Deep dive into logging interviews! What tips and tricks do you have for logging or editing interviews? How do you like to log your interviews? Let me know!

@jaapvw66 4 года назад
Hi Matthew, Still happy with the tip you gave me for logging the footage.I had to use it again today, and although the time is often too short to log all the footage, it is still very useful and fast. This brings me to my next question. Do you have any experience with transcription sites, and if you do, how do you use them?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 4 года назад
@@jaapvw66 I do! I use Simon Says for transcription and although they have an FCPX extension, I still export an audio file of what I need transcribed, upload to their site, pay to have it transcribed, and then have it handy if I need to copy and paste it in to FCPX as I log footage. Simon Says is fast and affordable, and they do a good job with accuracy. Of course there are always spelling issues or words they didn't understand. So far I've been very happy with it when I've needed to use it.

Wow - that's so great to hear. It really is incredibly powerful software, but there are certainly frustrations when trying to use it in traditional film / tv / doc post-production workflows. It can be done, but things like kicking out an AAF, EDL, round-tripping to DaVinci Resolve aren't as easy compared to Avid and Premiere. But for actual editing (moving clips on a timeline) - there's nothing better than FCP and the Magnetic Timeline. I literally edit at the speed of thought, and it's amazing. Thanks for watching!
@Zoocster
@Zoocster 3 года назад
@@matthewTobrien Thankfully I haven't had to deal with the fuss of editing for traditional TV and have only been editing for youtubers but as you said in a previous video, with PPro every time you drop something in or change something about a clip, there's a whole series of technical parameters you gotta adjust-the technical "cleanup" after. Gets to be a drag when you gotta do it over and over for years on end.

I use favourites, keywords and tags, but rarely anything else. I don’t write out transcriptions but I’ll broadly name the clip. I feel if I spent a couple of hours transcribing an hour long interview I’d not really save an hour later, as I’d have gotten to know the general placement of audio etc by a certain point so it’s always put me off. I’d be tempted to try a half way transcription of further key words, rather than sentences
@matthewTobrien

My method of logging doesn't necessarily work for everyone, and it can often be overkill. I have found, personally, that when I don't have detailed notes/loose transcripts, I end up spending time watching through clips instead of just reading and grabbing what I need and staying in my creative flow with telling the story in the timeline. Either way, Favorites, Keywords and Tags/Markers are crucial for prepping/organizing your interviews! Keep at it!

Great advice and tips, but for a short documentary that only lasts 8 minutes, I am wondering how long it took you to do all the logging (even being a fast typer) and whether that is worth the time and work. I am editing a 90 minute feature doc and I perfectly manage by using keywords and/or title bars above specific sections/topics/questions. Logging over 15 interviews and +30 hours of footage the way you do it would take up way too much time. Time that needs to be charged to the client. For very specific projects (with multiple editors working on the same project, where there's a budget for an assistant editor, where the shooting and editing takes place over an extended period of time) I understand this may be worth it.
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Год назад
I love this conversation, and I appreciate you dropping this comment. To me, this process of logging and organizing your footage - no matter the length of the video - *_IS_* what editing is all about. Even if you're acting as both the assistant editor and editor. The editor's job - heck, duty! - is take everything we get from production and organize it. That means transferring the 2nd ACs notes, the Script Supervisor's notes, and then any of our own logging that we may do. We're building a massive database of footage that's searchable, that's keyworded, that's sorted into Events / Folders / Keyword Collections & Smart Collections. To me this is a crucial part of the craft of video editing just like pouring a solid foundation is crucial to building a home. You can't skip it if you want to build the best video, film, documentary, etc. And it's our job as freelance editors to understand that this step in post-production needs to be included in every bid or proposal we write for our clients. So why bother on an 8 min film? First, to me, it's part of the discipline. And it allows me to continue to improve my workflow for organizing and logging so that when the big jobs come up, I've iterated on my workflow to make it work best for me and the post-production team. And secondly it's what allows me, while I'm editing, to remain in the Creative Flow for as long as possible. The actual editing process is never breaking down or stalling because I've fallen out of the flow due to extended searches for footage, listening to interviews to see if I can find the right sound bite, etc. And thirdly, I truly believe that to have the best chance at editing something masterfully, you need to have seen every single frame of film/video that was shot. So if I'm handed a massive hard drive of footage with interviews and b-roll, I want to sit down and watch every frame of it, listen to every interview, and me typing into the Notes field helps me to store all of those interviews in my short term memory banks so that while I'm editing and saying to myself, "I need a moment in this film where someone says _________" I'll know exactly where to look for that moment. And if I've logged correctly, I most likely can type in a single word into the Browser's Search field to isolate that moment amongst all the footage I've been delivered. I edited a nearly two hour documentary a few years back (it's on Amazon Prime, actually - at least it was for a while), and I wasn't there for any of the interviews. And there were A LOT of interviews. I watched every second of them and logged them, and it made the editing process FLY. So the up-front investment, to me, is worth it even if it's a very short documentary. And because I charge a project rate vs. hourly or day rates I was content to do it because I was getting a great rate ($10k), and I knew it would make the actual editing that much more enjoyable (because I'd have longer stretches of time completely immersed in the Creative Flow). Now, when it comes to charging your clients.... This is why I don't bill hourly or by day rates for any of my work. I present my clients with a proposal that includes three options for me to edit a project, and all of those options include extensive assistant editing. For me it's non-negotiable. And if they don't have the budget for any of my options, then I decline the project. I'd be happy to talk more about how I price my work outside of the comments, feel free to reach out if you think that would be helpful: info(at)midlandpictures(dot)com And here's a link to my other video about why I log my footage so extensively: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bz_P8HlBFzc.html

