M-vave and Hotone have come out with cheap 4 button midi footswitch, very recommended for a tight budget. M-vave have sell an extension usb/5 pin for wireless midi also.
Your videos have been invaluable in getting the most out of my new Stomp. I feel like it would make sense to have a two button be a preset up/down, since I typically leave mine in stomp mode, but expanding it how you’ve got yourself setup would be awesome too.
Thank you for making these videos! I would seriously be lost trying to navigate my way through understanding the HX Stomp. I’ll definitely be picking up a Morningstar midi controller!
I use an AMT EX50 as expression pedal for my HX Stomp, which is super cool since it has 2 outputs: TRS and TS! When I use the HX Stomp alone (for small travel setups) I use the EX50 on the TS out to the ring input, and on the tip I have an aux footswitch for tap tempo/tuner. The HX is used in Stomp mode, and on FS3 thanks the Command Center I programmed it to trigger Next Snapshot when Holding the FS. So I have all the control I need without external midi control. In my normal board instead I use HX with a mini dual aux footswitch to scroll snapshots and tuner/tap. In this board I'm using it together with a Strymon Timeline, which has a expression pedal connected to it. Here there's a Midi cable from Timeline to HX. When I move the exp pedal connected to the Timeline, its movement is tracked via midi CC, so I can use the same exp pedal also to control parameters on the HX via midi. HX is amazing!
I just ordered an HX stomp and it’ll be here Thursday! I’ve watched your videos multiple times and they’re are the best when discussing the HX Stomp, Helix and practicable music know-how, etc.. I sincerely hope to be considered for the external foot switch and cable. Would be a great addition to my new HX Stomp!
Hello Zacarias, you actually won the pedal, congrats! You can see the drawing on my RU-vid/Instagram/Facebook stories. Please reach out to me either on my website or my social media pages so I can get that sent to you. Please do not respond to anyone who is asking you for money, I will never ask for money for these giveaways. Congrats, and thanks again!
Man you totally convinced me to go full midi! Im hoping Midi through works too. I use a Widi adapter to change patches/programs off of Ableton live. Makes running my show soooo much easier.
Scott, Your videos are very informative and helpful. This is what a tutorial should be. I have a Stomp XL and a Pod Go. When I have questions, I look in your video library. Thanks again brother !
Excellent video. I'm an old pedal board guy that made the switch to using just the Stomp. You're videos ae my go to resource . I could use that switch!
Another great video Scott. I have an m-audio expression pedal, which I modifed to include a toe switch. The toe switch acts as FS4 and the exp pedal is Exp1. This allows me to treat the expression like a real wah wah - push down to enable, push down to disable.
An excellent video Scott - thank you. Really clear and well put together, no fluff or padding, just straight to the point. New sub here from Ireland - best wishes, a fellow RU-vid audio tutor guy!
Toggle Expression - That can be useful so you could assign volume to exp1 and a wah to exp2 if you had an expression pedal plugged in this would either be a volume pedal or wah according to which you had selected. So many more options as the helix lets you control lots of things with expression pedals it could be gain, mix, delay times or even pitch shift like the digitech whammy. I think you can even set multiple parameters and controls so you could increase reverb mix while reducing the gain on an overdrive. Then still be able to hit that toggle expression switch and then you're back to having a volume pedal
@@marcodelucia Any specific model of expression pedal? That seems to be a question a lot of people ask and there's a few different ones. Line 6 do make their own and theres a brand called mission who make these pedals. I have seen the M Audio ones work too but I would do some research on this if you're thinking of buying one. You would have to adjust the pedal settings to activate or deavtivate it through presets/snapshots. It's been a while since I used an external pedal or edited my helix so a bit rusty
Great video! I need to look at Morningstar's options again. Seems like one of the best ways to add MIDI control to the Stomp. I use a DIY arduino based switcher, but it doesn't have scenes, so each switch only sends a single command. 6 switches send preset up and down, FS1 and 2, tap tempo, and tuner. I do use a Source Audio Hot Hand 3. I clipped off the ring, and mounted the transmitter to my violin. Normally I use it to kick up delay feedback by tilting my violin down to the floor, and I have a DVP4 mini to control mix on the effect loop, wah, or volume, depending on the preset.
