Over the last couple of years, I have engraved thousands of mugs and other drinkware. I've recently gotten more flask requests and decided that it would be a good idea to share the tricks that I learned along the way.
I hope that sharing these tricks will make it easier for others to avoid some mistakes that I made early on.

Great video - favorite color flask...probably blue!
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 4 года назад
My favorite is always blue. I don’t really give other colors the chance.

Thank you for the information. Haven't done color ones before. Inkscape ver 1.0 now has extensions that can import .cdr and .ai files if they don't have access to Illustrator or Corel. The jig idea was priceless.

Great video, red one for me, I like how you explained how to deal with the curvature like that, I was wondering how you solve that problem on the laser
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 4 года назад
There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to working with curved surfaces like this.

Orange! Do you think if you focused the beam at about the halfway point of the curve it would work? That way the top isn't as out-of-focus.
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 4 года назад
I’ve tried that in the past. The issue I ran into was that it ends up not engraving all the way through the powder coating out on the edges. With leather ones it may be fine that way. It’s the powder coated ones where you’re trying to get through that layer that it ended up having to be that way.
@BearMaked
@BearMaked 4 года назад
@@MakerExperiment Ah, makes sense. Even the way you did it the "high spot" in the middle of the flask doesn't look any different from the rest. At least in the video it all looks like pretty crisp lines.

Bear Maked with a powder coated one, it looks great. Leather may not work the same.

Bear Maked... that is what I do on an Epilog Fusion 40 120 Watt... it works great on sides and middle. I find if I focus on the outer edge, the heat from the laser discolors the stainless from too much heat.

Trevor... can you demo a Powder Coated JDS 15 oz. handled Coffee Mug on the rotary? Do you still have your Fusion? If so, can you demo it on that laser? Thanks...

If I ever have someone want that mug I can.

What wattage is your laser, and what speed / power did you use?
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment Год назад
It’s a 60 watt. The details are all in the description but I think it was 100% power and 70% speed.

If it was done with two passes, one focussed on the centre and one focussed on the outer edge would it make much difference?
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 2 года назад
I’ve never tried that to be honest. I think it would end up kind of wonky but I could be wrong.

is it possible to do a bottle without a roller?
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 4 года назад
Doncar06 technically yes if you only engraved a thin width the length of the bottle. The issue starts when you try to engrave down the curved surface where it’s no longer focused properly. It’s not really possible to engrave around a mug without a roller. But if you are only engraving maybe 1” wide it may be worth a shot.

Do you have a recommendation for a laser engraver that you can use at home?

@MakerExperiment

Robyn James if you’re just wanting to use it occasionally, I’d start with the K40. If you’re wanting to run more production level runs, I’d increase your budget.
@xR56x
@xR56x 3 года назад
How much did you charge for one?
@MakerExperiment
@MakerExperiment 3 года назад
Rock it honesty depends on quantity. If you’re only doing one, I’d make sure it’s worth your time. Your pricing should be calculated based on your cost and your labor. My rates most likely aren’t the same as any other person. My suggestion is to calculate your cost for machine time, labor, and overhead and calculate the cost that way. Just giving you a price is kind of misleading as the prices change based on quantity.
