When I grew up the holy grail of casting reels was the Abu-Garcia Ambassador 5500C. I ordered one from Johnny Morris when his catalog was on news print. I still have it. You need to switch the centrifugal brakes around now and again, but it was a great reel. I’ve only used spinning for the last couple of decades. I may have to try out that new Shimano technology. My wife and I are in the process of moving from Islamorada to the “Forgotten Coast” and are looking forward to learning a new area.
After 52 years of spinning; i bit the bullet and got the 150DC. Wow. It took a lot of faith the first time I trusted the computer. Holy crap, it works!
*I love it **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I’m using it for my 1.0 Crankbaits and small Jerkbait. Paired with my Assassin. Works great, feels great. Would definitely recommend this setup.*
You're spot on as usual. $ on the reel not the rod, especially us bank beaters who crawl thru mangrove trails to honey holes. The rod becomes a consumable with a limited lifespan. I don't even use live shrimp on a spinner, haven't in decades.
use spinning reel setup cause i was taught not to ignore what works in a given situation...prefer using bc for most stuff...yea your right i do not have a 1/4 ounce spoon in the box...to me thats looking for a "professional over run." but never say never...old c3 is a good spinning reel...lots of great info on this video
Great job keeping it real. As I've grown into fishing 200 plus days a year, I've finally been able to appreciate how different rods, reels, lines, etc can improve my success and enjoyment. Great series!
I use a classic curado with 10lb braid medium light rod and cast 1/8 baits with very little thumb pressure for small mouths. Rod action is everything with lighter baits. Great video!
I have a Chronarch G paired with a medium power Teramar that use for pwer fishing 3 inch paddle tails and love it. Just added an Aldebaran MGL for an awesome medium-light trout setup!
Got the 150 DC for my b-day in January and I've just been bank casting much of this month with all sorts of lures just to get ready for on the water use... and I really like this reel. That 'SCREAM' it produces is addicting.!!! I'm ready for my on water trials and a hookup. Thanks Capt and as always Tight Lines and Full Limits To Ya. 🎣
@@flatsclasscharters I've use Shimano reel for years and still use a Shimano Curado 200-CU (maybe not any longer 😄) and yes sir I'm ready for a Galveston West Bay Red to put this DC thru its paces. I've definitely seen reels evolve over my 58yrs living on the Texas Gulf Coast. God bless and see ya Monday night.
Well damn...the last time I was this excited about adding gear/info to my arsenal I was listening to a podcast with Luke Donat and Gary Hurley (Fisherman's Post) about flounder fishing. I was PUMPED and went on to have a pretty good "season" on flatties. Now I MUST go see Tex for the latest, greatest, C.A.-approved Shimano baitcaster. 😄 Great info, sir! Great energy, too! Maybe we'll catch of glimpse of ya hear in SENC again some time soon. ✌️
If you could only have one or two rods combos for inshore, what would it be, Im not a professional so I cant have 18 rods at any given moment to pick from! Cool videos!~~! Tight Lines Capt.
I have GLF rods paired with Curado 201s…never thought about using a DC in saltwater. The one down side is throwing 1/4oz lures into the wind. I’m going to have to look at the DC reels
Raised on spinning. Love them. Rod in right hand/crank on left. Why do most baitcasters switch hands on every cast? Why not use left hand baitcaster reel?
The biggest drawback of bait casters is they don't make that sweet drag sound a spinning reel does when a fish is taking line! I love that sound! lol. When my Chronarch bites the dust the Curado DC will be tops on my list., although I might get a BFS just for winter time sight fishing.
You said the rod your using in the video is a med action GLF rod.....can you tell me the specs on that rod. ie: length etc. Thanks for the info....love Shimano
I bought my Curados back in the 90s when I was predominately fishing the Potomac River for bass, and now you tell me i can fish them in the salt? Where you been all my life? I've been fishing spinning gear exclusively for inshore/flats. I guess that needs to change. Got a couple of Scorpions I picked up in Japan about 15 years ago, great for smaller lures for bass. I also have a couple of the workhorse Ambassadeurs. Guess I gotta give them all a chance in the salt.
They do make one. I've had it for over 10 years, maybe closer to 15. It was discontinued a few years ago, but they're bringing it back. For now, it's only in Japan, but it's as expensive as the top model reels though, so it's not in the same price range as this curado DC
@@flatsclasscharters I remember WCC and Spanish Fly with Jose Wejebe coming on about the same time. I always looked forward to their fishing trips. Sad about losing Jose.
I keep telling myself not to learn baitcasters because of money but they look fun. Does the gear ratio matter or do you have a suggestion? I see on Amazon they sell it as high gear or extra high gear. Do you ever use them to throw live bait with?
I guess a baitcasting reel is great while standing dry on a deck. Convince me it's possible for casting reel to survive the harsh conditions of surfcasting in hip deep water on a sandbar.
I like starting with 30lb. But if you need heavier bite section like in snook fishing for example. Then tie on 2.5’ of 25lb mono leader then add a 10” length of 40lb mono leader that way the lure keeps it action and you have the security of heavier leader.
Love Your show; I truly have learned ALOT from you; HOWEVER, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree just a little. Let me say respectfully you have hook and loss more fish than I have hook so far in my life. And Like you I didn't have the Internet or RU-vid. I grew up in the South Bronx watching William Conrad walking a beach with Penn 706z surf casting gear in the opening credit of Outdoor life tv show. If you take most if not all of the High End bait casters sold from 1975 to 1985; most of them could not effectively Throw a 1/16 , 1/8 , 3/16 or 1/4 oz. lure Because as I understood it, They were never initially engineered to throw those light lures; thus the reason why each lure had to be " calibrated " to the reel before use; something that's not done with spinning gear. Today, Yes you are able to throw those lures because of an electronic device incorporated into the reel. However; if you Remove the electronic aspect from the reel that adjust and or compensate for Human and environmental conditions, do you still have a reel worth $250 dollars ?? in other words; without the electronic aspect, how much better would this bait caster be to those high end models sold in the 70's and 80's ?? .. Again love your show..
Love my slx dc don’t buy curado dc not worth the money my buddy has a curado dc and he said there is no difference and he would rather just buy the slx dc
Lots of manufacturers produce good freshwater gear, but, Shimano has been the “Standard” for decades in the higher end, Saltwater category, w/ good corrosion resistant hardware and tight tolerances. Finally, other manufactures like Diawa are stepping up their game producing compariibly better products
Well he is a Shimano pro staffer... so what did you expect? Also the info still works on ANY baitcaster. Shoot, I throw a 13 fishing conceptz and the basic info still applies..
