Instructional video on how I personally like to euro-nymph for wild brown trout in Central Pennsylvania. In the video I go through a few techniques that I use. I also give tips and different tricks along the way. I go over things such as, gear, flies, rigging, reading water, and fishing different water types.
Please let me know what you think about the video. I plan on making some more "How To" videos in the near future.
Thank you for all of the love and support on the videos. I appreciate all of the love!

I am a teacher and an avid fly fisherman. Teaching, like fly fishing, is an art. I have seen tons of fly fishing videos, many by big name fly fishing companies. I can't think of many that are better than this one. The way that you present the information is spot on and the tips are all stuff that works. Keep up the good work!

Rod/reel combo with fishing kit as an emergency setup ru-vid.comUgkxntWMOZsO1Zfv-pdn_XuffEtNkTYAYu4Z recommend but started to use this every day. The rod is thick and seems durable. I keep it neatly tucked into a regular backpack all the time with my fishing gear, and can grab it anytime, put it on my back and go anywhere. I just read in another review that the rod length below the reel is adjustable as well, so I will try that too for even more portability. Probably the best setup I've ever owned. I lost the cap for the eyelets, but no big deal since I still have the black cloth sheath that came for the pole and I use that. Very portable and high quality.

So many of us do things similarly. Over the years (40 plus for me) fishing nymphs like this I'm still tweaking my set-up. I have several leader formulas, most with two sighters incorporated in them. I find I'm always analyzing my presentation to get the best drift. What I've seen is that some of the differences in set-up don't really provide a benefit other than a confidence factor; however, that confidence factor is very important. Good job, Dan.

Just learned this technique this weekend while Fishing Wolf Creek Hatchery stream in Kentucky. A very nice gentleman from England took the time to show me how to tie the tandem rig knot and how to follow the line back down just as you done. I was catching trout when no one else was. He showed me how to tie in the indicator line between the leader and tippet. The two colored indicator line made seeing the strikes easier. He gave me several feet of the indicator line. Now I’m back home looking for a spool of 5x indicator line. I’m new to trout fishing. I recently fished the Yellowstone, Beaverhead , Madison and several small creeks in Montana.
@GeorgeMcConnell-nq3vd
@GeorgeMcConnell-nq3vd 4 месяца назад
I have skipped steps 1 through 500. And just by my usual leaders and put a 4" spot of fluorescent orange or green spray paint at 3 feet and six feet above the tippet. I did a lot of nymph fishing with just a leader, no indicators of any kind just seat of the pants and caught trout but with the paint spots it's like taking candy from a baby.
@GeorgeMcConnell-nq3vd
@GeorgeMcConnell-nq3vd 4 месяца назад
One more thing that will put a trout on the hook when fishing with nymphs. Learn the tuck cast. A little tricky at first but some practice it will become easy. Have fun. From someone who's been fly fishing for 45 years.
@scamp7887
@scamp7887 4 года назад
great video, I personally just use my standard floating line with just about a foot out the tip of the rod for turn over. Then for the leader I use flouro for a foot then a sighter made from alternating Orange and yellow Dacron (bind splice loops on either end and double surgeon knotted sections) then 3 feet of flouro to a small barrel swivel then a tippet of around 18 inches. I attach the flies same as you. My system is free and made from stuff I already had. A lot of hard core Euro people will say my system isn't ideal but it works fantastic and is so much simpler than many people make it out to be.
@andrewpeterson5882
@andrewpeterson5882 3 года назад
There's no rules in fly fishing! People on the internet get so caught up on how to do things exactly "correct," meanwhile folks like you and me are out on the river putting trout in the net and learning more and more every day. Never tried a dacron sighter, that's a great idea, will have to pull some out and give it a try.
@scamp7887
@scamp7887 3 года назад
@@andrewpeterson5882 I actually like the Dacron better because the blind splice on either end is a nice, sleek connection. I also leave the tag ends long on the surgeon knots connecting the sighter sections so that I can watch those for movement as I'm tight lining. Worth a try!

Hey Dan! Very good tutorial for Euro-Nymphing. I don’t necessarily do Euro or use the mono rig but essentially the first part of my drift method is the same. What I incorporate in most of my drifts is in the second part of my drift, the swing and then just letting your rig hang downstream at the end of the drift for 5-8 seconds. I catch so many fish in the last part of my drift it’s ridiculous. The bad part though is a lot of fish are barely hooked that a lot get off, but I do land a lot also. Incorporating the swing and the hang, I feel, adds up your percentage of hookups and gets the most outta each drift. You definitely have to have more patience with this method, it’s not like running and gunning of Euro or high sticking, but it’s awesome when that fish smashes it right at the end when you just think your drift is done. Again, nice job buddy! 👍🏻

PA WOODS N WATER thanks for the comment! I normally let my flies swing downstream as well and let them lift. Thanks for watching and commenting I really appreciate it!