 @matthewTobrien I thought I left a comment the other day, but it seems it didn’t go through. I’m rewatching this workflow as I try to come up with a strategy for favoriting/keywording/marking footage in FCPX. I remember your content giving some solid solutions (and I remembered correctly!). Thanks for your attention to detail! I’m wondering if you’ve attempted any solution with Resolve’s new transcription tools that could cut out the need for typing in the notes section. I’m a Final Cut editor, but the lack of good transcription tools are tempting me to use Resolve instead. Crossing my fingers for a Final Cut update with auto-transcription and better title/caption track flexibility.

Really helpful tips, clearly presented - thank you. It would be great also to see a sensible logging/editing workflow for reality / "fly on wall" productions. How I "broke" keywording: A few years ago I made my first ever long form (4 hours) of reality / fly-on-wall using FCPX, from something like 20 hours of multicam based on footage & sound shot over 4 days. Having read lots about keywords, and having a reasonable understanding of databases in general, I set about logging (cataloguing - hoarding - anything I imagined might possibly come in useful - having no preconceived "picture") richly via keywords. I ended up with something like 200 of them, exported (by a 3rd party app) to a spreadsheet so I could keep track of them (having found the keyword editor nowhere near able to sensibly handle such a quantity). Eventually I ended up ignoring those (!) and just using Markers in a sequence/project, because of the (wonderful) timeline index and the fact that the editing timeline is more ergonomic than the list-mode thumbnail (and filmstrip). Also markers being less precise than a range (as in Favorite or Keyword or In/Out selection) kind of fitted the vagueness of intention in using the available material. That type of production differs from the docu type presented here since there is no in-advance structure (like the Questions), just "wait and see what happens" then imagine (and try out) what might flow together as an overall story or journey, after the fact. In a way, all "opportunistic b-roll editing". I'd love to see workflow advice/examples on that type of initially organic/unstructured kind of material. Any thoughts?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 3 года назад
Awesome feedback, David. Love hearing about your specific use case. Markers are definitely a solid way to go, and you’re so right about the timeline index. It is universally underutilized I imagine. Check out my vid on logging footage in the Browser using list view. Very similar to how I log interviews and works great for a ton of non-interview footage. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bz_P8HlBFzc.html Let me know what you think!

Fabulous Tutorial Matthew. Quick question: do you favorite the synced clips (with the boom + lav tracks) or work on the clips with audio from the camera mic? And let the sound editor manage the rest in sound post?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien 2 года назад
I typically make a multicam out of all video angles that were filmed and, if audio was recorded externally/separately from camera, I'll add any audio angles into the multicam as well. If audio was recorded through camera (which I sometimes do for corporate interviews since the preamps on the C300 MkII are pretty dang good) I still make a multicam - just no need for any extra audio angles in the multicam. Once I have the multicam built, I do all of my favoriting/logging on the multicam clip. Most budgets around here don't allow for sound turnover in post, unfortunately. So we try to capture the best audio we can with a shotgun mic and a lav and then just do a basic EQ adjustment, compressor, and limiter. Not preferred, of course.

