Ah, the good old days. Cobras and shieldless Asps to the core, going weeks with a cracked windshield, No fuel rats, no Neutrons. Just the endless, cold void, and the promise of riches when you return. If you return.
that was pretty much my experience until last week when i got horizons. got my exploration rank to 96% pioneer in a d rated dbx. went all the way to sgr a* and back with hull at 70%. now i'm in an engineered jumpaconda and some of the magic has certainly gone
@@5T3LTH Are you still playing it? I just picked it up again for the...4th time probably? Was mining my last play through but now I am getting into exploration
now with the DSSA you're never much more than 100 jumps from a carrier and a full repair if needed. The milky way sure has gotten smaller since fleet carriers
This video is important. I recently got into the game and have come a long way in a short time due to closing my eyes and still seeing core asteroids. If you look at guides and look at builds everyone wants everything engineered to hell. It doesn't matter what guide you follow: it's not simple and it's not easy. It's important to not take an "endgame" and burn yourself out when all you want to do is see pretty shit in space.
Thank you....this is invaluable to a new player. Everyone bangs on about "you must get things engineered"! Well, a lot of us can't do that so how to build without engineering is priceless...thank you. Subscription earned!
AFMUs are not merely very lightweight, they're literally zero mass, like fuel scoops. Also while it's nice to have two so they can repair each other, they don't malfunction like most other modules, and if they do hit 0%, a Reboot & Repair can bring one back to life, so don't feel too bad if you'd rather drop one of them for something else. Instead of the 2A Power Distributor, go for the 3D - it's 0.5t lighter, and its engine recharge rate is higher, so you'll boost more frequently, while saving ~0.1MW. 0.5t is also how much a 1D repair limpet controller costs. Stuff in a cargo rack and one of those instead of that docking computer and now hull damage need not accumulate.
Actually you can go with 1D power distributor, you only lose the ability to boost, but you can only boost in normal space and you are going to be in supercruise almost all the time during the expedition. And you can even downgrade powerplant to 2D if you turn off your shields while in space, you will need them only when landing, then you can turn off fuel scoop. This two downgrades will give you additional 0.22 l.y. of jump range. The most usefull downgrade i can think of would be downgrading fuel tank to 4C, this alone give you additional 1.61 l.y. jump range, while still be able to jump 3 times on a single tank, giving exactly 36 l.y. of jump range total. (instead of 34.17)
@@SpiritOfSmoker Boost is important when you need it. You'll rue the day you traded it for 0.14 LY as you plummet towards the ground on that unexpectedly high-G world late at night. Will you even *notice* 0.14 LY? Dropping from a 2A to a 2D power plant gains you a whopping 0.03LY, which is entirely lost in the noise - the fullness of your reserve tank has more than double the effect. Meanwhile you've nearly doubled your base heat load and made power management a lot more fiddly. False economy IMO. Also not a fan of cutting down on fuel tanks, primarily because it cuts down on the effectiveness of neutron boosting. Probably also makes general routing less effective because the plotter has to direct you to fuel stars more frequently. None of your points are wrong, but think twice before you make major trade-offs for fractions of a percent in one metric.
@@limitationsapply tbh i do not have much experience in long-range exploration, (my max distance from sol is only 5k l.y.) and i haven't landed on a high g planet yet. So maybe ill learn it some time in a hard way xD but for now all my exploration and trading ships are equipped with 1d power dist. about power plant, i have never overheated in my asp, and additional need in turning modules on/off makes me fell more engaged with my ship, so i think it's not for all. thanks for great critics of my trade-offs, ill consider changing some of this when i finally do some real long-range exploration.
@@SpiritOfSmoker A quote I read recently seems appropriate: "Right up until you need it, resilience looks like waste". The longer you're out there, the more likely you are to encounter a once-in-a-blue-moon situation where you need boost, or a decent shield, or whatever else. Also the longer you're out there, the greater the cost of losing your ship. Some people get a kick out of living on the edge like that, others like to spend a few percent of their jump range on reducing the risk. Nothing wrong with either approach, just be sure you take the right one for you and your journey.
I like to side with caution. I do deep exploration and always use a shield and AFM- I don’t take hull repair limpets though. If I take significant Hull damage 50% or so, I will just start heading straight back to my home system
Heatsinks: Not usually needed, but vital when mistakes happen. And they do later in the expedition. Also docking computer is important because you forget how to dock when you're way out in the black for a long time. And a mistake with the toast rack at 0% hull integrity can be lethal.
