This video is about How to Expose Brick and Remove Plaster. Exposing a 3000 sq. ft. area! This is the progress I have made in the east part of the building recently.
In this video I help you understand the basics of using a hammer drill, specifically the Bosch bulldog, in order to remove brick.
There are some pro tips that I add in so be sure to watch to the end to see them all, as well as the work that I have done so far on this building renovation.
Here is a link to the tool that I am using below.

Thank you for the clear explanation, particularly about letting the tool do the job rather than forcing it. Here we go...........

Great tips. I just bought an antique brick building and after a half-day I am happy with my progress. Hadn't seen this and started with the hand chisel, which I found tiresome but I was getting a lot done. Then I had the bright idead to buy a chisel bit for my sawzall. I wanted to avoid the hammer as I have seen chisel marks in many 'buildings redone by professionals'. The sawzall bit it thin enough to not mess the bricks up unless you arent paying attention. I think it has a bit of flex in it that helps deflect itself from the brick into the plaster. Cheers!

I’m trying this out on my basement laundry room since half the brick is already exposed and the other half is covered. Kinda like the look. 👊❤️

@@jessandjessicab I also purchased an abandoned commercial buidling in September 2020. It is a 15,000 square foot, 3-story brick buildiung from the late 1800's with plaster on every interior brick wall except the basement. I have been gutting it almost every day for the past six months and am just getting to removing the plaster. Thank you for the great video. You are correct that the 3" x 12" chiseling bit that you refer to in the video is the way to go because it takes more plaster off quicker and the wider bit does not tear into the brick as much the less wide bits. However, none of the four Bosch Bulldog models will accomodate the large shaft size of the 3" x 12" bit. The Bosch 3" x 12" chiseling bit only works with the heavier, more expensive and less maneuverable Bosch SDS-max series of rotary hammers.

Thank you for the video. My daughter's plasterer wants to put dry wall on our similar walls on a 1920s semi. Would you recommend dry wall instead of traditional plaster?

Not really sure which would be better, I’d reach out to a local GC.

Hi. A couple of questions, please? I don't have brick...I have stones that were hand chosen from a nearby river and brought, 100 years ago, to build this house which my gr8 grandfather built in Italy..... and then covered with plaster. It is not nearly as thick is the one you are doing but perhaps 1/4 of an inch....As much as I would love to just rip all the plaster out of this house to expose the beautiful stones, well, that is out of my league so the pieces, inside, which are a bit crumbly and or humid, I would like to take a tool and just tap to see what falls and what does not...then chisel away and fill the border with a pre prepared cement. You are doing a large piece so the electric chisel makes sense but I want to do little pieces and how those pieces fall is fine. I don't like overly geometric looking shapes, anyway. I like it to look ragged. My questions, would you suggest a hand chisel? I have seen here, that when they are looking to break off old plaster, they use the back of a hammer and tap tap tap to see what is weak and is ready to fall on its own...and this is what I'd like to do. Any ideas? Then, as someone already did this when I had a stove put into the house, I will fill the top along the boundary with the remaining plaster, with a light rim of cement. Just your thoughts, please? I mean, if you ever even see this. Grazie mille!

Not yet. In the future I plan on doing a video on that. We are currently still removing a lot of the brick, we are doing this in a 12,000 sqft building. Check back later to or sub to see when it comes out. Hope this one helped you prep for the removal.

We are almost doing the exact same building. How long did it take to do the one wall?
@jessandjessicab
@jessandjessicab 3 года назад
One wall is about 90 feet long and 12-14 feet tall. One of those was about 10ish hours. I only did about 2-3 hours at a time usually after I got off work. Where you doing your wall at?

Do you think there would be any complications doing this on a wall with windows? It’s a prewar apartment in Manhattan. & would it make the room colder? Does the plaster help with insulation?
@jessandjessicab
@jessandjessicab 3 года назад
I dont think the window would be an issue unless you actually hit the window. I dont think that you would notice much of a difference with insulation if you remove the plaster and the room is sealed and insulated correctly in other places like doors and windows. Although removing the paster does technically decrease the effectiveness, but like I said it shouldn't effect it to much to be noticed.

Hi! I have an interior brick wall that opens up to a fireplace. I am trying to remove what may be cement and not plaster (according to my husband) from around the fireplace opening. Is the Botch hammer something you would recommend if what we need to remove is cement instead of plaster? Let me know if you have any other suggestions and thanks for this content!

Yes I think it would work well with cement too. If it is a large job possibly another tool might work better though. Good luck with your project.
