I am 76 years old and have just begun to learn to play the guitar. Your lesson on how to memorize the fretboard is wonderful! I think I can now see light at the end of the tunnel! thanks.
*****:: The only thing I can memorize, is the shortest way to the refrigerator, where I keep boxes of ice-cream. That won't help much, I guess. I can't read music.
I've had musical theory grinded in my head throughout band in high school but I have always had a hard time learning the notes on guitar. This man just taught me the neck very easily. You are a GOD!!
It's sad I just turned 40 and have been playing guitar since I was 13 and never learned the fret board. Read how to books and I always was Thinking it was to complicated to take intrest in it. So I just played by ear and just had to memorize what I played and you explained that fret board to me in 9 minutes. Thank You very very much!!!!!!
I’ve taken guitar lessons, tried teaching myself and learning the notes just wasn’t clicking... until this video. As simple as saying the guitar alphabet is A-G and there is no B or E sharp made everything click. Thank you
I have been playing for 40 years and been in countless bands, recording studios etc. all by by ear, I never learned the basic notes and you have a simplistic teaching method. Thanks for sharing!!
I’ve been playing for a few weeks now and this video was like a revelation! So simple and yet I feel like I’ve learnt so much from this. I have a musical background but never played guitar until now so this has really helped me connect my previous knowledge to what I’m learning now. Thank you for sharing!
I’m on my 2nd year of learning guitar and at the end of my lesson tonight I said to my teacher that maybe I needed the note stickers on my fretboard. He wasn’t impressed. 🤪 Then this is my first RU-vid search for learning fretboard and I’m already playing some new scales across the fretboard. Wow!!! Thanks so much for those simple mnemonics. I already knew about Eddie, but the let it BE has been awesomely helpful. 👍🏻👍🏻
I am undergoing your free course and I cant thank you enough man. I’m halfway through it and I feel like I’ve made such a huge progress in finally understanding how the fretboard works. I first picked up the guitar more than 10 years ago, and bought my first Taylor guitar just a month ago. Let the journey continue. Love you guitar sage. Words can’t describe how thankful I am.
I’ve been “playing” guitar for nearly a year now and haven’t gotten very far. The most intimidating thing is being thrown into it and not even knowing what you’re looking at. This singular video has helped me understand what I’m playing more than any other video I’ve watched or book I’ve read
For god sake. I just started learning guitar. Had my first lesson the other day online through Skype or whatever and I just didn’t understand a thing. I found this video and Jesus this makes sense. What a great teacher thanks for this basic tutorial. I just subscribed. Cheers
You demystified the fretboard for me. Now I see it as a stacked octave of piano, each starting with "EDDY ATE DYNAMITE GOOD BYE EDDY" string hitting the white and black keys until I reach the 12th fretboard! Just brilliant!
Been playing guitar self taught for a few years in my teens and just picked it back up. I always knew how to tune my guitar using the 5th fret going down and sliding over to the 4th fret towards the bottom. Soon as you said they are in unison it all clicked. It’s basically playing all the same note😂 wow took me this long to learn that. Awesome video
ive been playing a year and a half and ive never understood this. I can't believe how simple you made that, the "let it be" tactic really works, great job
Wow. You are the first teacher who really gave me a starting point to figure out how a guitar works. Been watching guitar instruction videos for two days already!! Thanks man!!

Dude. Ran into so many websites and videos teaching the fretboard notes and making it super complicated. I stumbled across this video accidentally. Saved countless hours of time!! Thank you!
I have been playing 2 weeks and watched a dozen videos on this. You are the FIRST to help me understand simply by moving down the A and laying out the next notes. I feel stupid
Hey man, thanks so much. After watching this It just started instantly clicking for me! 5 mins of practice and I can find any note on the EAD strings at will already.
Im a piano player who once bought a cheap Strat and returned it cause i couldnt understand where the notes were. No one who teaches guitar online was able to help me grasp the notation like this! Subscribed!
I know this video was five years ago, but man. I had two different guitar teachers in my life, they were both amazing, but they never taught me this. I legit could never memorize the different notes, I just memorized which lines on the music correlated to which note. I could look a music sheet with a simple song and play it back with little practice, but could not tell you which letter notes I was playing. (My teacher thought it was impressive). This video changes that for me, thank you.
I think it's helpful to know the mnemonic, but it's easier to just memorize EADGBE, for one thing it's just 6 things, or if you know the two outer strings are E, then you really only need to memorize 4. The problem with Eddy Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddy is that you'll keep using it. So if I point to the D string, in your head you'll recite (Eddy ate dynamite...) Oh, that's a D string. Kind of easier to just memorize it.