Nice I always loved the AspX. Is my main ship I used till this day. So far I got it to a good 63 LY jump range. Im at Anchorage next to Sag A. Im thinking to start soon my journey to Beagle point. Wish me luck. See yall in the black o7
@@x1boricua21 dude, you should seriously take some people with you. I went alone once and while it felt good to do it I wished I could have shared the experience.
@@iver1343 yeah but now you can join discords full of people and just ask if anyone wants to join. I met two groups of people recently, one I didn't like too much and the others are really cool. I joined a few discords with over 1000 players so if I like I can join in on some fun as they plan weekly projects to do together.
I learned the hard way that you want a shield on your exploration ship. My first exploration ship the type 6 did not have a shield equipped, and the hall got damaged while landing multiple times. So even if it adds a little mass to your ship equip a shield. You and your exploration data will thank me.
A proper shield is a must as you will have to land on some planets during long journeys as i remember crushing into a moon with full speed 40,000 ly away from the bubble that i literally watched my whole journey while thinking this was the end then i remembered my Anaconda had 1.6k shields and it actually lost only 30% :))
Especially when you're on an expedition. You can be as careful as you want but it just takes one other dumb player to boost too close to you or something and that can be it
I know it adds unnecessary weight but I like to add one 3 or 4 first class passenger cabin. That way I feel like my cmdr has a nice place to rest/live in on the ship.
I explored the galaxy back in the days before engineering like this. I've just started engineering my Asp after getting back into the game again and it's amazing how fast you can cross the bubble these days.
I think the heat sinks are important. I get what you're saying, that if you know what you're doing, they're not necessary, but they can be a lifesaver, literally. I'm currently just roaming the galaxy at random, and I had no heatsinks at all. I picked some up on a whim in Colonia, and headed to Sag A. I've been to the black hole at Maia, but Sag A is a different beast. I got a little too close trying to get to the tourist beacon, and my heat started rising. I immediately tried to turn around and fly away, but I wasn't going anywhere, lol, and the heat was still rising. Thanks to the whim and picking up heatsinks, I was able to deploy the sinks, find a new star in my FOV, and charge the frameshift drive and jump away. Without the sinks, I would have been done for!
For the tiny amount they shave off your jump range they're a complete no-brainer. Never seen worse advice to give anyone than "don't bring heatsinks on your explorer build" lol
I used to not bring heat syncs until my fsd dropped me INSIDE of a star in a binary system. Needless to say my beer was spilled, but my hull integrity and I survived
yeah that happened to me, i saw a regular yellow-orange star and i pop in to see a huge brown dwarf right next to it almost pulled into it but got out of the way in time, it did look beautiful from a distance but very scary
I really recommend AFMU's and Repair Limpets, I once arrived in a binary pair system in the second star. I was in a dolphin and this put me in random system shutdowns. That was a failed long range tourism mission.
Actually you don't need a 6A fuel scoop. I am very confident in my fuel scooping and never overheat during scooping. Also my exploration trips take months so no hurry, it's about the journey not refuelling faster. So better use the 6 slot for what really matters to each explorer. Speaking of exploration philosophy why is everyone so stoked on max jumb range? Why can't you just enjoy the game with as many stops instead of as few ones? In my opinion the purist curious explorer needs exploration tools not necessarily a faster ship but definitely a reliable long haul vessel that can travel the void with no major issues along the galaxy.
Thanks for the tip of using a 3A prismatics. My current have a 5D shield(engineered) but only a 3H guardian fsd booster. That might both shave off some weight and add some lightyears to the jump. :)
@@mattyl9299 That's not true, the best example is on an exploration build - it tanks heat damage, and can be used for repair limpets. You don't take the limpet with you, you synth them on demand.
You can get a diamondback explorer to jump around 40 lightyears with no engineering while carrying a SRV bay and shield generators. Its only slightly further than the asp and you lose some internal compartments but honestly its better than the asp as long as you're not going to Colonia or something. You can rival the asp with a non engineered anaconda if you're trying to visit Colonia too, you get way more internals but have to deal with large landing pads
You can put your FSD on a lower priority as you can't jump with your guns out anyways. When you want to jump you retract guns and your FSD will boot automatically. This way you don't have to switch manually and save a lot of power.
