How to EURO NYMPH Larger Rivers

Spent an afternoon fly fishing and euro nymphing on the Tuckasegee River in Western , NC. I fished for an hour and 15 min in an area that was about 40 yards long and 60 yards wide. I show you how I approach a larger river section by section by gridding it off and moving 2 steps at a time.
I caught wild, holdover and stocked rainbows (with a few brookies in the mix). The flies of the day were a size 20 black France Midge, a size 14 Hare's Ear Blowtorch and a size 14 Blowtorch (regular).
Enjoy and I hope you pick up some tips along the way!
Tight lines,
Cory

Hey Cory! Excellent dialog and instruction as always. How long is your leader in this video,also do you change flies to just change it up or has the action slowed with the flies being used at the time? I was just up on Big Pine and had a super trip just by fishing tiny pockets on that really big water.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 года назад
Hey Dale. Really appreciate it! My leader from my euro line to tippet ring is approx 22-23 ft. Great question about my flies....I was using a HE blowtorch because there were tons of caddis around. When I fish an area and have a couple of hits and miss them or if it is really fishy and I know I have had at least 10 or so perfect drifts, I'll change my fly to give them something else to look at. Sometimes that is the ticket. Thats what I did in this case, I had a couple of hits and missed, changed my fly, then got them. I'll do it alot throughout the course of the day. Glad you nailed them on Big Pine! That's a place that I haven't fished but is on the list.

Awesome vid Cory as usual. So what leader do you actually use? Reading comments from other vids it’s a Spanish Company Pezon? But I didn’t think it was colored Bc in your vids it shows us as a similar color to your fly line. But guess not.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 года назад
Thanks so much, Preston. I use Pezon & Michel. It is Spanish. You can get it from Riversfly. (Sempe is my second choice that you can get from Tactical Fly Fisher). It is colored Fluorescent Yellow and on camera it does blend in with my fly line a lot depending on the sun, etc….I also use orange and bi-color (pink/white).

(Sempe is a good choice also). The dubbing on the France Midge is black squirrel. Just a small collar. Tight lines and I appreciate the offer...Vermont is some beautiful country!

I am looking to get into euro nymphing and been watching all of your videos. Very educational as well as enjoyable (just like I am on the river). Thanks for all the hard work you are putting in creating these videos. If I may ask, what TT rod would you recommend for fishing West or East Branches of Delaware River? I can not decide between TT 10' 2wt, 10'.9" 2wt, or 10'.9" 3wt one. Not sure what would be the best one to start learning with as casting can be a challenge. Thanks
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 года назад
Thanks so much! Really appreciate it! I love my 2 weights, but when fishing the East and West Branch, I always grab my 10’9” 3wt. The currents can be really strong and you can get into a steady dose of larger fish. The 3wt is perfect for those types of rivers/conditions. And btw, I have a casting video, please check it out. Casting is the most important thing you can learn in euro nymphing. Good luck to you and thanks for watching.

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 года назад
Hey Patrick. Thanks for the question. I will be doing a video on that in the future. In the meantime, I'll do my best to explain. I am all about comfort and efficiency. I wear a Waterproof Fishpond lumbar back and have just the essentials. I don't carry all of my flies with me. Just a few boxes that have "backups" that can replenish the bugs that I carry on my lanyard. Inside the pack I also have extra leaders/tippet spools and few others essential items/snacks. (I really try to carry the minimum). My net is hooked to my wader strap on a net retractor. The workhorse for me is my lanyard from Golden Trout Lanyards. It has a C&F Chest Patch on it that carries my working flies for the day. It also has a drying foam patch on it. It has my spools of tippet, forceps, nippers, etc. I can literally fish from this all day. Everything is right in front of me. Hope this helps.

That’s pretty much it, Greg. I tie it on a curved scud/caddis style hook. Size 20-18. Inverted bead. Colors: black, oilve, and blood red. I’ll be doing a video soon on it.

@nathanielchoate69 2 года назад
Hey man nice video, I’m new to euro nymphing and I was wondering what you typical bead sizes are for typical river condition ex ( 2.5 mm and 2.5 mm or 3mm and 2.5 ) ? I fished last week with a double 3.5mm bead setup and found I was snagging on rocks often, but I also had some moderate success. Is it true that it is better to fish lighter thus increasing success ?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 года назад
Appreciate it, Nathaniel. It’s a really rare occasion that I would have double 3.5s on (almost never). Even in the heaviest of water I feel I can still get it down with a 3.5 perdigon (if you watch my East Branch Del video, that was some heavy water and I had on a 3.3 most of the day.). You probably would have been better off with one 3.5. Typical streams with normal flows 3 feet or less (and no wind), I’ll have a 2.8 on the bottom, with a 2.3 on the dropper. If the wind kicks up or it’s deeper/faster, I’ll bead up to 3.3/3.5. I do carry some with 3.8 beaded flies, but they are for the heaviest and deepest (over 5-6 feet) holes. It is definitely true if you can go lighter, it’s better. Bugs are smaller and more natural in the drift. Just focus on your cast and getting tight to your sighter. Watch my casting video and it will help you. Hope this helps.