Great stuff guys, good info and clear instructions. You said you use the pline flouroclear. Any opinion on that vs the 100% flouro? I saw you said the flouroclear has better abrasion resistance in a comment. Does it sink as fast as 100% flouro?
@HardwayOutdoors
@HardwayOutdoors 4 года назад
I have used the 100% flouro P-line 2 pound and it is nowhere near as strong as the flouroclear 2 pound. It is thinner in diameter but it is nowhere as good as the flouro clear. I don't notice any different sink rate between the two lines. Since the 100% flouro is thinner it will sink faster, but I have no confidence in that line in 2 pound. I just use the flouroclear.

Fantastic instruction thank you and really well done. One small tip nothing to do we technique is please let us not discard line no matter how small on the ground. There are some great little mini trash cans for line which fit on your belt where we can put our cut line in and then dispose correctly. Sorry I do not want to distract from the well thought out video but as fly-fisher persons we need to be superlative custodians of where we fish.

awesome fishing! I GOT LIKE 30 YRS FLY FISHING..OF COURSE I am not all that great.and have a ton of missed trout..still learning tricks..think mb its because was so used to one stream..donegal..and now and then clarks..do miss donegal after the spill which I believe was manure this yr and the nitrate that burned the trouts gills and there went all the stocked trout 5 days after stocking.but the natives donegal TU CLUB PUT IN YRS AGO.still there..lots brownies so I was told..I not caught 1 yet in 3 visits. moved up towards reading due to wifes work..I retired.not by choice.but anyways.tully is nice..still trying to hook like everyone else does.learning the zebra midge thing.or trying to. any how.dont know where your at here.but I been wanting for yrs to hit a wild trout stream and finally catch some..brownies is my fave love.. and thats a goal to meet once in my life is have a great day catching wild browns.tried checking wisconisco being was told native browns.but guy will not tell where..ughh anyways..one day.just one day.i get half as good as you with catching like you did here .would be awesome.makes hard to fish with a disability that dont allow to be on feet very long at one clip.. hop skip fishing is what i call it.lol fish a short..sit on ass.long story..keep up the great fishing.so admire what you got going on..and think i need to redo my line set up. 8 ft leader might be the issue..

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. If you're looking for some wild brown trout fishing go on the Fish and Boat commissions website. Search for "Class A wild trout streams" or "reproducing trout streams" Then it will come up with a big list of all the wild trout streams that have been surveyed in the state. The Class A list will tell you whether the stream is Class A brook or brown trout water. You can search by county and find streams that are close to home. It will surprise you how many wild trout streams will be right under your nose and you don't even know it. Have fun and good luck!

Ran across your video the day after I tried this technique for the first time using my 11' 4wt. My primary problem / issue was casting, as there is no weighted "fly line" to throw. I developed a kind of flip / casting method like I had a spinning rod in my hand, but with the two flies not generating much weight my line did not go out as far as I wanted. I note that this video looks like he's using a traditional fly backcast, which did NOT work with my 20' of mono / site line / leader / flies setup. Any advice? Thanks for this video!

Great video! But it's not always true that you always want the heavy fly on the bottom. Sometimes the if the fish are holding on the bottom, a heavy fly on top will pull both flies deep. You don't have as good of a constant contact with your flies, but it can be very effective in faster current.

Hold on to that chest rig. It's what a lot of pros use to use. Pretty sure you can't get them anymore. Tight line vide o introduced me to them with a video on a jersey competition on the rarington river--many years ago.

Nice video. I've also searched for less expensive tippet options. The problem with a "fishing line" such as the P-Line is that it's only 2 lb. test in 6X equivalent. RIO FlouroFlex Plus, for example, is 3.6 lb. test in the same diameter. So I think you're just giving up too much. If I need to save money, I would go with standard tippet first before I gave up so much in strength (almost double). RIO Powerflex comes in a guide spool at 100 yds for $10 at 3.4 lb. Their new Powerflex Plus is more expensive at $10 for a 50 yd spool but tests at 4.0 lbs which is actually double what you're using. I'm not affiliated with RIO in any way, it's just the one I sometimes use so I'm familiar with it. But I think you'll find the other brands like TroutMaster or what have you are also much stronger than what you're using. I just think if you hook a larger fish in current or near brush you're just at too much disadvantage with 2 lb test. With all the money we spend on fly fishing stuff, I can't justify that.

spikeconley thanks for voicing your opinion. I know there is a lot of back in forth about tippet all the time. I just use P-line because that’s what I like and it’s super cheap. Another thing to note is that different companies test their tippet breaking point differently so it can lead to different results. I do know that p-line is insanely strong, especially compared to orvis fluoro. P-line is also nylon coated fluoro line. This makes it much more abrasion resistant than just fluoro line. Thanks for watching!

Which creek is it? My first guess was Penns Creek, but the road suggests otherwise. The only other stream that wide is Little Juniata?