You can fly into refuel and there's a point where you can sit where the temp won't rise and if you slow down fast enough and get it right you can sit stationary to the start as your scoop takes in near the max amount it can. I do it all the time when I want to FSS scan a system and refuel at the same time. Temp can rise to 65 or 70 % and if Its the right distance it stays at that.... So you don't have to actually skim a star.
Great advice and timely. I learned how to make enough for a hauler hunting pirates with the police in my sidewinder, followed road to riches in hauler, then got an asp explorer after four days of road to riches, I used it to mine for two weeks then bought a python and mined a week with it. Got pirated by a player and didn't even get pissed, because I learned and it makes the game more challenging. I also learned how to reboot to repair thrusters. I don't understand why one would pirate but to each their own.. I appreciate the boredom, excitement gained through hard work it takes to experience this title...I am tired of mining for now and I want to go as far as I can for one month, nothing else, just go as far as I can, So I have gone back my ASP and have been trying to get it sorted for longest possible jumps. I have one 500Mil, but i don't have to get the next big ship right now... I agree with your build and was pretty close. Thanks for the video. I would really appreciate an opportunity to fly with you if possible some time, I have only played a few weeks, but have earned every ship myself. I don't use any super cruise assist or docking, because its my favorite part of the game, docking and flying. I really like doing it so I never used it. keep up the great videos. CMDR RUJOHN
This video inspired me to make my first exploration trip. I put together an asp explorer and decided that since it was the Witchhead 2 that inspired me I should go to the Witchhead nebula in it’s honor
Wonderful video, thanks. I am new to exploring. I sold my ASPX after realizing that the DiamondBack would serve me better until I was engineered, perhaps I will rethink this :)
Necro time. Lol. Made this set up to venture into the black. REALLY gotta get accustomed to flying this as opposed to a hauler. I’ve bounced a few times landing on planets. Lol.
My diamondback has better jump range and I haven't reduced size of my powerplant and thrusters. I also have an extra 8 ton fuel tank. I just bought d rated core internals of the same size as stock. The only downside to it is that you don't have a 5 size optional slot to get a 5A fuel scoop so you can't refuel as fast ( that is why I have the extra fuel tank). I have a size 4 shield generator that I should probably downsize too but I still have a 35.55 jump range minimum.
@@sed8181 Yep, the Diamondback is a beauty. I would try an ASP mainly for the better view in the cockpit. As of right now my Diamondback also has 35ly minimum, and I just like it. I noticed that you can also make good money carrying passengers over long distances.
Jack Hayes i really just don’t like the way it looks. I have moved into bigger ships anyways, but I will never forget my aspx. Almost exactly the same as shown here after it took good care of me on my first explo trip.
@The Mine The scope of the video is "without Engineering" your 65ly Phantom is Engineered,by the way mine does 70 and my Conda does nearly 79,so based on what you said you are still a baby.
I just bought an ASP less than a week ago and i didn't have the money to buy the best fuel scoop so i have chosen the C one. I was doing a short hop to Maia to get a meta alloy and even though i should run out of fuel mid-way. i didn't need to stop at a star for refueling because my fuel scoop was able to refuel fast while flying through the atmosphere of the star to align with the next jump. And engineering isn't that difficult. I started working on my FSD a week ago and now i am close to finishing the last level. I think i needed about 5-7 hours to get all materials
4:41 but they're right A 6B or 6C still works. of course, they're not the best. Usually, I only fuel scoop while I'm heading around the star to access the next jump point, and 6B or C will have it filled up by then anyway. If it takes me 5 seconds to go around a star, and a 6A is done scooping in 3 seconds, I still have to wait 5 seconds to activate my FSD. If a 6B scoop takes 4 seconds and 6C takes 5 secods to scoop, I still have to wait 5 seconds to get around the star, which is *the same amount of time as a 6A scoop.*
"for all extense and purposes" eh what? Intents and purposes. Not intensive purposes Not extensive purposes And I have no idea what extense is. Certainly not in the dictionary. Edit: Wow, twice in one video.
As somebody who went to Beagle point and returned in 3 weeks i wouldn't recommend using anything but a slightly engineered Anaconda as i was carrying tons of stuff including 1.6k shields, 4G platenary, repair limpets and even a fighter bay to play around even then i had 55 ly jump range!! You could reach Beagle point with 34 ly range but it will be an extremely painful journey not much fun at all...
