A professor once tilme to add a (hook) in the beginning to attract teasers. He told me I can use a personal experience or sentences or a story of a participant in the study, relevant of course. But I wondered how to do this in an academic context where first person writing style is not preferred, and the writing is very formal.
Hi bartooma, great question! Yes, a good hook can set the paper off to a great start. If there's one place to connect more personally with the reader it is in the hook. Sharing a relevant personal experience or a story of a participant are great ideas for this. If sharing your own personal experience, just be sure not to share your OPINION about something or about the experience, but rather how that experience made you wonder about something and how that led to the research topic. In a few of my own academic papers, I have used relevant field notes of mine in the hook in order to capture the reader's attention.
