Re-Upload video is here! • How to Refinish a guit... Sorry for the audio issue, someone files a copyright claim and I had to mute the background music!
You don't need expensive equipment to get a high-quality paint job (on anything). I walk through all of the steps to refinish a guitar with nitrocellulose lacquer from stewmac.com . It takes some elbow grease, but the results are pretty good. (Paint results are better than my guitar playing!)

Came out great! When you broke through the primer into the red finish, part of me wanted to see that as the final result.

Good job bud! It looks great! Just a little tip for spraying. Take a little more time between coats and apply one coat horizontal and then one coat vertical. Alternating will give a much more even coverage and taking a little more time between coats will give you less orange peel in your finish. Orange peel comes from applying too much paint too quickly. The nitro will melt into itself. It's much better to have small areas of dryish overlap spray then to have a heap of deep orange peel. Hope this helps for your next project. Cheers!

Thanks for the tip! Im currently painting my own tele with a satin black finish, and after the try came with me sanding the clear coat off completely in some spots trying to get the deep orange peel out, i resanded and gave 10-15 minutes between coats and it definitely made a noticeabke difference

Also, not applying enough finish can result in a gritty orange peel effect.

I wasn't able to get that mirror finish that you did. I was tearing up paint before I got through the orange peel. Guess I needed more layers of clear? My guitar still looks great as it is now, thanks for the video! This whole project has taught me a great deal of patience.
@AdamBeckSpeed
@AdamBeckSpeed 6 лет назад
Michael Vance what grit were you using? I was only using the lower grits for a very short time. With a thin clear coat you’re just knocking down the highest parts with 600-800, you want it all to get level at about that same time you reach the 1500-2000. Think of orange peel as peaks and valleys, if you take the entire peak off with 800, there’s nothing left by the time you get to 2000.
@dscdrkel5546
@dscdrkel5546 5 лет назад
To get rid of the orange peel look*** the base coat must be dull and leveled before spraying the clear coat - block sand the body until there is no bright spots -- totally flat---DR KEL

I was pleased to see that you added shielding, but I don't think you completed the Faraday Cage. It didn't look like you added tape to the back of the pickguard and the tape in the cavities should extend over the edge a little so that it makes contact with the shielding on the pickguard.

I like to use a 2-part polyurethane clear coat. It is more like a plastic and is very flexible. It works with any other kind of paint and its great for mixing in additives like metal flake or pearl to spray between colors and final clear.

I painted my motorcycle petrol tank. Took advice from a spray painter. I used spray cans. I heated them up in hot water for 15 mins, then painted on the primed tank. While the paint was still wet, I sprayed it with the clear coat. I honestly thought I had made a total mess of it. The orange peel was terrible. Then about ten minutes later I couldn’t believe the finish. It all seemed to melt into itself, and the finish was incredible. I honestly didn’t need to polish it or finish it in any way, but I gave it a quick polish, and it looked amazing.
@19cubbies69
@19cubbies69 5 лет назад
Did you heat up the clear coat spray too?
@chriskeenan1
@chriskeenan1 5 лет назад
19cubbies69 Yes. I just left the cans in some hot water for a couple of minutes. It really worked well for me. Give it a try on a scrap piece of the thing that you are going to paint, or on something of a similar texture, to gauge the effectiveness first. If it works on that, then you will be fine to go ahead and paint your project. Good luck.

