I use a similar technique to you and when I was a apprentice 20 years ago here in nz ppg dominates the paint industry . We got taught this thru all our training . Two medium cover coats and when it starts evaporating do a couple dry technique coats to eliminate the mottle . Those colours always tend to mottle . I’m a self employed refinisher and have employed many painters and yes everybody paints differently . Love your Chanel and keep up the good content
We used Spies Hi Tec 480 water what we did was do a drop coat at a further distance at a little bit of lower pressure while the base was still wet .Worked all the time especially on silvers
I just went through this last week with a Gunmetal gray metallic I can't remember if I was using a 1.4 or 1.5. I had not seen this video until now and relieved to see I did the right thing; which was remain calm and back off on the wetness and give more flash time.
Great tips , I like the way you point out this is what works for me , and you may have a different way . So true , many techniques , some work and some work better . Temperature, humidity, air pressure, so many factors . What works in Texas may not work in your area . 9:13
Great tutorial on the mottling this video helps by the way I always thought that it's silver you have to wach out for more thank you for the tips kandy man take good care
I have tiger stripping on my front fender. Im going to try this in the morning only thing is I dont have a spray gun. Im using the rustoleum 5 In one spray can with the wide spray. Ill try the low output setting on it from a bit of a distance and see if it works. I know buy a gun, Its just not in the budget right now. Also that is the color I want to paint my truck but leave it a matte finish. What is the color or do you have a link to where I can get. When I get a real paintjob that is what I want. Love your videos Im learning. Thank you.
Some say to keep pressure down at 15psi, some say to blast it with a 35psi super wide low paint mist, some say it doesnt matter its the gun your using, some say its because of the temps and humidity and some say its just because your psinting with too heavy of coats.. heard is brcause of dry times between coats.. even heard its because your primer is the incorrect typehuu
Did my first spray and encountered lots of problems. First I’m in south Florida, 😅About 4 hours south of you. As I was spraying, water was dripping out my Tyvek suit. Because I was going forward I didn’t see it until I hit the middle and I started to switch sides. Wrapped my wrists with paper towels and it was solved but I got some minor damage. On the 3rd coat of base the gun stopped spraying paint. There was paint in the gun but it’s not coming out. I stopped at 2 coats and cleaned out the gun. I noticed the vent was blocked, duh. I didn’t have anymore paint since I only bought a quart. It could of used 1 more coat of base but I already dumped it, another mistake. Should of poured it back in the empty can. The clear went on fine but I stopped at 2 coats. I should of finished the quart so I could safely sand away the minor orange peel. Even with sanding and guide coat I still missed some low spots that now look huge. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rR-c177vp4Q.html
Yea it is hot out there. cover looked OK....better than before. Good cheap gun is Vevor website. I did a review. Cheap but OK. better is the Porphus. now that is a great gun. Cheap guns are really hard to get a good finish. FYI.
I don't know if you will agree but in solvent paints especially metallic I had that problem and would always have to do a control coat after just doing different things I started backing my fan pattern back a little and eliminated that and having to do a control coat
The best way I found by far is 2 to 3 light dust coats at low PSI and then the third final coat I lay moderately wet over all of that... and 50% of the time it comes out perfect every time.
Another great job! Why are using 3M gun for the base instead of other high end guns you have? Is it better that DV1 base or IWATA? Or is your only solid colors gun? Thank you.
I don't change them very often. I've never had one go bad. I change it after a lot of use, just because I want to. The old 3m guns only lasted a few jobs. The new performance gun is awesome .
man, thank you ill try this on monday. I painted two cars this week, metallic greys and theres a bunch of cloudy spots. Just stressed out so muchhh. i hope theyre not redos
I remember back in the early days of water-based automotive paints... when Auto-X and everyone else were advertizing how much better they lay out. Nothing has changed... it's still a hassle. On the flip side, tiger stripes in metallics are far less of a problem with water-based paints. Not sure how it helps.
Since some jobs I spray are single stage metallics with an integrated clear, I will sometimes get blotchyness on a panel even after cross coating the crap out of it to get some gloss after the last coat. This tip will definitely help when I do another one!!
Hi, sorry for comment an old video. Just thought when you spraying the 2nd coat light, are you dialling in the fluid to how many turns in? Or you always spray it on full fluid with only low pressure.
Im shortly going to be respraying a new front bumper and both side front fenders, for my car... Ive sprayed things like BMX frames and alloy wheels in the past, But now i want to make sure i spray my car parts perfectly... My car is a Dark blue metallic.. (Z168 / 4XU Metro Blue to be exact)... I have mainly used ebay cheapy HVLP guns in the past, But bought myself a Devilbiss DV1 with a DV1 B+ aircap, to give me every best chance of a perfect job... Any tips on how to spray it to look perfect?! I usually spray at around 29psi at around 6-7 inches from panel, for non-metallics... What would you recommend for my metallic paint bumper / fender job? Same, more or less pressure than for solid colours? same distance to panel?!?! further? closer? 2k paint... if thats any help.. I am also using SLOW reducer... I absolutely need for this to turn out nice.... It sounds silly, But its a pride, sort of thing... I am getting laughed at by family, for attempting it myself, instead of paying a professional to just do it... I get peer pressured ALOT. etc.. Its just the way my family is.... They like to put me down for everything i do wrong, but i like to learn new things So i absolutely need this to turn out good.. Thankyou
Spray the base at around 12 to 15 psi coverage coats 8 inches away .once coverage is good, back away from the panel to about 18 inches at around 10 psi and give it a light coat to lay out the metallic even . For clear 20 to 23 psi hope this helps 💪💪
Good video.. Thank you. I have a question maybe you can answer for me. Not just in your videos but others too, I have noticed that when spraying clear coat, there seems to be a lot more overspray. Is it just because its clear, that you can see the pattern better than with base, or is it that there is more overspray with clear. I have never shot clear, so i don't know ... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again for the great video...
Thank you! I have to spray in driveway.. can you take a look at my new color on my last video and give me any tips? I sprayed their bright green metalic before without tiger stripes or mottling but this color is darker much darker.. thanks!
Hey candy man with solvent base if um not getting complet coverage by the forat coat can i do 2 meduim coats followed by the control coat? And should i be using thw slowest reducer possible for both?
@@kandyman5315 Thanks for the great content, alot of good information on your channel. Would having a psi higher than 15 lbs on the iwata lph400 at the inlet cause mottling ?
Hi kandy man i painted a car 🚗 bonnet or hood in the us 🇺🇸 i was using solvent paint i put it on and next thing it was full of streaks and mottling i was really annoyed i message your mate Brian of paint society he said mite off been the wrong reducer there sold me MIPA fast reducer should havd slow
With the problem colors like grey I always spray one thin layer and then another wet layer with a lot overlapping . No any mottling . And quick as well
@@kandyman5315 you are probably the best there is if not at least top three online when it comes to paint work. I however I am a mobile unit who mainly does bumpers blends and such using mini or midi gun and charging very little Compare to insurance claim jobs . I was looking for a pressure adjustment or maybe different nozzle size . No one is really complaining I am the one who sometimes sees the difference and it drives me crazy 👍 Keep up the good work your channel is amazing and very educational and very helpful thank you
