Yes, you can EQ a cheap Shure SM58 vocal microphone to sound insanely good in a mix. Don't believe me? Watch this video.
You can achieve 1000% professional results in almost ANY space with the most affordable gear on the market.
Anyone who tells you otherwise is either full of it, trying to sell you stuff or has no real-world experience working with audio professionally.
This is especially true for vocals. Most people don't realize just how easy it is to produce album-quality vocals.
When it comes to producing top-notch vocals, here's what you DON'T need:
An expensive condenser microphone

To record in a "treated" room

A high-end mic preamp (your inexpensive 1-channel usb interface is more than good enough!)

Analog outboard gear

Overpriced plugins

Do yourself a favor and save your money.
In this tutorial, I share, in detail, how I mix a raw vocal performance recorded through a cheapo Shure SM58 in an untreated room.
Spoiler Alert: It ain't complicated.
The SM58 was plugged directly into my affordable USB interface which was plugged into my outdated 2012 Macbook Pro laptop. In other words...
A budget home studio rig.

Solid information, presented in an organized fashion - as we have come to expect from a Torres production. Perfect for those of us who prefer basic audio gear - without all the bells, whistles, and fashion casualty equipment.

Huge thumbs up for this quality tutorial ! Would you mind doing the same for extreme screaming vocals ? Like Deathcore/deathmetal low growls, high pitched screams, midscreams etc.. I'm struggling with it.. would be great 😊🙏🏻

I've read that Bon Jovi recorded almost an entire album on a SM58. From that day I realized that it's the Indian, not the arrow. That mean that it's the vocalist the one who provides amazing vocals, not a fancy mic. If your vocals rock, they will rock with a 58 too.

I used a dynamic mic for the first time the other day While recording rap vocals It felt so unnatural to cut so much of the lows, I spent a week messing around with the EQ before landing on something very similar to yours, I didn't Cut as much of the Low-mids because I was Using A Lazy rap style vocals and I raised the highs a few DB on mine it just sounded better to me.. But thanks this gave me verification that my Eqing wasn't a complete waste of time..

I been using my shure sm58 more then my sm7b to record gutturals/growls, I’m still a amateur when it comes to mixing but some reason my low vocals seem to sound better on the sm58 I’m just confused to why this is? I just get a very boxy muffled sound on the sm7b no matter what I do.
@schneebly8485

it could be to do with the slight eq curve on the sm58. there’s a slight mid increase

Bobby you always point at the fact that it's not about the expensive gear to get professional mixes. Maybe it's a dumb question, but why is there high-priced equipment if "one" doesn't need it? Ok, I just know, but is the difference that huge? Some producers could save a lot of money then...I hope you know what I mean. Thanks again for the content.

Stupid question but would you ever go even more basic than that for a microphone? I'm trying to get my ep out that I wrote a while ago and recorded some scratch vocals through laptop mic and the screams didn't sound bad but singing sounded terrible (I might just be a terrible singer). Was debating buying a dirt cheap mic just for this project but unsure?
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording 2 года назад
Great question! I'd say it's worth it to invest in an SM57 or 58 if you wanna record vocals. They're low-cost and can be used for many different things (guitar amps, acoustic guitars, drums etc.). The issue with the laptop mic is that it's gonna be too far away from your face when you're singing. Hope that helps!

Randy Blythe from Lamb of God uses SM58 mics for most of his vocals in studio. He uses the SM7b for some vocals that he wants to stand out a bit more, as well as for background vocals, and an SM57 for vocals that are going to be intentionally distorted, bit crushed, or lo-fi effected.
@regdenee
@regdenee 2 года назад
If I remember correctly he also cups the SM58 to simulate the "live" vocal sound. It sounds sick on the albums.

@Infernal 777 personally, I tend to do what I call a "partial cup" or "MC cup" live, where I just have the 3 fingers around the screen ball to not knock into my mouth (I once chipped a tooth during a band audition lol) and to help with the stuff cupping the mic does a bit, but not so much that it makes an omnidirectional feedback machine, and also so that with screaming it causes a bit of capsule overdrive, but clean singing comes through unaffected, even belting and stuff like that. This allows me to do everything from Dio and King Diamond to Blue Swede to pop music to full on false fold and fry screaming vocals.
@needsLITHIUM
@needsLITHIUM 2 года назад
@Infernal 777 in studio I double mic. I have a dynamic broadcast mic front and center, then I have an LDC off axis and to one side. Screams get the dynamic mic, singing gets the condenser, and quieter faux screams (cookie monster/doctor claw) or spoken word gets both. Chorus gets both, with hard panning, so it makes it sound really wide. Also, for black metal, it works great as a dry wet setup, with the dynamic mic getting the bulk of the volume to the sound, and then the condenser gets all of the delay and reverb and atmospherics.
@needsLITHIUM
@needsLITHIUM 2 года назад
@Infernal 777 I originally had the condenser for all vocals, and for my voice, I liked the broadcast dynamic better for screams. For belting and clean vocals the LDC can't be beat, though. I have a handheld SDC that I got on a whim, the side address LDC I already mentioned, and a few different dynamic mics, handheld, broadcast, etc. Lol when I'm not live, I use my handheld vocal dynamics for guitar cabs when I'm recording, almost always paired with a sennheiser e609, and it sounds pretty killer. I got a 57 for guitar years ago, and while I still use it if the other mic options don't do it for me, but at this point it basically just sits there most of the time lmao. My point is to experiment and see what works best for the application at hand. If I were recording someone else's voice I might do what you recommended, or just use the broadcast and be done with it, or use a different mic or set of mics altogether.

Buddy, the SM58 is inexpensive, but it's not cheap. You're talking about one of the most legendary microphones out there, not some $5 piece of shit you got off Amazon made in the farthest reaches of China. The SM 58 was good enough for Zeppelin, AC/DC, Bruce Springsteen . . . the list goes on and on and on. It does not take much to make one of the most legendary mics ever sound sick. Genuinely confused how something that costs $100 is considered "cheap" when there are actual cheap options out there that would be far more interesting to make sound good.
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording 2 года назад
I agree 100%!! I couldn't live without my SM58's and SM57's. I'm sayings they're "cheap" when compared to studio condenser microphones that are $1000+. Unfortunately, many home studio owners think they need a high-end condenser microphone (and preamp) to achieve great vocal sounds and that's definitely not the case. You can do it with an SM58 and basic interface, which I'm proving in this video.

57s and 58s are made with an astoundingly high level of consistency in terms of both sounding matched and quality control. You don’t get that same assurance with a cheaper knockoff.

You talk about the SM58 & 57 being ‘cheap’.. And while they are affordable, they’re built like tanks and are arguably 2 of the most important microphones to ever be created! The amount of tracks those things have been featured on is mind boggling!

Amazing - this also really pointed out to me that you should not make full EQ choices using solo. The vocal sounded great in context, when in solo I'd have wanted to 'fill the space' by keeping the lower frequencies - and thus muddying the whole thing up! Great tutorial. I will use this very soon.