Good stuff amigo! Currently a Helix Floor user and yet to get HX Stomp but cool thing is this helped me better understand the functionality of my Helix. Much obliged sensei!🙏
An expression pedal looks like a good addition to my Stomp XL. Definitely worth experimenting with. The Morningstar midi looks really useful but I'm not sure I want to use that much real estate on my board. Thanks for yet another great video!
I've used your videos to become more and more familiar with my hx stomp and really appreciate the great content! I wanted to share a small correction in this video. At about the 1:40 mark you mention needing to use TRS cable attached to the 2-button footswitch to use both buttons. I'm currently using a mission expression pedal (with toe switch) AND a 2-button foot switch all at the same time with a TRS -> Dual TS y-cable. My stomp sees and allows me to use both footswitches and expression1 and expression2 using this TRS -> Dual TS cable. So I just wanted to share that with you! Thanks again for all the great content on expanding the hx stomp!
Wait… really? How does that work if you have to assign how you want the external input to be assigned. You set it to either FS or EXP mode. You can’t use 4 (2 extra FS and 2 extra EXP). If I am incorrect on that, can you share what pedal and system you are using? To make sure I understand you correctly…. You are able to assign FS4, FS5, EXP 1 and EXP 2 all at the same time using the method that you are using? I’m still almost positive this cannot be done, but if I am incorrect, I will do an updated video. Thank you!
Hey Scott, ya! I'm using a mission engineering expression pedal with toe-switch and a generic 2 button footswitch (not sure of the make/model). I haven't assigned fs1, fs2, exp1 and exp2 to anything just yet. But the stomp is seeing them all at once using the trs -> dual ts cabling. I'll try to do some assignments in the coming days and update you on the results. But I can confirm the hx does see all the buttons and expression pedals all at once :)
Ok gotcha, that makes sense! However, I do not believe you can program all 4 because under global setting and preferences you have to assign if you want it to be a footswitch or exp pedal. So I don’t believe you can use all 4 at once. But let me know if you find out otherwise!!
Thanks Scott! I’m finding the same in global settings as you are explaining. Apologies for the confusion and taking up your time man. I do appreciate the back and forth though. I plan to use my dual ts cable for my expression pedal with toe switch. For footswitch expansion, it looks like midi is the way to go. I’ll be consuming more of your RU-vid videos on that as well. Appreciate ya buddy. Thanks!
In 8:18 you mentioned that you used a Sonicake expression pedal with your HX Stomp with a TRS to 2 TS cables. One for the foot switch and another to the pedal. I bought the pedal and it didn’t work. When sweeping the values they were g going from 0 to 100 to 0 again. So the heel was 0 and toe was also 0. The reason is that the output jack for the sonicake pedal is expecting a TRS cable. What I did was to unscrew both output and input jacks, open the case from the bottom and lift the contact (for the output jack) that would touch the “sleeve” part of the TRS cable. Since we’re plugging a TS cable this change was needed. Maybe the hardware was different when you used it, Scott. Anyway, thank you for this great video. It helped me a lot.
I’m having this same trouble. In the way you explained how you fixed it, what did you mean by “lift the contact”? Did you mean unsoldering one of the three connections? Thanks
@@jeremyrandolph6790 I just did this. There are three contacts going across the connector that touch the cable connector. On the output side you can just bend up the middle contact so that it no longer touches the cable when inserted. Thanks @arthurspa!
I'm sure someone's said this by now, but the footswitch to switch between EXP1 and EXP2 is good if you use just a one-button footswitch (tip for example) and an expression pedal (ring)... then you can use that button to tell the Stomp which exp function to target. In much the same way that that Mission L6 expression pedal works.
Nice to have an affiliate link to a TRS single switch. BTW from the video I was not sure you could do the TRS 1-switch and 1-exp approach but as suspected that is an approach too. Might go that route for simplicity and fitting it all on my nano. 😂
Thanks again Scott....My weekend with the HX has paid dividends....I watched a video where the dude said....you can add two more buttons, OK, and then you can have FIVE snapshots with an HX.....Since I control my HX with Midi, I was thinking I could just plug in a TRS adaptor and trick the HX into thinking there is a two switch pedal hooked up. But after spending some time and watching this video I don't think you can assign additional snapshots to FS4 and FS5.....
@@ScottUhlMusic yeah, I got that part. It’s just that this double switch is cheaper then the most of the single switches and in some occasions I might use expression as a volume pedal in signal chain and then use the dual switch
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really love how well you explain the helix products. As well as everything else. I would be interested in seeing one of your videos of you and your band playing using one of these fly rigs. Anyway, thank you for all that you do you don’t know how much you’ve helped me with my helix and my HX stock in all of my gear.