Just started a R2R run out to Pelican nebula cause why not. But 4 jumps in came across this vid....heading to a station now to redo my slots THANKS!!!! 🤑😎
Yeah but your fuel scoop is complete dogshit. Even with the best possible fuel scoop you still gotta spend like 30sec-1min scooping off a star. Better hope it’s not a type o!
@@LotusBoi1989 I've crossed the Galaxy in a DBX,it takes what 10 seconds more than the ASP? And the DBX remains cooler,so it's not a problem at all.I have DBX,ASP X,Phantom and Anaconda all fitted as Explorer ships so I can compare fairly well, also first time I went to Sag A it was in an Adder before Engineers and Guardian Booster where a thing,I mean I've become Elite Explorer the "old way" went to the four corner of the Galaxy and three times to Beagle with three different ships, all the rest it's just cheap talk.
I recently installed the the lowest grade of guardian powerplant and power distributor I could fit in my phantom explorer. The fsd range stayed about the same, but gained a lot of power, and way faster boost charge for my thrusters. And able to fit 4 lightweight modded size 2 rail guns and still average a 65 lyr a jump. Yeah, don't need the rails, but I got rofl stomped by an federal assault ship flying NPC on my way back from 3 hrs of exploration near guardian ruins. Not sure why he came after me, no scan or nothing, was just mapping a sector when i got interdicted (i tried to scan a private data thing, maybe that sent him after me?). So, no more going undefended for me.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Mass Manager better for an Asp, rather than Deep Charge? I always heard deep charge is only good on small ships like Eagles and Sidewinders...
Dbx unengineeref, full D spec except the fsd will get you far away, almost 40 ly a jump.. bonus tip: afmu rated b has more charges than a, which will let you stay out that much longer..
> afmu rated b has more charges than a, which will let you stay out that much longer.. No, it has more ammo, but they're less efficient per shot. A 5A repairs 187.6 units of integrity, a 5B repairs only 167.9 units. Note you can synthesize AFMU ammo from materials you can harvest in the SRV, so both can in principle keep you going indefinitely. The benefits of the B's are they're cheaper, have more integrity (of limited interest unless you overheat a lot and only carry one), and use less power (not a big concern when they're off most of the time). But they repair less, and I believe they repair more slowly.
you can adjust your galaxy map to show where they are. Doesn't tell you which blue prints you'll get though, some spots need keys, while others just need relics.
Or, rather than a docking computer, a supercruise assistant is much more useful for exploration. Or you could fit a small 1D repair limpet controller for fixing hull damage. Not forgetting then to fill that empty slot with a cargo rack. Making sure you have enough iron and nickle to synthesise some limpets as you need them.
@@sed8181 Some of it is tryhards but you just don't need em. The cheeky 75% throttle trick makes it obsolete imo. I also prefer to be as hands-on with my flight as possible. If you prefer to kick back and let the autopilot do the work that's cool too. Never let anyone tell you how to play :-)
Thanks man! This guide helped get down to the Pleiades and I’m currently on my way to the witch head nebula and then the loop and running man nebula do you have any other locations to got to and other suggestions even the best engineers for fad drives and jump range keep doing good work man 👍👍 Mind some of my spelling mistakes 😬
Caylib Thomas: I'm on my way to the Witch Head Nebula, too. You probably know already, but there's Thargoid activity. Proceed with care, commander. Safe flights.
I laughed really hard tonight. PVEing with a friend that swears only idiots would ever take a supercruise assist modual... A, I like smoke breaks on my way to where I'm going and B, when we both got our cockpits shot open 2v4ing, and won the fight, who do you think made it to station with time to spare, and who do ya think suffocated in supercruise repeatedly missing the station due to a total lack of forward hud? :P IMO unless you are pvping there is no real argument against the assist mods, sure, I can supercruise and dock, but my boss's car can be summoned with the push of a button from down the block in 2021, why would I NOT trust the autopilot in my 3300s space boat? Docking computer frees up time to check your star map, check your msgs, maybe que up some more youtube vids, nothin wrong with that. I get why in a pvp situation you likely wanna ditch it for something that can help in a fight, but even then, I have won more than a few fights with two slots wasted on assist mods and still come out on top, its not like they lock your FAO button or anything.
