How to Eat Enough Food While Bike Touring

Eating well is so important while bike touring. To borrow an analogy from the motor vehicle world, our stomachs are our gas tanks, and just like with motor vehicles, we can run into all kinds of problems if we let our stomachs run empty.
In this video, I share a little bit about how I think about food and eating well on an bike tour overnight to the Anza-Borrego Desert in Southern California. And even still, I managed to make at least a couple of mistakes.
There are plenty of options when it comes to cooking gear, and I'm not necessarily recommending what I use, but here are links in case you were curious:
- MSR WhisperLite International Backpacking Stove (www.rei.com/pr...)
- MSR PocketRocket Deluxe Stove Kit (www.rei.com/pr...)
All music and sound effects are from Epidemic Sound. If you use the following link, you can get two months free, and if you subscribe, I'll get a free month as well share.epidemic...

Thanks for going through the effort of making this video. This is really authentic. Speaks to me, especially the planning and rescheduling. That's life I guess.

Awesome video! Love hearing about the behind-the-scenes of bike touring and all the prep work and logistics you do. I hope everything goes as planned next time but honestly the little unexpected improvisations are some of my favorites 😅. The editing was amazing btw!

Cup. Bowl. Both work. It's the trip that matters. Have fun and don't sweat the small stuff. Hope you'll get back to doing videos because they're informative and enjoyable.

Canister stoves, If anyone is stove shopping, the JetBoil MicroMo boils water in 1.3 mins. It has a heat exchanger, and regulator so it boils and simmers, a 4oz canister will last almost a week in the backcountry. Open stoves like the MSR Pocket Rocket are light, but inefficient. Multi fuel gas stoves are good above 10,000 feet and for snow camping. That 55 year old brass Svea, yep, I owned one in 1972, there is a reason they disappeared. Looks like you rode Old Hwy 80 to Alpine, then north on 79 or Sunrise Hwy to Julian, down Banner Grade into Anza Borrego. There is a neat way to make a loop of that trip with a lot of off-road away from traffic. Happy trails!☮

Great info and good to know about looping away from traffic! I'll have to look harder at the maps the next time I head out that way

The Stagecoach 400 route helps a lot for off road in SD county. Also road and dirt, from OB, old Hwy 80 to Inkopah, down I-8 is bike legal to Ocotillo, S-2 north to 78 west into Julian up Banner Grade, Farmers Rd in Julian to Wynola, 78 to Santa Ysabel, go north to Black Canyon Rd, turns to dirt, descend into Ramona, from there back roads to Lake Hodges and dirt trails around the lake, or go south to RB and Camino Del Sur to 56 bike path to coast. Complete loop from coast, mtns, desert, and return to coast. Leave OB early am Sat or Sun for low traffic out of SD. Happy trails!

The whisper lite series is a good stove. Its roots go back to 1898. For some reason the makers have abandoned the simpler original pressurized design made of brass tank and removable tower. The only moving part is the pressurizing pump, which needs a new gasket about every 50 years. No replaceable fuel line that goes from the fuel bottle to the burner tower folding stabilizer legs. My go two for a kick ass power house is the Optimus 00 still available on the secondary market. Fits comfortably in a two liter pot, with room left over for kitchen tools and nests inside a three liter pot and easily feeds four. When put together they look like a canister stove, but Kerosine burns almost twice as hot as a canister stove. For one or two traveling together I use the Seva 123 which is simple perfection and fits in a one liter pot. It has a built in wind screen heat key to adjust flame, cooks using one or two liter pot and runs on white gas. I have used it on week cross country ski trips. How did the hold up? Mine in use after 55 years and still going strong. The secret to getting enough calories in a day is to eat three meals and nosh all day long with finger food in your grub bag.

Tom, thank you so much for sharing all this great information on stoves, and it is so incredible that you have a one that has been in use for 55 years!

I guess with needing 6.5k calories, you should also have some food high in fat. I personally couldn't even hope to choke down that many calories in a low fat style. Buttered bread might be very nice, for example. Or cold pizza.
@kyleonwheels

Funny you should mention pizza, because that is exactly what I was thinking about while I made my dinner that night! And agreed, eating that much food is challenging, even when hungry for it.

Muilt fuel stove is only way to tour special world tour gas canister impossible to find in remote places .. the best stove for me is Optimus Polaris Optifuel as it can slimmer and easy to clean even when using it and dont have to change nozzle when switching fuels

You can file off the sharp edges quickly & easily. Multifuel is the key. You can also multifuel your canister burner with a few small lightweight adapters for butane & propane & ISO. Any more silly excuses?
@kyleonwheels

Thanks for sharing. I hadn't thought about using a file for the sharp edges, I have always just wrapped the sharp stuff in clean(er) clothes, but I might have to give that a try.

Kerosene?

I know the MSR WhisperLite International can use kerosene with the right fuel jet, and I think many liquid fuel stoves can so could definitely be an option

Do your self a favour, get some fresh pasta or even better get some couscous. With couscous you pour the boiling water onto the grains and allow them to cook for 2 min. No need to waste fuel boiling pasta for 20 min and you don't have pasta water to drink.