Thanks! Glad to help! I’m literally at a fly rig right now, and we are setting up on a stage ON a pool. Lol. Had no idea. Waiting for the rest of the stage to be setup while I check RU-vid comments. Definitely going to get footage of this for some future video stuff
I suggest the ActitioN midi controller. With led lights, all the plugs you can ask for, and 8 toggle switches. 130€. That's fair! No screen, but with learn function it will be easy to setup.
Fantastic vid. Good work! I have split the TRS to a footswitch and exp pedal. All my delays are set to mix on the exp pedal which frees up a switch. 0 mix is same as pedal off. Also means i can adjust the amount of delay on the fly
I think the Expression switch would be if you have one Expression pedal but via Midi assigns - you can alternate between the two - if you don't want to have two expression pedals. Which I've guessed from watching your video and now I think I might have found a way to modify my settings - so thank you 😀
@@ScottUhlMusic definitely I have an MC-8 and an HX Stomp! I need to dig into it deeper! It’s more than I need but I couldn’t resist! I’ve really learned a lot from your channel as I was completely new to Midi and the HX Stomp
The Ampero switch is less than 20 euros in Amazon, is the best and cheapest add-on, the MC8 is awesome but really hard to get as they're sold out everywhere and local retailers add a very high premium
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, I want one but it's impossible to get here in Spain and their only official distributor charges a premium of 200 euros for it!, I mentioned this to Morningstar but they didn't cared
THANKS FOR SHAREING THIS GREAT TIPS.. NOW I CAN EASILY UPGRADE MY STOMP.. CAN YOU MAKE A VIDEO ON A SMALL PEDALBOARD WHICH CAN BE FITTED WITH HX STOMP ALONG WITH TWO FOOT SWITCH AND A EXPRESSION PEDAL..!
Thanks! And I just carried it portably in this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w40W3gGUvgE.html I still use that box to this day since the hx stomp takes 30sec to plug in 👍
Wow thanks Scott for the video and giveaway! The little two button switch is certainly useful, as I can add it to a cheaper ampero control midi switch. I think less functions compared to any Morningstar. Maybe once you get your hands on it you could do a comparison video?
Thanks man! I use the app Quantiloop for my solo cover live looping which I do a review on here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QmActvDJx7M.html My original music is a whole crazy setup in ableton with tracks, automated live looping, midi, lights, video, and more. I go over part of that in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ewuyLdz8Vg4.html
I hope I get picked this time!! lol. I was hoping to use the amp modeling in the Stomp for bass but didn't end up loving the tones I was getting. It's likely me. Give me infinite possibilities and I'll totally ruin any decent tone lol. I've been revisiting it for the effects in hopes of shrinking my pedal board to my Noble DI, compressor and the stomp, maybe my Darkglass distortion if I don't dig what the stomp's got. A couple extra buttons would be super handy in that.
Many thanks for many hours of instruction!! I programmed presets & SnapShots. The 3 stomp buttons select Snapshots (for some of the presets.) External FS4 is preset down, FS5 preset up. (No tap/tuner.) I set the input noise gate. QUESTION: Where (if at all) should I connect my TC Electronic Polytune3? If possible, what cable should I use? THANK YOU!
You can always use the built in tuner on the stomp. Get an external pedal and program it to be the tuner: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-B2mSNYFPFiI.htmlsi=Ay1yGk_mzV3Yl18g
Right, your video is how I learned to set up the external 2 button switch. But I would like to put the Polytune in front of the Stomp. And keep using FS4 & FS5 to go up & down the presets. Would the Polytune go IN to the L Mono Input? With a 1/4" instrument cable? Or 1/4" flat patch cable as one might use to connect analog effects pedals? THANKS AGAIN @@ScottUhlMusic
Since using the stomp standalone at home but with an amp with my band, is made fs4 my "panic button". It switches the loop for the preamp off and activates a model. Just in case the amp goes down or whatever. Coming from digital I am not against the idea using the stomp just like that in live scenarios, but there may be situations where the pa might not be as powerful in super small clubs where you have to have stage volume or having a big stage and being able to have some stage volume just for feel.
