Hands down the best learning efoil video for learning. I'm so stoked now. I just finished my lesson. The foot pivot is key. Also getting the board plaining without nosing up with forward weight. Everything in this video is extremely valuable. Practice on the beach standing up. The foot pivot. Touch and goes kneeling. It is all here. Thanks to you and your team for this excellent video. I can't thank you enough. I'm age 61 and I feel much younger now.

I can just see myself on one of these on the water.. ahhh the Freedom 😍🫣

Great stuff! However, I would encourage you do revisit your battery protocol...for optimal health, lithium batteries shouldn't be kept at the extremes: too highly charged or too drained. By bleeding the charge to Extra Low every session you are actually decreasing the lifespan of your batteries in a double whammy: the bleeding process and being stored in a super low state of charge between uses.
@DamienLeroyYouTube

You are correct and thank you for your feedback! I choose to do it for safety reasons.
@Pensivata

I am in the electric vehicle battery business - and I concur that by draining your battery to the lowest power - and leaving it without recharging it - will massively shorten the battery life. There are other ways to be safe, if that is your concern.
@R00063Rt
@R00063Rt 2 года назад
@@DamienLeroyRU-vid great video thank you very much. ## But the battery: it isn't actually safe to keep the battery in a "very low" state. Maybe it's ok for the ride home and recharge in an hour. But if you keep it there until the next day and for the 10h the trip home or you leaving it there two weeks until foiling again, this can cause one issue lithium batteries have. In the "very low" state there are "metal spikes" growing inside the battery - these can be the reason for bad things happening, the next time the battery is charged. Modern electronic prevents batteries from dropping too low, but the safest way is to keep the battery cool and between 30-70%.

This is a brilliant video. Really thorough on technique, getting the patience in and stressing the first hour - don't get cocky- message. Yes, safety is boooooring but it cannot be mentioned enough. Being on the water is great, but as an experienced sailor on everything from a Laser dinghy up to a 40 meter heavy metal beast, I can tell you that one of the most succesfull ways to die young is to underestimate the risks when being on the water.

Agree with fireproof case for lithium batteries. However, cells become unstable at high or low voltages. Best to store at a nominal voltage and be very careful about heat and mechanical impacts. I say this from loads of experience with LIFE, LIPO, other Li Ion batteries. At low voltages I have seen a ton of cell swelling and some catastrophic ruptures. Besides that, it was the best video of its kind on efoils. I would fell comfortable trying one now. Thanks again.

Sebastian, Choppy conditions are very hard to learn in or are more challenging for sure. If you can find some flat water to get your balance going and get comfortable, get a good feeling on the efoil first. Then your choppy area will be fine later but to learn in it is always a little more challenging.

Do you have any experience or information on using the folding prop on flat water? Specifically, I've got the pro size and live on a lake. I would like to kick up my already stellar enjoyment by possibly catching errant wakes, but I don't have a sense of exactly how much glide I could get with a feathering blade (certainly more than what I have now!). As you know, it is a very expensive add-on. Thanks so much - you do a great job and I point fellow enthusiasts to this site regularly.

Bill the folding prop does a lot and changes the whole ride... More to the part that you take the prop guard off. That has so much drag and really changes the ride when you take it off. Makes it more dangerous as if you fall you will land on the open prop.....The glide is for sure more but remember you are on a 50-60 pound board. It helps a ton to have a HA wing for sure for the perfect set up to glide on boat wakes..... Will give you the perfect combo..

@@DamienLeroyRU-vid Thank you, Damien. I'm considering a HA 170 (I'm 5'7" 150 lbs and have close to 40 hours on my Pro board) - do you think this is the best size for wake surfing vs. the 200? I won't be riding the larger waves directly behing a boat since the intention is to just hop on whatever wake passes me by - there are wakeboard boats everywhere. With the folding prop and minus the guard it seems like I might need a leash since I presume without the drag from the regular prop, the board will keep going for a distance after I fall? Do others do this? Thanks again for the great resource.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 3 года назад
@@billlambert2092 Bill, I don't believe you need a leash as the board as it will stop when you let go of the remote. Also safe to not have the board come flying back at you. You just swim over to it after your fall. The 170 for you weight is epic but it is high performance wing for sure. The 200 will be a little easier all the way around. You can not go wrong either way! Most would do the 200 but my favorite wing is the 170HA... :)

@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Год назад
The 5'9 would have been the right size for you in your first goes. Truth is there is plenty of power but takes time to learn the full basics and safety of it to be efficient and stay on foil the whole time. They are fun!

Good morning Damien I thank you for all your advice, we will try to do it. I wanted to ask you again what is the best position, where should the foil go on the board in front of the middle or behind if you are learning.
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 3 года назад
If you set it back on the board it is the best for learning as it will keep you forward on the board making the foil harder to pop you up. The further forward you put it in the board is more likely to foil fast. So back in the board when you are learning is the safest....

Hi Damien! Other than rinsing the board thoroughly, is there any maintenance or servicing that needs to be done and if so how often? Thanks 🙏🏻 I’ve heard that other board manufacturers have there boards serviced at regular intervals - which costs one a little extra $$$
@DamienLeroyYouTube

Case the only real maintenance if you keep it in nice condition is adding reel x or non corrosion oil to all the cables oftern for extra protection to corrosion! Other than that not really anything more than keeping the battery safe and always using the bag covers. Thats it really!

Don't know if you are monitoring comments but I have a question. I am 230-240lbs depending. The board I demoed today felt really small so I decided with instructors nod that I wanted the 5'9 board. I'm not sure on wings though. I thought the 300/48 would be the way to go given my weight. What would you suggest for a heavier guy just looking to cruise. I don't really care about agility. I want stability over anything else. What wing combo would you suggest?

Hi Damien! I need your advice on battery charging please 🙏 Lotsa professionals are saying that lithium batteries should not be charged 100%. In fact 80 - 90% is ideal for the longevity of the battery. If that is the case, is there any way to tell that the battery is at a certain percentage or can I only check that once it is plugged in and my remote is connected? Thanks 😊 again
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 2 года назад
Not sure on the not charting 100% honestly. The only way to get to say 80-90% would be to charge it and only charge all the lights but the last 1 maybe 2 leave un charged.There are 8 lights so the last one should be around 80-90% charged. My thoughts.

OK I'm in, I'll take two. Hey Damien, I think you should call tech support on that battery advice. Most manufacturers shop lithium batteries at half charge for safety. I don't think your correct about discharging the battery. I think you actually want a full charge. I could be wrong about this. I do high voltage linework so it's not the same as low voltage electronics but I did go to school. My gut says at least half charge is safest and full charge is best for longevity of the battery. But go with what they manufacture recommends.
@DamienLeroyYouTube

Richard you are right, This was filmed over a year ago. Battery best practices! UPDATE: Keeping the battery cool … don’t leave it in the sun. Charge it in a cool place. Storing the battery at 30-50% charge zone for best longevity of a battery.

Everyone has a different learning curve don't stress you are doing nothing wrong. I would slow your movements down. Try adjusting your remote to just be steady on the throttle or full throttle at say level 3 or maybe 4. All depends on your size and board. Goal is to not use your throttle so you can learn the shifting of your hips. Use your hips to shift your weight not the throttle! I hope that helps. You got this. Just takes time...