Used an ASP to go to the center then colonia, then I upgraded to an 80ly jumpaconda. Can’t believe I tortured myself in that ASP, jumpaconda can get to the center in like 4 hours
A lot of us aren't in a rush. Also you get tons more exploration data with lower jump range. There's so much more to a good explorer build than simply range. I spent many hours watching the min/max jumpacondas get blown up at the view due to their shitty underpowered modules lol
Nick Hunter yeah that’s true. Sometimes I DO want to land on planets, but for me it’s a rush to the center because I love all the background light pollution. Jumpaconda can turn a day’s journey into a few hours journey. Too bad the fuel efficiency is bad though.. only get like 900ly per gas tank on the neutron clusters
@@greenthunder1000 I guess it comes down to your overall gameplay focus. I tend to mostly explore on expeditions with other players where there is a lot of meetups and player events n stuff so having a "fun" ship outweighs having a long range one. I'd probably rethink it if I was just gonna beeline for the centre as you say. And yeah the difference in skybox in the core is proper stunning. Colonia is such a beautiful place :-)
The ASP suggested costs 40m to build: s.orbis.zone/5v7d The DBX only costs 10m and can actually jump 3 more LY's: s.orbis.zone/5v76 - BUT because it has only cl4 internals, the fuel scoop is quite small and takes much longer to refuel than the ASP This is basic info for beginner explorers and should have been mentioned in this vid.
This is why i kind aliked my Clipper explorer. HUGE fuel scoop, swallowed suns in seconds. Jump speed increased becasue i spent less time scooping. it countered teh low jump distance. on top of that you had 625M/s boost speed haha.Yes it was a stupid ship! Took it to Colonia.
The Best of the best from the best to the best besides ''as'' a new player you can't get in Jameson Memorial without Elite Rank and just buy everything what means for you flying around first to get all the modules will take some time ^.^
My problem with exploring is that it's almost never worth the money. Sure, you get to see pretty nebulas and planets, but getting there is too much of a chore. You could spend about 3 days jumping from system to system, and get like 40 million when you turn around and head back. Or you could make that in *2-3 hours* of mining or 2 hours of trading.
The Asp has can only fit a size 4 fuel scoop and this means you have to stop for refueling while the Asp can fit a size 6 and doesn't have to stop. You can also fit a larger size Guardian FSD booster on an Asp and has more modules to work with in total. The Diamondback will work just fine though, the Asp is just a bit more comfortable.
@@brippie I can see how its more comfortable, however, size isn't everything. :D Funny statement though, considering size is honestly everything in ED: Combat, and trade being two prime examples.
I did your build in coriolis.io, only to find that when I put in the 3a auto-field maintenance unit, the 2a power plant tuned red, that should not happen !.
Remember, you need to have the Auto-Field maintenance units deactivated. There's no reason for a ship to be powering everything at the same time. You only turn them on when you need to use them; in which case you'll be deactivating other systems in your ship (such as the ones you'd be repairing). If you don't know, you toggle ship systems on and off on your right hand-screen.
@@kuckoo9036 Note hull can't be repaired *by the AFMU*, but it can be repaired with a Repair Limpet Controller (a 1D should be sufficient for a small ship) and 4t of cargo space to synthesize limpets into. There's also the Hull Seals, a player group like the Fuel Rats dedicated to repairing hulls.
@@limitationsapply I had an amazing "durrr" moment when I found myself asking myself "Well if you can use repair limpets on yourself why can't you use fuel limpets...?" lol
With a fuel scoop it'd be inadvisable, unless you really expect to be in a T-tauri desert or some other special circumstance, which can be avoided by routing properly
Honestly not sure why he's recommending this set up, sounds like he is sacrificing a bunch of stuff to try and get longer jump distance. My diamondback explorer gets about 63ly and I have a hardpoint and some optional items and some storage and srv lol etc. Maybe I'm missing something 🤷🏼♂️

My build without engineering and guardian modules. Has about 39 ly jump range with a full fuel tank, and costs about 18M cr. Core internal: Lightweight alloy, 3a power plant, 4d thrusters, 5a fsd, 3d life support, 3a power distributor, 3d sensors, 4c fuel tank (saves you 16t, I don't think you need a bigger one) Optional internal: 4a fuel scoop, 4a AFMU, 3d shield generator, 3a AFMU (turn that off while flying), 2e cargo rack (doesn't have mass and tanks some of the damage your modules take), 2g vehicle hangar, DSS, supercruise assist (again just to fill out the modules, doesn't have mass)