Thanks for your quick response! So if i wanted to still have the footswitch “4/5” you would suggest to do that via midi instead? I asked Line 6 the same question I asked you and they were very helpful and sent me a link to one of your vids 🤘
First off your videos are super helpful!! Thank you so much! The TRS cable at 8:09…if you ran the cable OUT from the expression (wah/vol) and one into a Stomp and the other into an HX Effects, could you control parameters on each Line 6 unit with the single expression pedal?
I got that sonicake expression pedal. Losing my mind for a bit as the calibration was always 0% then halfway was 100% then full was back to 0%. It seems like that sonicake you have to use a TRS cable. That fixed it up and now auto calibrates and no issues getting the full range of 0% at heel and 100% at toe.
I use my toggle expression switch!.. I have in the preset a wah and a tremolo the wah is set to be exp1 the tremolo speed is exp2 then I have one expression pedal and use the toggle expression to switch between using the expression pedal on wah or tremolo!
Ive combed through a lot of HX Stomp videos. This one is by far the easiest to watch. Clear. Consice. Helpful. Bravo. Question. Is it possible to use a dual switch and midi switch at the same time?
Hey Scott! Thanks for the great video! I just bought an HX Stomp and your videos have been really helpful. I use the 3 snapshots mode, so i really miss a tap/tuner and a boost for when I play soft/fingerstyle (I play acoustic guitar), so this video really helped med there. Thanks! Thats also why i hope to be in your giveaway for a chance of winning the external footswitch. Have a great day 😁
I don't want to affect the tone. Do you suggest checking for the true bypass feature for these pedals? I don't know if external switch pedals/ exp. pedals and midi controllers can affect the tone. By the way, HX stomp is truebypass.

Very helpful, as always. Is there a way to use a footswitch as a toggle - i.e., pressing the footswitch will simultaneously turn one effect on and the other off. Pressing the footswitch again would reverse it. Thanks.
Im almost positive those definitely work with midi controllers! I used it with Jam Up in this old video of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Lu9RG1CKEfQ.html
I haven’t used the GT 1000c so I don’t know tbh. But yes, you can use all 3 at once. But with expression you only get two options, so: 2 buttons, 2 exp pedals, or 1 button+1 expression pedal 👍
I've got a 2-button switch plugged into Exp 4 and 5 on my HX Stomp, and I use that to scroll up and down through my Snapshots. I've have an old Boss GT-6 that has 7 foot switches, and an Expression Pedal and I'd like to use it as a Controller for the Stomp. I did manage to get the Expression Pedal to control the volume on a Preset by linking MIDI to a Volume Block on the Stomp. I'd like to use the GT-6 foot switches to control other functions on the Stomp, like Bank Up, Bank Down, Tuner on/off, etc., but I haven't been able to get the Stomp to recognize/respond to the MIDI sent by the GT-6. I think I've got to use the "Learn" function, but I always get stuck at this point. I'm probably not doing something right. I usually give up at this point. I may have seen something in this video that might help. I can't find any videos that utilize a device like the GT-6 as a Controller as I've described. 🤷
You cannot get more than 2 extra controls with the EXP input on the stomp. You have to use midi in that case. Because the exp input only allows 2 extra controls which you assign in global. Midi has much much more
Ah gotcha, I was mixing it up with another thing. Does the GT6 send midi? I’ve found Roland/Boss stuff is very difficult with midi, but if it sends midi, you should be able to get that to work 👍 I do consulting if you need to set up a zoom call. Website link is in the description
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, the Boss GT-6 does send MIDI, and I was able to get it's Expression Pedal to control the Volume on an HX Stomp Preset. From your video, it looks like the easiest way to get the Stomp to recognize the GT-6 MIDI is to first turn on/access that feature/mode in the Stomp, for instance the Tuner. Then turn on "Learn" on the Stomp, then press the button/foot switch on the GT-6 I want to use to turn on the Tuner on the Stomp. Does that sound right?
Thanks for the helpful video! I have the exact same expression pedal but I having an issue where heel to tip it goes from 0 - 100 - 0... I tried changing many settings but still can't get it to work correctly. Any advice on how I can get it to work?
Hello! Thank you for your videos, they are really helpful, I bought ammoon guitar systems and thay work great. But if we talking about Helix Stomp - did you tried to use M-Wave Chocolate BT midi controller? I use it for a year right now and it is perfect to me, even in comparsion with stuff that costs 10 times more. I use it wiressly and wired in different situations, you must try it, it cheap as hell. Dont forget buy a midi-bluetooth transmitter, but remember that only cons of this thing is low distance (there is some fixes, but it is as it is right out of the box).
