How to Extend Background in Photoshop using Generative Fill and Outcropping 

Out of all the videos I've watched and couldn't work out why I wasn't getting the GF option, you're the only one that explained I need to be using the PS Beta. Thank you!

Thank you 👍 You know, everything you have shown, I have discovered for myself and use already, and this is not to diminish in any way whatsoever from what you have presented here. But it saddens me that so many creators and communicators like yourself, are so conditioned and YES enslaved to have to conform to formats and standards dictated by other social media platforms, such as those that you cite yourself at 7:03 What is this Big Deal to have to conform to ... Gram, ...Ter, ... Tok , et all? Are you not an individual, an artist and innovator? rather than a slavish follower of fashion? Why should ANYONE have to conform and compromise their vision and composition to a SQUARE 1:1 or vertical 9:16 format for instance? You have a delightful daughter and ready model, I sincerely hope you don't teach her how to model her life according to the model and dictates of this crazy social media moulding world. I have two sons in their 40's and have over 35 years practical experience in the Educational field as an educator and therefor as an influencer. No offense intended nor hopefully taken. When I try extending the image with generative fill I get a line like if I had 2 different images. Do you have any advice for that?

Question, i have two photos, one zoomed in which i love extending it. But what AI gives back is nothing close to what I want. I have a second photo, same location angle but taken zoomed out. Is there a way to tell AI to regenerate off that photo so it creates the extended areas according to the real structure?

Useful tutorial, but you didn’t mention grabbing some meat off your selection when using the marquee tool,although you did this yourself,would it not be worth explaining that by doing this you give the AI some idea of what you want to generate?

This is totally amazing!! I used to be a photographer and did all my own retouching. I have gotten away from photography and have forgotten much of what I used to know. I am now a Fine Artist and am always looking for references....this is such a game changer!!!!!! This opens so many opportunities. I love both the Aspect ratio changes; what a pain that was...wish you could have seen my face when that happened. Love your site!! Thanks for all the information!

I like version 2 of your daughter with the umbrella.

The clouds are not "seamless" in any of the three samples. If this were my image, AI would give me a good start, but I would still have a lot of work to do.

Try testing this on a 10K wide image then you will see that AI is not of use in a professional sense. The filled areas are well blended but totally unsharp.

After selecting crop, and I extend the image, it fills in white vs transparent. What am I missing?

Firefly will reduce your work time by 2/3 or more ! Something like that could have taken you a few hours maybe and this reduced it down to a couple of minutes. That is really major !!

Did you mention that you need to take a small sliver of the existing image with the rectangular marquee tool when making your selection? I noticed that you did on each selection and Adobe recommends that on these extensions.

It is useful but unfortunately it generated at a maximum resolution of 1024x1024. It's fine if you don't post images at full resolution but if you expand the background the line between the real image and the generated background is very visible and can be quite jarring.

Can this beta version be used as a plug in for LR Classic?

I have a question. These tools are amazing: however, I am confused if I lose my copywrite by utilizing these tools.I read all of the Adobe info on the guidelines, but uploading to the Firefly gallery is confusing to me. When you mention that we need wifi so or image can be beamed up to the cloud, does that constitute submitting to the FireFly gallery? I do understand that any image utilizing these tools can NOT be used for business/ commercially.

Hi Kristi, I just watch your 4 videos and have to say I love how yo teach. You speak clearly and without rush so every word can be understood. I'm a customer of yours and also love the actions I purchased. Now I think I have this GF subject down thanks to you. Im writing with a question off-subject but related. I have a 8-yrs old granddaughter who I'd love to shoot as you did with the levitation image and illuminated umbrella. I was hoping to find a tutorial on that shot on RU-vid or your website, but if there is one in either of these sites, I did not find it. I've done levitation before, but I was particularly interested to see if you had a description of how you created the bright light in the interior of the umbrella

This is a fantastic feature. I've just used it for a more basic photo studio background extension, and it worked beautifully. Thank you for your video which helped to figure out how this feature actually works in Photoshop (which I haven't been using for many years once I switched to Sketch/Figma for UI design)

It's good but not that good. I've noticed it can't match the resolution of the original image, especially if you have something super detailed you're trying to expand on, such as material or a textured wall. It's great for imagery like the one in the video as it's creating blurred imagery.

Good, but you seem to like the straight lines the GF left .personally i would have shown techniques to smooth out those lines to have a through video explanation but to each her own

Can images modified by this AI process be used in a book cover for resale? I mean, is the image licensed for this sort of use as long as the original image was licensed?

On the image of your daughter, my favorite was #2, just felt the most realistic. I just found this video as I needed to increase some space on an image of running wolves which needed more space to the left. In order to keep the aspect ration, and the ability to crop to other sizes, I wanted to increase the sides and the bottom. The background is snow on all 3 sides, as well as foliage on the sides. I simply left my ratio at the original, dragged the crop outwards on the sides and the bottom, clicked Generate and was presented with 3 excellent options. Perhaps the release version does not require using the marquee, it worked without for me. Thank you for the excellent video, pacing was great, and your examples were spot on. Simply WOW! I am now your newest subscriber.

This is so handy! I don't have to manually make a filling for 3mm bleed around printwork anymore, the AI does it for me, this saves me so much time!

It’s brilliant, it has rescued wildlife photos where the bird was faster than my tracking, or the bird changed track leaving no “space” to fly into, adding a Generative space works extremely well with a little extra editing 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Thank you so much for your video! I was going to do your process, but when I used the crop tool to expand the canvas, the AI did an automated generated expansion! Great video! What are the legal rights for changing someone else’s photos that you have bought? I’m running into this question all the time now when using this new tool and you are able to instantly change an original photo with little effort and amazing results. For example if a wedding couple change from portrait to landscape mode by themselves.

You're the 5th video I've watched, and the only one clear enough that it worked. I did discover that generative fill doesn't work with grayscale...I do a lot of historical work, so that was a necessary lesson. It's an amazing tool!
