I'm currently cycling a big jar right now for shrimps. Will probably be adding critters in 2 weeks' time. I'm just waiting for the temps to cool down because we're currently in the tail end of high summer heat here in south east asia.
Nice, just out of curiosity, how easy is it for you to get shrimp, bettas, and guppies? I have been thinking of moving to South East Asia for a while but don't want to give fish keeping up. I know bettas are easy to get in Thailand but not sure about other countries.
@@GlassBoxDiaries I'm from the Philippines and fish keeping has been very popular here for decades now. Ornamental aquatic husbandry is a thriving industry locally so it's very easy to obtain shrimps, betas, guppies, arowanas, Oscars, etc.
I've still not done this but definitely want to. Tough to find a jar i like that also has a suitable lid - like the other commenter, i have a cat, who's already tried fishing in my betta cube once. Made a huge mess, but Milo the betta and his Amano buddy are fine. I wish hygger products where available here, they've got some great, inexpensive small stuff
Yea the jars are pretty expensive over here unless you use an old pickle jar or something. Thankfully more and more of the Hygger range is making it into the European markets and they have some great kit.
A company named Vevor seems to be getting in on the aquarium game - they often do a lot of catering and foodservice grade equipment at really low cost, amongst other random tools and accessories. They're a pretty good sweet spot between good quality products and a decent price point They seem to have shops in lots of places including the UK so it might be worth considering. I can't attest to the quality of their aquarium product line but I've used other stuff from them and I've been impressed. I suspect that they just find the best selling products and get a manufacturing company to make stuff to the same specs but with Vevor branding on them. Might be worth considering.
I have a 3 gallon vase with plants attached to wood, a heater and a light and a mini sponge filter at the bottom. It was set up for over 6 months. Then I added 3 red shrimp that did fine but never bred. Unfortunately when I went and bought a few more, I lost all but one shrimp after adding them. Checked and there was a slight ammonia spike. Not too sure why. Maybe a bit too much leaf litter or food (I barely fed). Do you do water changes in the jar?
I used to just do water topups with my first shrimp jar but I want to do 10-20% water changes with this one to prevent TDS build up potentially becoming a problem :).