@@ScottUhlMusic it costs about 30$ on aliexpress (with additional 15$ for M-Wave midi to bluetooth transmitter), and its capabilities are insane. It can send anything you want in case of midi scenarios (single PP or CC commands, CC on-off pairs for Helix, even chains of midi commands), you can plug expression pedal into this and get wireless expression or you can turn it into wired one - but you dont want to do this because it has built-in battery! And it also can be used as iPad control or as bluetooth keyboard for PC or Mac (and you can set any key to a footswitch). And 15$ midi-bluetooth transmitter can work as MIDI-USB-Host, so you can use it with old stuff like Zoom MS pedals that dont have MIDI IN, but have midi over USB. Sounds incredible, but it can all of this and it do its job perfectly! Only cons for me is low wireless distance (about 3-4 feets) because of antenna lacking (some people attached external one, but you need soldering skills) and no indication leds on footswitches.
Thanks for this awesome video Scott, I just subscribed! I am such a noob when it comes to the massive world of Multi-FX, MIDI & switcher possibilities, but I have seen the light! I just bought an HX Stomp and a Boss-ES8 switcher. Have you or anyone here ever used this combination? I imagine there are similar capabilities with this powerful duo, but sincerely appreciate anyone's thoughts here. Thanks again!
Hi, is there something like a dual switcher on the market (with two foot switches) that would switch between different pedals (switch 1) and scroll trough presets with the other switch? This way you would only need 2 switches to change presets on (let’s say 3) DIFFERENT pedals that have a preset feature and a TRS connection.
Ugh, why did Line 6 need to make the DSP bypass block the entire screen? I want the use the stomp as a simple multi fx so I would be bypassing it all the time. Not seeing which patch I left it on during a gig would be hell.
I had one a long time ago. It was a PAIN to setup, but there was some software for $30 which made it super easy. Can’t remember what it was called though
@@ScottUhlMusic I tried so hard,. Somehow i did it but not fornthe exp pedals. With "learn" it does nothing, and all without the software (have seen something on RU-vid but in the end is all good and confusing at the same time). 😔
I'm thinking about getting one of the Disaster Area micro midi controllers. Before I get one, I was wondering is it possible to add a 4th snapshot to the midi controller? I would really love to have at least 1 more
Hi Scott! New subscriber here, been enjoying all your videos! I have a quick Q: Im using the Ampero switch and I want to use the FS4 to go to a specific preset and when I set it in the command center it works once but when I go to another preset and press FS4 it doesnt work. Then I go to command center again and it is unassigned! You know what could be happening? When I try this with another utility such as snapsht up/down or looper it works so Im completetly lost hahah
Interesting… you will have to program it to load a different preset for every preset in the command center. You also need to save it after you program it as well.
@@ScottUhlMusic I'm still holding out for Neural Amp Modeler to have a hardware device that can load captures for live use as I'm not a huge fan of Ik multimedia products but atm the Tone x is pretty tempting despite me not being a big fan of their software or products it does sound really good and is fairly affordable
I haven’t used one so I’m not sure about how it works, but with the stomp you only get 2 extra expression inputs and they are either pedals or footswitches. So 5 total on the stomp unless you use midi
5:52 isn't TogglEXP helpful if you want to use one expression pedal to control two different things on one preset? say you have a preset that you leave the expression pedal on volume (maybe EXP 1) most of the time, but you also have a wah set up as EXP 2 for example. no?
Hey Scott, your videos have been super helpful! I'm using my Loopy Pro as a digital pedalboard for my HX Stomp XL for saxophone playing. I'm trying to assign a button to send the HX Stomp FS7 and FS8 but it won't recognize it or it will turn on the block but not do anything again. Have a had any issues with this? (cc55 and cc56 at 127 on loopy for FS7 and FS8)
If I’m understanding you correctly, I would try sending midi to the certain commands more than FS7 and 8. So if you want fs7 to turn on your chorus pedal, assign that via midi instead of by a footswitch command.
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for the reply... this video actually fixed the issue: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UiB2pInxkWM.html Keep doing what you're doing! :)
Hx stomp only allows 2 total expression inputs, so you can use 1 button and 1 expression pedal in that situation. You’ll want a TRS 1/4” to 2 TS 1/4” splitter to connect to the stomp 👍
