After watching this, I was finding an address in Hollywood Hills area and I found myself lost at a dead end at the top of a steep hill. I did okay. It wasn't pretty, some profanity used liberally used, but I made the turn without falling or soiling myself. Thank you so much Fast Eddie.
Few years ago watched your u-turn vid. After 45 yrs of heavy bike riding (Harley dresser) started practicing these methods. Live on a 2 lane hwy and now regularly make u to my mailbox, then pull into driveway. Thanks again. Now gotta go practice on hills. PRACTICE GUYS!
Excellent video! When our son first got his MSF Certification, I made him practice turning, starting and stopping on a hill (i.e. which foot to dab) in a Figure-8 setting. The skills he mastered prepared him for when we went up to the mountains.
I dropped my bike two weeks ago this way. I just moved to San Diego from a flat state. Lol never have I needed to uturn on a hill before. Thanks for the video. Definitely a lot more power and higher rpm then I was giving it
My parking lot is on a downhill road but the best part is that it is 90 degrees right of the down hill road and it has also has an angle of itself . I am a new rider and I have to handle two downhills together and I forgot to add I need to lean over because if I don't my head will hit the upper wall of the parking 😂😂😂.
Same. When I got my last bike, I thought "am I ready for these mountain roads?". I got a little way up and thought "No.". Crap - now I have to turn around on this hill! Not pretty. I'm much better now, but still not up for figure-8s on a hill like that! ps I have a flip-front helmet - great for eyeglasses - you don't have to take them off when you put on the helmet.
New rider here (4 weeks) I had serious anxiety for you, now I have even more. Just confirms I’m not ready. Great video, Thank you. I subscribed too. You mix two of my favorite hobbies - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Riding into one. Question: same techniques as on a flat surface ? and 1st gear ?
Hi, I was involved in an accident last year and knocked of my bike by an SUV. Rebuilt bike and thanks to your videos, simple instructions and emphasis on practise, practise. I am back on the road and probably the most prepared and confident I ever been, cheers mate.
Oh snaps! I’m glad you’re ok bro, was wondering if anyone ever busted a hammie trying to catch the bike 😳. What do you ride if you don’t mind me asking?
@@lemonadebeat Yeah lesson learned was, let the bike go. I ride a Monster 1100 and those things are not too heavy but with short legs in a steep hill the muscle just tore instantly.
Very helpful video Eddie. I’m just getting a 1200GS so want to feel a bit more comfortable with slow speed turns. Coming off my heavy FJR1300 it’s something I still struggle with sometimes even after many years of riding. Great to see how confidently you rode that steep hill. Cheers
That blinking is strange because it does it in all your videos but once in a while it doesn’t. I’m from the east coast but have family in SanDiego,it’s beautiful there ,weather is constant, always perfect. My riding is almost over for the year. But we have sleds when the snow gets going. They are as much fun to ride as the bikes, but gearing up is a must at over 50 miles an hour or more at times in below freezing temperatures. I’m getting addicted to your channel. Loads of info lots of people that ride never thought of that need to watch to up their skills. I’m one, and have been riding longer than you. You have that practice thing imbedded in my mind now. That’s a good thing. 👍🏻
I live in a hilly area, but I've managed to avoid this situation, so far since back on the road last June. Now I have a lesson plan to work on. Also, one of the few times we hear from Eddie's camera operator. Video quality is consistently excellent, and Eddie speaking to the camera so natural, I hardly notice she's there. So..Hello camera lady--Great work!
This looked difficult even for you as an instructor. I think it is easier just to avoid u-turns on a hill. You can always drive further and find better place for a u-turn =)
Well done eddy , that left to right turn downhill or uphill is a killer for me . I fell on my ass on my first day out following the instructor in Edinburgh. 🤣💙🙏🌎🏴
Wow, Greg - that's so incredibly skillfull!!! ✨️ So scary to watch - that hill is so steep!!! 😮 But, as always - you give me golden tools to work with. ❤ Thank you so much! 🙏
I just picked up a new R1250 R triple black, what a bike bro.after watching your review, I was out on the bike yesterday, 5th gear 40 mph 2000 rpm cruise control on … no problem . You were absolutely right when you said “ The GS whatever you want the bike to do it does it “ No problem, same with the R1250 , amazing 👍🏾👍🏾
You ride like a motorcycle cop - which is to say - exceptional. Most of my years of riding were on Harleys with the low center of gravity. Can't lie, I had to adjust to so many things getting back on a comparatively high-revver (z900rs). There was nothing I couldn't do on my Harleys - except carve canyons! Lol
Awesome videos packed full of information! I've learned a lot just within a day of finding your channel. Also, the headlight flashing issue can be fixed by switching PAL to NTSC in the recording settings on your camera!
Wow you make it look so easy. Over here we don't have hills like that, everything is flat. But i bet if we did have them i wouldn't be able or dare to do it with my 1299S.
New rider here, I am just amazed about how gracious you look riding that bike while doing figures eight, I wish I could do this as easily as it looks for you one day!