Vincent Lok I agree. It's the same thing with memorizing where notes are on the staff. FACE...so one has to count the spaces and say that in their head. I think it's easier to just become familiar with where they are.
Fantastic. For as a absolut beginner like me this was very helpful. Today 20190721 it is my 50 year birthday and I am about to learn to play the guitar instrument.
I'm 58 years old; I've been playing piano since the age of 12; I picked up the guitar when I was 45, and I still haven' "memorized" all the notes on the fretboard. I'm very much a person of 'patterns' and association tricks. Every Good Boy Does Fine; F.A.C.E.; Every Mode has a relative major scale... AND NOW, B and E don't have a sharp!!! For me, that's HUGE! Thanks!!! It's the simple key I needed to open up a different way of thinking about it.
I’ve been playing guitar for almost 5 years and never learned the notes and this lesson helped me learn it right away thank you! I feel more motivated to play now!
I don't know what these people are talking about. I knew nothing about the fretoard and I never even knew that it had different notes! And I'm a beginner so this was really good! And now I will remember the Let It BE forever. Thank you so much, I know that knowing this will definitely help me in the future. :)))
Nicole Joseph I don't believe that you didn't know the fretboard has different notes. So then how on earth does a guitar produce different sounds and not just one monotonous sound??
Your methods and style were great! I am bi polar and my attention and interests go day by day. I have been playing with different guitar s for over six years and have forgotten a lot of what I had learned in the past. Thank you very much for your time
Oh. Woah. Thank you!! I‘m a complete beginner (just managed to switch between E, A & G Chords, somewhat fluently) and this helped a great deal. This is awesome. Thank you again ♥
I have been playing guitar for 10 years now, but i never learn the basic fundamentals or to read notes. I learned from reading tabs and youtube. It is very fulfilling able to name the note i would be playing. Now when my friends ask me what note i am playing on, i will be able to answer. Thanks a lot.
My god, I feel like an idiot. I was trying to memorize the fretboard and didn't realise the logical order the notes go in on the fretboard. This video helped a lot. Thanks.
I can only say thank you for this video. I feel that I've learned what you just tought easily. The chemistry behind the neck has baffled me and now I feel I've took a step towards progress. I love your video. Better than drawing it out with crayons.
just watched it. thank you. insanely easy to understand. i have been an "ear" guitar player all my life so now i want to step it up a notch and apply music theory to my playing. (i passed music theory 1 with a 93.2/A just today!!! WOO HOO) i kinda know how to read music now. so excited the old man (me) could hang with the youngsters! OK !!! ON TO THE 30!!!!!!! THANK YOU !!!!
I've been playing guitar for quite long time now but im not good at technical or theoretical side of playing. im using only my ears to familiarise the sound, this video help me improve my playing by just making me realize how can i improve more by applying what you disscuss here sir salute!
A good teacher shows you in a simple and understandable way...a teacher that wants to make lots of money out of you will make it as complicated as possible. .it's good to see that you are wanting people to understand. ...a True inspiration. Thank you
This is a great lesson! I learned the strings from the bottom down when i first started playing (1-6) so it was Easter Bunnies Get Drunk At Easter. I like the Eddie Dynamite one now too! That's great, thanks!
Idk if it’s the fact that it’s about to be 4 in the morning or he’s just that much of a great teacher but the past few of his videos just helped so much🙏🏽
This guy is stupid and did not take the time to understand music. most instruments including the guitar have a e# and b# but a # is just a way to say one key up like on piano for example b# and c are the same key as are e# and f the same goes for flats if he wants ignore 2 notes thats fine but not acknowledging the existence of two notes it's a serious flaw in a musician.
@the random pineapple As i understand it a # is just a half semitone increment. So a half semitone above a b would be an f, not a b#. I think what you mean is that you can play b# and e# chords; which is very different than being able to play those notes.
Well crap! That was so simple even an idiot drummer like me can understand it! Thanks man!! - Just watched this again after 4 years. I had forgotten I'd watched it till I read my own comment. 😂
Cara belajar gitar paling mudah difahami di semua video tutorial gitar di RU-vid. You really have all the extreme beginners in your mind unlike other guitar tutorials who treats beginners like pro with their advanced musical jargons used throughout the videos.