I've got an editing project that isn't a Q&A interview event but having the clips logged would be very handy for both this and subsequent editing projects. There are hours of material. The source clips are family home videos. What are your thoughts about the best way to log the clips? Perhaps marking In and Out points in the clips and Favorite/Reject them as appropriate, then the Favorites get renamed using recurring terms (names of people in the clip and location and the date shot or special event like birthday etc) then the text following the renamed Favorite contains additional info. What would you recommend? Thanks.

Right now it takes me to where it starts, and i use shift+right arrow to fast forward, but this is annoying. If i knew that one keystroke, i could do the whole thing faster. Anyone know how to start playing the timeline from the end of the selected In-out range?

It's Shift+O to play from the end of a selected range

Hi I love this. I've just tried it on an interview where I prepared and asked the questions, instead of transcribing the whole thing as I've done in the past. However - I can't find a way to print out these notes and I can only see the first sentence or so, of each answer, in the notes pane. Is there a way to see the full note? Is there a way to print the notes I've made? Thanks!

Well I can see the full note.. but only if I hover the cursor over that note. I'd like to just be able to see all my notes clearly without having to hover over each individual one and ideally print them all off, so I can share them with others. Thanks for your help!

So glad you were able to try this out on a project! But yes, there are certainly some limitations as to how awesome it is. Case in point, you can only see so much of the Notes field in List View even if you expand the width of the column to be as large as possible. This is why I edit in Final Cut Pro across two screens with my Timeline and Viewer in one screen and my Browser in the other. That way I can maximize the width of the Notes field so I can see as much of the text as possible. One other thing you can do is click on the "i" tab in the Inspector and in the "Basic" view you see the Notes field there as well, and it should be able to show most if not all of what you've typed. If the interviewee went on for several minutes, you may not be able to see it all. There is no way to print anything out of the Notes field in Final Cut Pro, unfortunately. But you can export an XML of, say, the Event that contains all of your interviews (export it using the "Basic" metadata view) and then import it into a great 3rd party app called Shot Notes X. From there you can export a .csv Shot Log and you'll see all of the fields from List View in the Browser in Final Cut Pro represented in the .csv Shot Log you just exported from Shot Notes X. From there you can adjust your column width and height for the Notes field and view all those shot notes, search them, print them, etc. Shot Notes X is available in the Mac App Store for $49.99. This app is most commonly used by Script Supervisors and Assistant Editors to get the notes from Scripty into FCP but it can go the other way as well. And thanks for inspiring me to come up with a new video/tutorial for my channel! I'm going to do a quick vid on how to do all of this!

@@matthewTobrien thanks for your reply! Such a shame FCXP don't have a simple print function or even allow copy and paste, but you have to go into each individual note and copy and past each one. I think the approach I might use - is do a full transcription and then bullet point the notes on the favourited clips. Thanks again for such great content.

Yes, definitely tedious. Transcripts are never a bad thing to have for interviews, especially if you’re collaborating with a producer, director, or a client who needs to see them. It can be a pain to go through them and then add notes in the Notes field in FCP, but this is what doc editing comes down to for editors/assistant editors. We have to build that searchable database in our NLE, and FCP makes it pretty dang easy. Definitely give some thought to Shot Notes X. A great tool to have to get notes from set into FCP and notes from editorial out. Thanks again for watching!

Hi Matthew, thanks for sharing this. Looked at the ‘Toymaker’ and wondered how you did the audio. Did you use a wireless lavelier mic or a shotgun mic for the interview. Like to now more about this? Maybe in another tutorial? Kind regards John

Thanks for asking! I hired a sound recordist to handle all the audio - both on location and the post-production mix. We used a wireless lav on Steve during the interview as well as a boom mic. Those ran through the field mixer (not sure which one/model specifically). For everything else the recordist boomed a shotgun mic. And then he mixed it all in ProTools (after I kicked out an AAF using XtoPro) to get the final product. Would love to do a tutorial on this, but not my area of expertise - which is why I love working in film because you get to collaborate with folks who are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their role in filmmaking. 👌🏻

Forgot to mention that we synced our cameras using timecode. We used Tentacle Sync equipment to do that, and I used their free app to sync up all the clips with the audio and then imported all that into FCPX with an XML. Worked beautifully!

Hi Matthew, thanks for your quick reply. Because of budgetary reasons, at the moment I need to stick to me doing also the audio. But it gave me insight on the process. Kind regards from the Netherlands.

@@matthewTobrien Hi Matthew, did you or your sound man set up the Tentacles? And why do you need to synch with there software when it seems easy enough to drop audio files into FCP and synch to clips? And what's an XML import...?