Adam, I used the exact same primer and then tried to clean it with zippo lighter fluid and it ate right through it also! I was pissed, but like you said, it's a lesson. I do like the Dupli-Color primer and paint. For some reason, it just seems to sand well for me, and it's durable ( as long as you don't use certain chemicals to clean it! ). Nice job bud. Thanks for the video. P.S. I watch all of Brad Angove's videos as well.
@AdamBeckSpeed
@AdamBeckSpeed 6 лет назад
Mark Ewing I’ve never used zippo fluid to clean anything before, hows it compare to other solvents? I thought prep clean was pretty weak but I was wrong on this primer. I like to use rubbing alcohol too
@markewing6780
@markewing6780 6 лет назад
Adam, Zippo lighter fluid is a staple for me for cleaning fret boards...etc.. It works great. Rubbing alcohol I'm not so sure about. The Zippo fluid gets any and all oils from your skin off of any surface. It WILL NOT damage a guitar surface, but it's strong enough to get dirt and oil off, and it dries fast. Really fast. It's perfect for priming a surface for paint. Especially after sanding and getting ready for final coat(s). It doesn't have to be Zippo fluid, it can be Ronsonol...etc.. Get you a bottle of it and try it on a dirty fret board. You will be surprised, trust me. Thanks Adam!
@fredthebasspro2256
@fredthebasspro2256 4 года назад
@@AdamBeckSpeed yeah, I have watched countless videos recommending lighter fluid for cleaning fret-boards specifically. Not sure how it would react with paint, but like he said, it doesn't have to be Zippo or Ronsonol. Essentially, you're just looking for "*Naphtha*" (a solvent) hopefully in it's purest form. It just so happens these well-known lighter-fluid brands contain it/are made of it so you may already have some laying around. The better bang for your buck is supposedly: "Klean-Strip - (1 Gal) VM&P Naphtha" or something similar. Just be aware (as many warn) to avoid getting products that are a mixture. You want something pure or relatively close to it from what I have heard. I mention this, because I have read this stuff may not be technically legal in certain areas or maybe harder to find these days or something? You know how they change chemicals & active ingredients over time based on science and regulations, politics, etc. so just be sure you've done your due diligence. Hate to see it melt something else because it was a mixture instead of the straight Naphtha HAHA! I've also heard people tend to use Naphtha when cleaning up rough condition guitars, or old guitars that have been played a ton, because like Mark said it's really good at cleaning (i.e. removing dirt and fingerprints and gunk, etc.). However, it might not be the best choice (given alternatives) for say, a brand new guitar you just bought and are setting up for the time time for instance. Different tools for different jobs I suppose, but this stuff comes highly recommended. Great video, thanks for the insight into the process and clearly labeling the grit sizes used and in what order! -cheers!

I actually liked it at 9'24" when he'd rubbed down the "mistake" he'd made leaving the original red color showing through! Could have rubbed the front down to match the back and then finished with loads of layers of lacquer. I reckon that would have looked way cooler than just black.

I could tell the results where not that good by looking at the reflections. It is extremely difficult to buff out a clear coat by hand. He should have used a 3" buffer with foam pads (at least for the first heavy scratch removal). I do this a lot!

Meguiars Ultimate Compound followed by Ultimate Polish followed by #7 Show Car glaze can get you a mirror finish. Even better if you have a buffer.
@Dogheadj
@Dogheadj 5 лет назад
You can also use Meguiars (or even Mothers) rubbing and polishing compounds to buff out surface scratches and minor imperfections on your guitar that you don't wish to refinish, but which has gathered these scratches from normal use. As you stated, it works even better if you use, say, a 6" palm polisher.

600 or 800 grit is fine to give the next coats enough to bite onto. Use 1000 to smooth out any drips or orange peel. After wet-sanding I usually wipe down with a cloth dampened with dish soap water to get oil off. It won't eat through anything like a solvent. Then clean water after the soap.

dan shaw it depends on what you’re starting with finish wise, and what color scotch brite do you have? Those are fine to scuff but they can make the surface lumpy. I’d just block to 400 - it’ll come out nice.

A point about shielding.After lining the cavities with copper foil you should create a "star wired" earth system by running a wire from each of the pickup cavities and also a wire that sits in contact with the underside of the bridge.Terminate the wire into the foil and then bring the wires back into the control cavity and terminate into the cavity shielding there.You now have a EMF shielding system i.e one cohesive shielding system. If you don't earth the the cavity shielding together all you are creating is a bit of antenna which defeats the original idea.

*THANK YOU* for this lengthy step-by-step , i have a Chinese Fender Tele that's black (w/black pick guard - and i HATE black unless the only other color with it is GOLD) and i wanna strip the black off of it, and re-paint a new color (maybe thin the neck too since my hands are on the small side)- ant advice during the sanding stage as to make my tele lighter? what areas can i sand to get rid of the weight and not screw anything up? i appreciate any advice - i'll be rewatching this constantly. *_(also those Fender tuning keys/tuners online with the "F" logo i wanna get for it but i was told it may only work for Strats based on some kind of drill hole... thoughts?)_*

I would like to mention that cutting the wires creates many additional points of failure.

if you got a polisher, shine would be 100 times better. also its better to get better spray can nozzle so you can apply the paint more consistently to have less orange peel etc.

Suggest a quick break from the fast-forward to give a blurb about grit changes during dry and wet sanding

This was amazing. So you don't sand the top coat at all. Just add the clear coat and then start wet and dry?

Yes. If it’s a fresh topcoat you can get away with that. If it’s old or not same type (this was all lacquer) you could have sanded color coat at like 400 or 600 before clear. My black color coat was super thin though too so I didn’t want to risk sanding through
