How to Fail and Not Fail at Dual DC and DCC Train Control

How I set up part of my 2x4 foot N scale layout for dual DC and DCC train control. Eventually, I will have the same setup for the other loops of track. While the wiring is simple, I still managed to botch it all up and ruined about $180 worth of electronics circuitry. Thankfully, it wasn’t much worse.

Oh dear. I feel your pain. 😥 I use a Gaugemaster panel mount controller too. I use a simpler DPDT switch for changing from DC to DCC. I use DC connectors on the wires. They look like mono jack plugs. They advantage is that you can use heat shrink tubing on the connections. I think it also helps you stop getting the +/- wires mixed up. It must be a good system because I actually wired them up the right way, which is not something I usually get right. (My turnouts tend to throw the wrong way). The other thing I did was to use a Dymo label maker to make DC and DCC labels to assist in identifying which way I had the switch. I was always forgetting.

You’re much better at electrical than I am. Since I am color blind, I would depend on people like you. This really looks nice. As I watch you build this I want to make one too.

You handled that a lot better than I would have! Loved your high-tech graphics. I thought my monitor was on fire for a moment when you added the smoke.

Steve, after watching this a couple of times I’ve come to the conclusion that wiring and electrical work is not your strong suit, but hey, we can’t all be good at everything! Keep up the great work!👍

I agree-a center-off toggle adds a level of safety-also remove or isolate the DC locos from the track before switching to DCC and vice-versa..

Steve, Another excellent video. Hey, stuff happens! to everybody, me included. I have made my share of costly mistakes, no matter how careful at checking and double checking my wiring. I use a diode in series with one of the power wiring leads. Doesn't matter which power lead positive or negative you put it in. It just changes which way you install the diode. This will only allow the correct polarity to operate and protect against reverse polarity. The diode will typically drop about .6 volts across it which is negligible.

Hi Steve. Just stumbled upon you video, sorry for your difficulties! I did notice you used a regular DPDT switch, and (hopefully) this is of the "non-shorting" variety - a safe bet is to use a center off type to avoid yet ANOTHER batch of fried equipment!😉 Just thought I'd mention it. Thanks for being forthcoming with your mistakes - it may well help someone else avoid them. Kudos to you!

Excellent video. However with block wiring and multiple power sources and cab controllers, I can run three trains on my layout. If I lay my track smartly I wouldn’t have to even have the blocks set.

Ah you mega rich RU-vid celebrities!!! Wasting all those endless ad dollars!! ;-)) JK, sorry for your unfortunate experiences. It is really on the manufacturer to include a few extra inexpensive components to protect against accidental mis-connection. Glad you were able to get there in the end.

Are you saying that all You Tubers do not execute every project flawlessly like they make it seem in their videos? /sarcasm Thanks for sharing your trials and tribulations. I believe it is important to show the mistakes as troubleshooting and problem solving is an important element in our hobby.

Problem solving for sure! Yeah, it is easy to think you know what you are doing sometimes and then reality slaps you in the face a few times to keep you in line. Lol

Interested to know youve done dual dc and dcc control, is that so you can run older dc trains or, not sure i understand why have both. Any help appreciated.

I have a bunch of locomotives, some are DC and some DCC. I don’t want to convert all of them to DCC. Plus, sometimes I just want a model of a locomotive but don’t want to spend money on the DCC version, and so just buy the DC version. With this setup I can run both easily without any worries. I have a video out tomorrow on finishing up the remainder of the wiring.

@@StevesTrains Thanks for taking your time, im just thinking of getting into the hobby and soaking up all the info i can before i make the plunge. Would love your opinion on DCS52 Zephyr Express: All-in-one Command Station/Booster/Throttle if you get time. And i assume i can start with DC and wire up DCC later? any advice appreicated.

Terminal strips instead of plugs...
@StevesTrains

Yeah, that I will definitely use a terminal strip for all the DCC wiring connections at least (once I move onto the remaining wiring work)