When I was taught the strings I was also given a 6-1 acronym.. was annoying for me to turn the order around once it got stuck like that. (but maybe I am just dimmer than most haha) Here is an acronym that will teach you the strings from 1-6 instead. Easter Bunnies Get Drunk At Easter Not hating on the Sage.. he is a great teacher.
Dude I’ve been playing guitar for twenty years and I’m not great but I’ve never been able to wrap my mind around this concept and now I’ve learned it in the first few minutes of this video !!! Thanks so much
You made me stop and think about how I know where all the notes are. I never really sat down and tried to memorize all the notes. Association is key. I learned chords, scales, intervals, the notes in each, and their relationship to each other, and how to play them. During this process knowing where they are on the fret board just happens.
Well... This teaches you how to find notes on a fretboard. However, it doesn't teach you a better method to memorize it other than "just memorize it". If you were to find say a c# on any given string you can only count the frets with this method. Great explanation but the title is misleading.
KEYS are just Pitch dude...All I know is...if the Music sheet or singer say...Play this shit in C# minor...I ma pretend the 4th fret is the NUT as if it was like in Amin...So Im just going to make the C# minor bar chord shape then lift my pinky to play the E note. Then it's all down hill from there. Then I ma harmonic minor , melodic minor , or harmonic major it.. Im just thinking in INTERVALS after I locate the ROOT note. As in #4, 2. maj13 or whatever the heck modes/scales I can play from each tone center. If the singer still complains and threw a harmonica at me... Then a light bulb will go off in my head....Oh..okay..you want this shit to sound country??? Then I ma play E major pentatonic from the NUT as if is was at the 8th fret....i personally dont really give a fuck if you call it the key of Fb... becuase Im thinking in terms of INTERVALS and the TYPE of intervals from the Fb.lmao Then I ma go to the IV chord and play a whatever A major intervals. or whatever chord progession starting from the Fb maj lmao In other words...Let say from C maj/ A min...I see the E note as the III from the major count or V from the A minor count. I see notes as INTERVALS, now. Not so much letters anymore...They had to lable them something.. They could has easily label them WUVXYZ.lmao i know where all the notes are at on the fret board. its actaully from doing what he's teaching. Plus whatever else i learn. Im not beyound doing single string runs or riffs either. It actaully help me alot when i mix with other type of fretboard navigation. if you played a 7 string guitar. it;s even easier to see. The patterns repeats itself over and over again...Lets say the Low B sting is added... At the 5th fret would be exaclty the same as it would be at the NUT. or you can barr your finger across the 7th fret...E note ( A string).. It's samething as it would at the nut...just an octive higher.
A possible method to learning the notes on the fretboard is looking at power chords. As long as you know the notes on the 6th and 5th strings, you'll get a better handle on the notes on the fretboard. With power chords, you play the root note on either the 6th or 5th string and the higher pitched version is played two strings over from the initial string the root note is played. So if you play the power chord A starting on the sixth string, you'll know that two strings over (4th string) from the note A and two frets up towards the guitar bridge/sound hole (7th fret) is a higher sounding A. Now what you're left with is figuring out what the note is being played on the 7th fret of the 4th string which is E. From there, you can try to find that same combination utilizing power chords as the main structure across the entire neck. You'll learn that you'll have to find some of the notes further up the neck on the higher strings (2nd and 1st strings; B and e respectively). You can do this with just about any note with respect to the 6th and 5th strings. Hope it helps.
You must remember that he prefaces by letting you know that this is NOT about memorization but rather about association to assist you in being familiar with the respective notes of the frets. He does a very good job in this video by teaching a fundamental building block for beginners.
wowww i didn’t know the frets were semitones for the string you’re pressing....my mind is blown this makes everything so much easier to understand! thank you
nobody ever explained it to me like that they just went by scales but i wasn’t understanding why or how anything related to each other...i’m obviously a beginner but i understand theory enough to where i can start understanding what i’m actually doing lol. this is great
B & E, I have always used the criminal charges, Break and Enter. It was just the first thing I thought of. EADGBE, a better one for kids, that they laugh at and never forget, than the dynamite one is: Eat-Apples-Daily-Grow-Big-Ears
I came here to learn a system to easily memorize the fretboard, but instead it was a video on the very basics of understanding musical notes and how they're placed on the fretboard. Good video for somebody who is an absolute beginner, but it's mistitled. I already know how to count my way down the board by half steps, I watched this expecting to learn a method for actually memorizing the board.
I ordered a guitar that is coming in tomorrow and im watching some vids before i pick a teacher and i must say. I actually felt something after you taught us the alphabet, like a moment of clarity or whatever. Thank you! Great video.