Nice work. I like to avoid u-turns on curbed streets.1) It creates psych pressure; 2) you tend to fixate on the curb you are approaching; 3) if you goof up and need more room, you don't have it! If you must u-turn on such a street, find a place like you did: make your initial turn INTO a driveway apron or within a quiet intersection. Just my thoughts.
Awesome skills and control. Call me a coward, but when climbing a hill, I prefer to do a simple 3-step maneuver in order to turn, i.e. bike is pointing up hill: stop, put right foot on the ground, lean right, handlebar full lock to right and just slowly back up at 90 degrees, holding the bike with front brake (clutch pulled in),. Pivot foot is on the uphill side, bike slightly lean also towards uphill. Then just ride out carefully and turn left towards the bottom of the hill. Not saying it's a textbook maneuver, it just feels safe and controllable for me.
Your LED headlight flashing - it's because LEDs actually pulse on and off - but they're too fast for our eyes to see. The camera picks it up because it's in phase, kinda like how sometimes helicopter or plane propeller blades appear to stay still even though they're spinning at many thousands of RPMs. Love the vids! Come to Australia when you can - I dare say you have a decent following down under now!
You neglected to mention: the problem with doing U turns on a hill is, if the bike stops halfway thru, or you stall it, and it starts to lean towards the down hill side, your foot will catch nothing but air on the low side, and you will not be able to keep it from falling over. Then you have the even bigger nightmare of needing to pick your bike up, on the side of a hill. It can be done with practice, but in general its to be avoided. There are some things you can not do on a motorcycle, like pulling into a parking lot that is sloped left or right, and stopping - again one foot will catch only air and you will drop your bike. If you stop your bike on a hill, it has to be pointed either up or down. Also the more your bike weighs, the harder it will be to keep it from falling over. At a stop you can lean a 200 lb dirt bike 30° and hold it up easy. A 900 lb cruiser bike is difficult to hold at a 10° lean... They never bring any of this up in the MSF beginners course...
I did when I was talking about momentum. If you have good skill, the bike won't matter, watch this. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_DwL0VwPCg.html And why would it be mentioned? The MSF is 8th grade info...the very basics for people who never touched a bike before...riders have a hard enough time shifting to 2nd and not crashing on flat ground let alone a hill. Take more courses that are well above the basics MotoJitsu.com/courses
Aside from not target fixating. What is the purpose of turning your whole head towards the direction? Is the some sort of mechanical aspect of your body that I'm missing?
Reminded me of the time I dropped my SV650 in Escondido near a motorcycle dealership close to I-15. I was fine until halfway through when I suddenly felt that my bike wanted to drop to the downhill side while I was slipping the clutch, and down I went. Lost my newly bought aftermarket clutch lever, and the rest was fine on my bike. I can see that I probably should have gone faster, but it was a steep road.
Thanks for the vid. Did I understand you right, cut the power to rear wheel when making U turn coming down the hill? Does this not increase your chance of tipping over. Power on rear wheel = bike wants to stand upright more? Especially with heavy cruiser and passenger.
Pretty sweet idea dude as I am in San Diego also these hills can be quite intimidating as I just bought a big old KTM950 and that's pretty d*** pretty d*** heavy coming from a tooth stroke.. Plus I'm 66 years old thanks
In the Hong Kong motorcycle exam we need to do this too, but it is so much smaller, because our country's road are really narrow. I was be able to do it on a Honda cb125, but i cant do it on the suzuki 125ccc bike. i dont understand the reason. although both of them are just Driving school bikes
I ride a Versys 1000 and I am looking for good crash bars so I can practice safely. So far I haven’t found any suitable types though I am still looking.
show the technique required in a situation with a similar incline, but a lot narrower road where completing the circle is not possible and difficult to push a heavy bike back due to the incline
If the measurement on google earth is correct Lorings Street is about 26ft wide where you are. My road is on an incline, not as steep, but is only 17ft wide, now I know why I don’t feel confident enough to do a u-turn on it. One day maybe😂
Unless you're running off battery power the LED headlight does flash, since the bike produces AC power. But it flashes too fast for the human eye to realise that. Your "problem" is that the camera shutter and flashing LED are not synchronised hence the flashing on video... But that's more of a technicality regarding video recording... ;-)
Greg! Last time I wrote you I complained about the lack of parking lots available where I live but I have a nice 7.5 *8 mts space in my own house think that's enough? I'm more interested in slow speed things as I think I'm good enough on higher speed stuff
this is awesome. i recently laid my bike down on a hill. i was stopped parallel to the incline, i.e. as if you were parallel to your garage in the driveway. any tips for situations like this? I was at a stop sign and of course the bike leaned towards the decline of the slope and down i went.
there's no such things as laying your bike down, you crashed. Yes, go back and do that same thing 100 times in a row, you'll figure it out instagram.com/motojitsuclub/
@@MotoJitsu practice makes perfect! and yes i crashed it. thank god for wearing all the gear and the crash guards on the bike. I'll make sure to go back to the spot where it happened and repeat it till it doesn't happen again. thanks for the content and perspective.
