How to eliminate stuttering and choppy playback in Kdenlive with this simple configuration

Good tip. I use the timeline preview feature instead of proxy. Same concept as proxy.

5yrs later and still useful, awesome no need to create a new profile, just select a GPU encoder and it will do in most cases, you can compare proxy profiles efficiency with a build in benchmark also side note, save before you do it because it crashed when i selected a profile and messed up the whole timeline with invalid text

i really appreciate it, i hope this works. i do find it hard to believe my ryzen 5 3600 can't playback a simple 1080p video from my phone... but here we are, the preview plays back at 9 fps. :D hope this works

thank you so much ! although mine is not written as yours, my default proxy is " -vf yadif,scale=960:-2 -qscale 3 -vcodec mjpeg -acodec pcm_s16le " and I truly am a beginner. I tried remplacing scale=960:-2 by scale=960:-4 , things are better but still not perfect

I was going to go on a rant about how much Kdenlive pisses me off that has these stuttering problems when playing what's on the timeline when I've never once dealt with that on any other editing software I have ever used in my life. It turns out that what is causing the stuttering might not even be the fault of Kdenlive at all in my case which means that fortunately I have nothing to be mad about. The one thing I'm still a little upset about although actually Kdenlive has helped me sort of get over that is that 10 years ago I bought what was then the newest version of several Adobe editing programs. The CS6 version of Premiere pro, photoshop, after effects, and encore. However despite the fact that I swear I owned the software that I bought which included some kind of CD key which actually I don't know maybe if I could find that somehow I could get it reinstated but probably not, but anyways Adobe took all my software away from me because it's not the newest version. Knowing that why would I ever buy what currently is the newest version knowing that 10 years from now they'll just take it away from me to try to make me buy what in the future is the newest version? Terrible! Fortunately Kdenlive is free and has some pretty great features so that has kind of helped me get over this although I still miss my Premiere Pro because there were so many amazing features on that that made editing so amazing not to mention using Adobe dynamic link to connect it to photoshop and after effects to put those on premiere. Anyways I was dealing with a stuttering problem today on Kdenlive and I actually was really pissed off at my software for behaving this way whenever I played something on my timeline. So unfortunately because I have a lot of debts and it's expensive where I live as the results I work doordash 7 days a week so I don't always have the time to do video editing so as the result since I'm traveling and I'm in my car a lot, sometimes I take my laptop with me and if there's some down time where I'm just not getting any doordash orders for a longer period, sometimes I'll actually be trying to edit my video projects right here in the car. It's in this car that I've noticed the stuttering issue. Never had that issue when I'm editing at home. As I was watching this video and actually delivering doordash orders I randomly decided to start playing what was on my timeline Kdenlive and everything was playing smoothly. This was when the car was turned off. I turned my car back on and it was stuttering again. I figured out what the problem was. You see in order to make sure that my laptop doesn't have a dead battery while I'm out I plug it in the car. Now my previous plug-in hybrid I used to have actually had electrical outlets to just plug it directly into, but unfortunately due to some stupidity and also bullshit I ended up totaling that amazing car so now I have a full on gas car that is actually pretty fuel efficient although I still wish I had that plug-in hybrid, but anyways this car does not have those electrical outlets so I had to buy a power strip that has a carplug to plug into well you know the cigarette lighter or the carport or whatever you want to call it in the car, and this device will only charge my laptop or whatever devices I plug into it as long as the car is turned on because that's the only way that this thing will have any power because it will be able to plug into the electricals of the car and charge devices so that helped me realize that the stuttering literally only happens when I am charging the laptop in my car. Something is going on with the power strip that is somehow messing with functions of the computer because actually when I charge my laptop at home and I'm editing by having it plugged into the wall this doesn't happen. So from now on when I'm editing in the car during down time it's quite clear that when I'm doing editing I just need to turn off the power strip and stop the computer from charging with it so that the stuttering doesn't happen. Only have it charge when I'm not using the computer or when I'm not using Kdenlive.

This really works well, although on newer kdenlive version it's a little bit different, still most of the things shown is also in the newer versions

Hi, some settings have changed with the new versions of Kdenlive. For example, MPEG isn't an option anymore, only MPEG2. So I'm blaming these changes on the fact your tutorial didn't really help me :( Now actually it's not only still very choppy but the audio is all messed up and it hears like static (whileas before it was still normal albeit choppy af). Any ideas?
