Just a quick tutorial video on how to edit the Korg NTS-1 'WAVES' oscillator. The WAVES oscillator is a custom oscillator for the NTS-1 that comes pre-installed. It's got a lot more depth than the other oscillator settings but unfortunately the details aren't really covered properly in the manual or anywhere on the net that I can find. So here is my exploration of it. It can be an extremely gritty sounding oscillator, or layered set of waveforms when pushed.
I'll be covering how to use other custom oscillators in depth soon too as it took me a while to work out how that all works.

I was just trying out the Waves parameters and searched for some explanation of what they all mean, so this was perfect. For a small device and only 10 knobs there are a lot of features on the NTS-1 and a surprising number of interesting sounds to check out. Have you loaded any of the 3rd party oscillators, etc, and if so do you recommend any of them? The Shoebridge ones look interesting.

Thanks for this, really helpful. Quick question - what midi keyboard are you using for this? I'm looking for a cheap(ish) keyboard that I can use with the NTS-1 and Volca Keys (when I buy one). At the moment I'm not hugely interested in DAW integration, although maybe in future.

I'm using a Yamaha P115 but that will only work via a DAW as it only has usb midi. The NTS1 has a 3.5mm midi socket so if you get the correct adapter anything with a din midi plug will work, so there are a lot of option available. I've picked up midi controller keyboards for as little as £15 second hand so maybe look for something like that

Hello really interesting. I just got my NTS-1 and wondering around in You Tube for information and tutorials. For some reason the Waves OSC didn't come preinstalled on my Unit. I only have SAW, Triangle, UPN. Is it possible to get it from anywhere? Cheers.

It's been a while since I've used it but I think the librarian software I show in the video comes with the file for the Waves oscillator so it can be reinstalled. Hope that helps

@@ChrisLodyMusic Thanks. I opened the Logue SDK repo, and navigated into the logue-sdk/platform/nutekt-digital/waves/ folder. Unfortunatley i don't see any 'ntkdigunit' binary file. I see the sources it seems. Do you know where the exe file can be taken? Cheers

Is it actually normal that the NTS-1 has a fairly quiet output? I have to make extreme adjustments to the mixer.

It depends on the type of envelope selected I've found. Fairly quiet using some and on others so loud that it can overload the output so much it will fall silent and need to be turned down on the control on the back which is really strange

Good video. can you tell me after you went to all that trouble to edit the WAVES oscillator, does the NTS-1 remember the last settings, or does it init the WAVES oscillator on reboot?

Sadly the nts-1 has no memory so it completely resets on power off. There’s a few things I wish they change and that’s one of them. Pen and paper is an option at least as there aren’t too many settings to jot down

Just my 2 cents, but maybe you already know since these comments are 10 months old. If you look for it in RU-vid, you'll find a link to a website where you can control all nts1 parameter and also save them as well as load them back at need

That's true but those editors will only edit the parameters on the Nts1 that send there data via midi CCs which unfortunately isn't all of them. It's a shame, I hope Korg update that eventually

Thanks for this ... I keep referring to it. On the most recent visit, I wanted to find out what the Alt/B knob does for 'waves'. My own experiments lead me to the conclusion that even after changing everything on the sub-menus (wave a/b, mixes etc) there is still no function associated with Alt/B, and I can't find anything in your video to contradict that. Am I right, or did I miss something ?

No problem, thanks very much for watching. Yes you're right, as far as I can tell it does nothing. Some of the custom oscillators I've tried like Poly88 do use that setting but this doesn't seem to be one of them

Hi Chris, You don't happen to know if there's a midi cc number for this deeper "custom osc" parameter select (hold OSC+TYPE) and edit (B)? I've got them for every other parameter but not this one and it would be really useful to be able to access these without menu diving.

@@ChrisLodyMusic it is a shame. Definitely worth having. I set up a controller map with all cc numbers. Nothings worked. Maybe there's an NRPN or something tucked away. Have asked a couple of developers to see if theres anything in the SDK which gives a clue. If I get the answer I'll be sure to let you know.

@@ChrisLodyMusic I contacted Korg and asked about Sysex or NRPNs but they said there's no info currently available. The guys at Sinevibes thought there might be clues in the SDK documentation for the other korg models.

So the ADSR has controls for the Attack and Release with a preset amount of Decay and Sustain, the AHR goes up to the max level at the Attack rate and stays there until the note is released then goes down at the Release rate, the AR goes up and down without holding at the max level, AR LOOP is the same but will loop over continuously, then OPEN is on constantly. Hope that helps.

If you set the LFO to shape does it move back and forth between A and B?

So with the LFO, holding Osc and turning A sets the LFO speed, holding Osc and turning B assigns the type and amount of modulation. Anticlockwise assigns the LFO to pitch whereas clockwise assigns it to the shape parameter on the oscillator, that is whatever the chosen oscillator type has on knob A as an option. @@ChrisLodyMusic Yes, what I was trying to ask was what "shape" amounts to on the WAV osc. From what you wrote, I guess it affects just the A side of the wavetable. Or maybe not? I'll find out when I start messing with it myself I suppose!

Just checked and you're right, LFO assigned to shape moves back and forth from wavetable A and B.

Chris, or anyone else, I wonder if you could help me,. While messing around with the Sound Librarian software I've managed to clear the Waves oscillator from my NTS-1 and would like to get it back! Any ideas?

You should be able to recover that yes. The librarian comes with a copy of the Waves oscillator so you should be able to reinstall it. I’m not at my computer but there’s an option top left that’s something like Install User Unit or something. Click on that and the default menu location for it should appear and you can add it from there

With the current firmware, as far as I know it’s not possible. CC’s for those controls aren’t listed in the manual and they don’t send midi when they’re moved either so we’re currently in a position of having to program them manually every time. It’s a shame because it limits it’s external programmability quite a bit. Hopefully they’ll tweak that eventually

These don't respond to midi CCs like the rest of the synth. I spoke with Korg to get Sysex info for them but they were unable to help.

Without the touchstrip connected at all do you mean? Should do yeah as it only creates a voltage when pressed and you can use it over midi anyway

@@ChrisLodyMusic that was my plan, yes, plus it looks silly. I want to put a skin/overlay on my NTS when it arrives next month, so there doesn't need to be a big hole on the front. (for those who want to do the same: no I did not find a skin yet, will just use a nice postcard)

You should find a copy of it comes with the Nts1 Librarian in whatever is the default directory it opens when you go to load a custom file. I'm not at the computer right now or I'd be more specific, let me know if that helps
