Rachel, want to thank you for your video... I inherited a Ford 1310 this year and did a few projects around the homestead. However, the 3ph after a while would not raise - hard to dig post holes like that. I cleaned the hydraulic fluid filter and changed the hydraulic fluid. It worked great for about 5 post holes... I cleaned the filter and topped up the fluid. No dice. Went on a youtube and found your video - It worked like a charm! Thanks again...

I have been scratching my head on and off for a few months on my compact tractor as hydraulics stopped working after changing the oil. Thankyou so much ,this worked for me today with a couple of blasts of the airline .When my hydraulics starting working again I jumped for joy .

To those that chastise Rachel for starting it from the ground and not in the seat, the Ford tractors of that era (I'm not familiar with newer ones), have an interlock with the starter button that won't allow it to be pressed if the transmission isn't in neutral.
@tfw112
@tfw112 7 лет назад
You are soooo right. Unless someone has bypassed it along the way. I have 6 screws in my right foot because someone bypassed an interlock....and somewhere in the day a kid popped the trans in gear. I started it up and was promptly run over, broken leg, crushed foot, but survived to tell the tale.....safety interlocks are good...if they work...ALWAYS be mindful of the previous owner/user and at the very minimum, wiggle that shifter.
@johndough9187
@johndough9187 7 лет назад
Except every old tractor I ever fooled with no longer had a functional interlock. I just make sure it's in neutral regardless. I park mine in neutral.
@walterk1221

Terry Wall it's your fault for not ENSURING the transmission is in neutral. Sad that you were injured but it is your own haste and negligence. Good that no one else was injured.

Rachel, You know what you are talking about! The lift on my IMT539 (IMT stands for Imitation Massey Tractor.) would go up but not come down unless it was turned off for a while. I was dreading the idea of opening into it with my limited knowledge of hydraulic lifts. I tried your trick and it fixed this issue. I forgot to crank the engine first though, but my lift now goes up and down. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

into the reservoir on the left side, the plug with the square head. Use a little pressure with a rag wrapped around the air gun and be sure the reservoir is full of oil...stay clear of the moving hydraulic parts when the pump gets primed from the pressure..

By God, that's BRILLIANT! That'll also prove if there's a hole in the suction line or a bad suction pipe inside the gearbox. If you pressurize the gearbox and get air out of the inlet to the pump, you got a bad suction pipe. I know what I'm doing tomorrow... THANKS

For purposes of clarification, it would be helpful for her to explicitly state that she is referring to air pressure from a standard air compressor, and that the pressure is being applied to the tube vacated by the hydraulic dip stick.

Great Video Well done and described . I have heard of this Hydraulic priming method talked about on some tractor sites and they warn to not build up any pressure past a few LBS or this could harm seals. Just use air tenderly and sparingly as she did just enough to move hydraulic fluid into pickup tub and hyd pump area. and when you see the 3 point lifting stop using air.

This video helped us out of a jam today. I didn't even have to seal the hole with the air needle going in and the pump picked enough oil up to start raising and lowering. All we did was drain the oil and fill it back up, and it wouldn't work. Not being a tractor guy, this video helped immensely.

Thank you for the tip about the hydraulic pump prime. Goes to prove that you don't have to look/act like a "grunge", to operate/fix equipment, especially the "old stuff".☺ My wife is better at operating, as opposed to fixing. Oh, she's GREAT at DIS-assembly. But the RE-assembly she needs a bit of coaching with, still! And, she doesn't look like no "Tugboat Annie" herself, either, although she does insist upon a pair of those light-duty Mechanix-brand gloves, since she ain't got "elephant-hide" on her knuckles like I do.☺ I'm proud of her liking to help me, especially since she seems to enjoy it so much. And quite often, that smaller-hand will fit in spots that my beaten & swollen ones won't, and therefore get the job done and over with. That, and I must admit: That "three and a half-fingered" grease/sweat-wipe across her cheek looks a lot-better on m' little red-haired Katy, than it do on ME.....!☺

