Julia Trotti you've helped me so much! Boosted my confidence as a photographer that I've always wanted to be. I'm making it work with the equipment that I have but it's all working out just fine. A not so fancy camera Nikon D3100 and 50mm 1.8 and a not so color-balanced computer monitor lol - it'll all come full circle once I start investing in upgrades. But thank you from the bottom of my heart because you taught me the basics on manual settings, life changing! I'll display some of my work in my ig if you ever want to take a peek @piconsita Thanks again, you're my favorite RU-vidr as of now ❤️

Love it Julia! I’m about to buy a new body and trying to decide between 24 and 42 mp. Do you ever find yourself wishing your mark3 had more mp for post? Or does 24 work great for your fashion and vacay work??
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 лет назад
I've never had the need for more MP in my camera - and my photos have been printed out poster-sized before :) Keep in mind that sometimes the more MP a camera has, the noisier it is in low light!

The original photo was already quite flat and when you flattened it further using curve I though you ruined the whole picture. But the final result is amazing. It would be great to compare it with a regular S curve though. I think the real magic in your workflow is the B&W color sliders.

Julia, your videos are so inspirational & helpful. Purchased 3 of your presets and ugh... so beautiful! ❤️ Question: does your WB change for every shoot or do you have a standard/go-to setting? I want to shoot w/ a WB setting that makes it easier for editing. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to the next one, as always.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 лет назад
Thank you! I'm so glad you love them 💛 I personally like to keep my white balance at 5200K throughout the entire shoot so every image is the same. The only time I change it is if I am in extreme lighting conditions - such as indoors where I'll bring the WB down to suit the lighting or if I am shooting outdoors during dusk where it gets really blue! If you are shooting in RAW, the WB isn't the most important thing to change, so you could always just keep it at 5200K and change it in Lightroom afterwards :)

great tips, thank you!! i have a question... what's the effect of changing the radius on the sharpening? i've always wanted to know and I feel like I only change it just for the sake of it, not really seeing much of a difference
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 лет назад
Thank you! Changing the radius alters what part of the image is being sharpened. So when you hold down alt/option and bring the radius up, the white parts of the image are what are being sharpened. I personally like to sharpen my image everywhere (including the background) but sometimes it can come in handy when you only want to sharpen your subject!

I am not sure if you have done a video on this before but a video on how to shoot backlit with the sun coming through on the model or couple. (like this one is) I seem to be struggling with getting my settings right to make it look good in post. Sometimes the sun takes over the picture and sometimes it is just blown out in the back :( #struggleisreal

I do have one video where I talk about sunset portrait photography a little: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UDgmMZ9xSaA.html the audio is a bit messed up in it though :( So I would really love to make another one! My background is a little blown out in this photo as well, I just try to underexpose my subject a bit so I can save as much of the background as possible.

How can i keep the lips red after i turned the photo to B/W? I treid to bring all the colors down except the red but it had also made the face red on some parts
@iaindonald7868
@iaindonald7868 6 лет назад
Honestly, it looked like you were undoing some of the things. For example, you put contrast up and started crushing shadows in the face/hair. Then put shadows up to bring detail back out, then pulled blacks down and started crushing them again. Felt a bit aimless. Sorry if that sounds harsh, just what I saw.
@chamamwanga144

Hey thanks for the video. Quick question. If I wanted to keep the whole image black and white and just colour the flowers. How would I go about it
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 лет назад
Thanks! I would go to HSL and bring down the saturation to -100 for every colour except for the ones that are affecting the flowers. If there is still colour in your image after that, then just use an adjustment brush to desaturate the rest of the photo you want to be black and white :)

I think you are one of the best natural light portrait photographers I’ve seen, you have a phenomenal talent...but, I’m really sorry, I prefer film for black and white images. I know I’m most likely in a very tiny minority and I'm going to get slaughtered for saying it. But it’s a great image and a brilliant tutorial for the billions of people who probably disagree with me.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 6 лет назад
Thank you! And that's okay, we all have our own preferences! I love film black and white as well - there is no equivalent. But when I am shooting for a client (such as the photo from this shoot), I don't really have time to pull out a film camera to be able to capture some specific black and white shots, so I lean on Lightroom to be able to do that instead. I would love to be able to do that on a personal shoot sometime though, perhaps I should!
