very fine pick of some sort (I've used a tiny jewellers screwdriver but I'd recommend finding something non-metallic so you don't short anything, and do it with the phone off).
@@oneshottabletalk7599 Out of the box the H6 has 4x microphone/line inputs and two optional clip-on microphones (I think both are stereo). You can buy alternative optional clip-on microphones (shotguns etc.) but I bought a clip-on that provides two extra line/mic channels, so you can get 6 mono inputs simultaneously. When connected to my phone these are mixing down to stereo (you do the mixing on the H6)
@@oneshottabletalk7599 if you're live recording acoustic instruments the H6 is very handy, but depending on what you're doing you might want to look at their multitrack units as well, such as the R24/R16 which have a proper mixer interface and can record 8 tracks simultaneous (and play back 16 or 24 tracks). There are also Tascam equivalents to both the H6 and the Multitrack recorders, plus other brands in the portable record space. That said, the H6 is a very handy and proven unit, designed to mount on a camera for field recording.
Hi, thanks for this! You sound knowledgeable about these things..I am trying to connect my iphone 11 pro max the a Zoom H6 in the same way as you have but I am getting 'accessory requires too much power' message. I am hoping to record a podcast outside and cannot support this with mains power. Your phone didn't get this message though? Do you know of a workaround?
Hm… that time I was using a Samsung phone. Now using iPhone also, but 12th. Did not try it with Zoom. For iPhone, there are a lot of mics which can be connected to the lightning input directly, so with iPhone I moved in that direction. I bought Shure MV5. But Shure MV5 quality is worse that Zoom. But what can be compared is Zoom MV88. I haven’t tried it, but I see it has very alike capsules as Zoom H6
Very nice! I have a Zoom H6 and the kit with two plug in mics and 11' extension cable and don't use it at ALL. Could you also use the line out of the H6 and use a stereo mini TRS to go to your phone, tablet or Ipad?
You would need a TRRS adapter that splits out the microphone and headphone jacks, then you would use the external microphone input on the phone/tablet. It's only mono though, and make sure to turn down the output volume.
Hi. I’m wondering, in this tutorial which device is actually recording the audio? Is it the phone, and the H6 is in essence simply working as an improved microphone; or is it rather the H6 itself making the recording, which in turn would capture the audio in much greater depth and detail? Thank you for the video.
I try this but the H6 won't power on when only connected to my smarthphone :(. Do you know if batteries have to be full for this? because it works with my pc but not with my smartphone :(
It will be while the H6 is connected. But what’s the problem with that? You can use the headphones plugged into H6, or use the headphone out to lead the sound to some external speakers
Do you know if it is possible to add more microphones to this same setup? I want to use all the microphone inputs or will the phone not record so many microphones? Thanks
Could you use a usb-c to 3.5mm male which plugs into the line out, then to a smart phone which uses the usb-c? Is there a difference in quality in the usb and the 3.5mm line out? Great for backing up your recoding on the fly. Thanks :)
Best video and review on this topic. Thanks so much. Really helped me. Do you know if this would also work with the 3.5mm Jack Cable instead of USB c OTG? And also I'm guessing it works with the Zoom H8 too? Thanks again...
do you ever have an interference issue , i tryed to use this setup for instagram live but when i was finished the audio was so bad . it was very noisy and sounded like digital interference ?
Thank you SO much for this video, this is going to change my day to day lifework as I do up to 4 Videotutorials a day for my students with H6, I was recording on computer but video quality is much better on the phone. ❤🙌🏻
@@BudgetVideoAsia Sorry don't know what you mean by OTG? To be honest I've moved on now and use H8 for sound recording, Galaxy S20 for the video and tie them both together using Davinci Resolve which is free audio/video software which is pretty good to be fair.
What a beautiful composition first of all! What is the name of it? Can I ask you if there is possibility to add effects to the sound through the recorder?
Thanks marina! Question! Does this set up drain your batteries in the zoom h6 recorder? If so, would you suggest getting a splitter mini usb cable cable to power the zoom with one end and the other end to send audio to the phone for broadcast. I tried your method using my iPhone and my usb camera adapter. Everything works with this set up except for the brand new batteries always dying so quickly because the usb medium is being powered by internal battery power . Let me know your thoughts asap
I was using the batteries power, but they were “dying” as fast as they usually did :) I think it is possible to power the Zoom with the usb cable while using it with phone, it’s worth a try in any case
But the iphone internal mic is still recording at the same time while the zoom is recording even when they are connected, right? I have h6 with iphone x. Thanks
No, in my case the sound from Zoom goes INSTEAD of the phone mic. And when I start video recording, I see the message "the sound is being recorded with an external USB microphone". So, speaking about Android - the sound from Zoom just is being recorded as the audio trqck for yiur video. And in the recorded video you alrwady have this sound (this and only))) Maybe on iPhone it will differ, but I suppose that it will be the same :)
I did not check, but it seems like it will be just mixed - in any case, the audio track is only 1 when you record a video on your smartphone, for example. But though you can control mixing levels on ZOOM H6 directly)
Hi Marina, thankyou for your video. You are the only one who's covered this. I am trying to get it to pair with my Galaxy S10 but I do not get the recognition message when I press record in video. I am using a brand new Samsung OTG adaptor. Can u think of any things that I may have overlooked. I followed your video exactly. Do u have batteries in your H6? What other settings do you have set on your H6. Please help!
Hello! My ZOOM H6 is connected to the electricity via cable. So it does not take power from the smartphone. May be that is the mistake. Your ZOOM is to be SWITCHED ON and connected to the phone.
Yes yes yes)) you've noticed right - I just haven't used ZOOM for several month and forgot.) I have batteries in it, and I connect it (usb -> otg -> phone), than turn ON the Zoom, and the screen of Zoom becomes active, it turns on - so you can see it works. Everything like in the video.)
Maybe if you choose "usb storage" instead of "audio interface" in the beginning of the connection. In tjis case the smartphone should recognize zoom as a usb card
@@MarinasDecacorde Nope, But I'll keep trying. I would be great to record video on my smartphone and simultaneously record wav audio. Now I record the audio separately on the Zoom , but then have to manually sync. Not a huge problem ,but just one more annoying step, Thanks for the help.
Madam is there any difference between zoom h5 and zoom h6. And if we connect blue yeti mice to zoom then blue yeti audio quality increase like shure mic
I haven't tried to connect Zoom H5 (I do not have it). But here in comments I've noticed that some people have problems with Zoom H5 connection. The mic quality increases due to the pre-amp, which is in the recorder, so IF all the system (zoom + mic connected to it and turned on) will work with the phone, than the pre-amp will work like it has to 🙂
Than I suppose that means that this pair doen not wirk well together - your smartphone model and Zoom H5. Btw, I'm not sure about Zoom H5 - if it will work like we need. Maybe you should try it with another smartphone. And if it is still not working - than, it will look like that Zoom H5 os not made for this. Maybe someone from the comments tried it with Zoom H5? I van not check, unfortunately, because I own only H6 model.