I have a 1979-1980 Ford 3600 Diesel with a Dunham Lehr / Farmhand 22 Loader. The loader worked without any problems what-so-ever when parking it back in November for the Winter months. Now that it's March & we got a 55 degree day, I wanted to start up the tractor and get some routine maintenance done on it...but even thou the tractor started right up, nothing happens when I push or pull either spool valve handle for the loader. I tried the selector valve that pulls in and out and is located below the right hand side of the seat which faces the hi/lo shifter but whether it's in or out didn't make a difference....this is the valve that diverts flow from the 3pt arms to the auxiliary flow for the loader, and when it's pushed in my 3pt arms work like they should and when it's pulled out they don't work and so I know that it has to be pulled all they way out or in the middle for the loader to work. I disconnect the pressure line at the loader's spool valve and leaving this line connected to the selector valve, and then started the tractor whereby sliding the selector valve in and out to all positions but still no fluid came out the selector valve's pressure line. I looked all around the under side of the tractor and the ground but there's no leaks. I also removed the small plug on the back right side of the tractor to check the differential fluid and it was full and wasn't milky looking. Even though the fluid didn't look milky as if there is water in it, Is it possible to get moisture in the hydraulic system and it froze up and won't let the hydraulic fluid circulate through the selector valve and then to the loader's spool valve....or something like that? Does the external pump on a 3600 need primed and if so, how is it done properly...does a 3600 need to have air blown in through the differential's fill hole since there is no dipstick on a 3600 to check the rear end fluid however a 3600 does have a dipstick for checking the transmission fluid that's located near the hi/lo shifter.

Thanks you for your knowledge, Can you answer a question. I had to replace my pump on my tractor because something caused it to continue to spin the nut off that holds the gear on to the pump. Which caused the keyway break or ? Needless to say my new pump has done the same thing. Can you tell what is wrong, this cost to much to continue to do this. @DanGingell
@DanGingell 9 лет назад
Phil, This is easy to troubleshoot by removing the side door (the one without the PTO lever). Shine a flash light in there with your 3 point arms in the up position with the tractor running and you'll be able to see where the oil is leaking. (Do NOT put your hand or any tools in this compartment!). If the top piston has blown the ring, then oil will run from the top down--just be pouring out. If the head gasket is blown, oil will also run down from the top. If the relief valve is the issue, it will bubble up from the bottom of the pump. If the top lid gasket is blown on the inside, then oil will be running down the side of the transmission case on the inside. This would be hard to trouble shoot with the tractor taken apart, but easy to trouble shoot with the tractor running by looking through the access panel on the side. For further help, watch my top lid repair video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XcWtNVOxzDg.html Or consider purchasing this DVD: www.farmtractorrepair.com/product-p/1250.htm

When you say "pressure" in the video, is it air pressure or hydraulic fluid pressure? I don't see hydraulic fluid when you pull that hose away, so I think you mean compressed air, but that looks like a hydraulic hose, and you never say what it is. So it doesn't work to remove the priming plug and re-prime the pump that way? (Because my pump seems to keep losing prime, and priming it at the priming plug seems to keep finding air, though the plug is taped.) Also, how much pressure?

There are no visible leaks. open up the box and all i could find was a broken spring. put it back together and had a little improvement so now once it's up it no longer falls back down. The PTO runs the hydraulic pump, so it has to be engaged for the hydraulics to work. If you disengage the clutch, the hydraulics stop working since the PTO is not "live".

I have a quick question I have a Ford 2N 1943 tractor I just got. I was disking with it today, and it will not lift the disk its the same size as the one you are using, and it would not lift it. I saw place's were it can lift up to 800 LB and 1200 LB with a front weight. yet this will not lift it. now if I put the level in the up position it will try but will not lift but if I and a friend I have pull up on the disk it will go up and stay up. Can that be the PUMP. If so please let me know if you have any idea of what it could be so I can get her fixed up right. Thanks in advance.
@DanGingell

McCuneWindandSolar Doesn't sound like an issue with the pump. If I had to guess, t's probably the piston being blown or the relief valve. I have a old Massey Ferguson tractor with a front-end loader but the buckets on the loader will roll down on its own slowly as you're using the tractor what do you think could cause this?

Sounds like the cylinder packing is blown, causing the oil to escape to the other side of the cylinder. You'll need to re-pack your cylinders by taking the cylinders apart and replacing either the o-rings or leather (depending on which type you have).

Very good video. Excellent presentation. Do you have more information on the hydraulic/transmission oil you used. Can I find it any where, say at TSC?

Bob, we use Hydra-Trans oil, which is definitely available at TSC stores. This oil will service both the transmission and the hydraulics.

I have a MF diesel tractor. I changed a few hydraulic hoses and filled it up completely. My bucket does not raise. Have any ideas? Thank you.
